Abstract [en]
Over the past century, globalization has played an important role in shaping and transforming our world, leading to English becoming the dominant language used in various areas, including education. This language change has affected the educational landscape in various ways and has had significant consequences for students, teachers, and education. A clear consequence of this phenomenon is the spread of international schools and programs where teaching takes place wholly or partly in English. The purpose of this essay was to examine the challenges faced by primary school teachers who teach in English-speaking contexts (ESU) and explore the various pedagogical approaches used to address these challenges. More specifically, it addressed the following questions: the differences between English teaching and subject teaching in terms of language choice, adaptation of teaching and assessment to students' learning, use of aids to support students’ learning, integration of students' interculturality in teaching, and the impact of teachers’ language ideology on teaching methods and students’ language identities. This study was conducted through interviews to examine how four teachers handle multilingualism in English Medium of Instruction contexts (ESU) in Sweden. The results of the study show that there are different opinions among the teachers. Some emphasized the importance of using English as the language of instruction, while others emphasized the importance of also incorporating Swedish in the learning process. The challenges the teachers in the study experienced were, among other things, uneven language levels among the students and the need to create a balance between the two languages, especially in the lower grades. In order to enhance students' comprehension and meet their individual needs, the teachers mainly used scaffolding and multimodal aids as methods in their teaching. In conclusion, the study provides insights into challenges and opportunities for English language instruction, emphasizing the importance of linguistic collaboration and translanguaging in education.
