Abstract [en]

In today's fast-paced and dynamic business environment, change is a constant reality for organizations worldwide. Whether it involves technological advancements, market shifts, or internal restructurings, companies face ongoing challenges to adapt and lead their employees through these changes. In this context, communication is a crucial factor for success, and corporate leaders play a key role in managing this communication challenge. The purpose of this study is to understand the extent to which corporate leaders use rhetoric when communicating in periods of change. By focusing on the role of rhetoric in leadership communication, we aim to contribute to a deeper understanding of how leaders can effectively use communication to navigate through change. The material was collected through semi-structured interviews with four corporate leaders from four different organizations. The study's findings show that rhetoric plays a crucial role in effectively communicating during changes and managing employees' feelings of worry and uncertainty. The interview findings indicate how rhetoric can be successfully used in change communication, suggesting that practical knowledge of the importance of rhetoric exists among corporate leaders. However, research underpinning the study suggests that the theoretical application of rhetoric in leadership research is lacking.
