This degree project essay aims to provide insights into Swedish upper secondary teachers’ perceptions of the effectiveness and practical implementation of students’ motivation, own beliefs, and confidence in English by using authentic material (AM). Semi-structured interviews were conducted with upper secondary school teachers who teach English 5, 6, and 7. The data was analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Findings show that all the teachers interviewed believed that AM is the essential material for motivating students. Most teachers believed that technology and digital sources like podcasts, TED talks, and YouTube aid in students' comprehension of the English language. The teachers prefer working with AM and see the positive possibilities of it when it comes to students’ motivation and interest in the subject. They can see how inauthentic material (IAM) can help students in early courses in English. Furthermore, this degree essay provides insights into some teachers’ usage of AM and could therefore give indications of teachers’ perceptions. In the conclusion, this essay will connect the findings of the degree project to the significance of using AM in upper secondary teaching to enhance students' motivation. It is hoped that the investigation of teacher attitudes and practices will provide valuable insights that can inform and enhance the implementation of AM in second-language English education.
