This essay demonstrates the teaching values contained in Kendrick Lamar’s lyrics, the value of Paulo Freire’s pedagogy of the oppressed, and further, the value of teaching the former through the latter. Freirian theory makes the case that a pedagogy for the liberation of the oppressed requires that oppressed people themselves investigate their situation to find what limits they need to overcome. This essay argues that Lamar can be placed as a Freirian investigator of where he grew up, that his songs are the findings of his investigation, and that analysis of his songs in a Freirian framework targets the goals of the English subject outlined in the background section, promotes critical thinking, and furthers the democratic mission of Swedish schools. This is of increasing importance due to recent and current trends of xenophobia and arguably anti-democracy in the political climate of Sweden, and elsewhere.
