Alcohol-related intimate partner violence in young people's relationships (English)
Abstract [sv]

Totalt deltog 231 respondenter i åldrarna 18-20 (135 kvinnor respektive 96 män).

Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to investigate young people in Sweden's attitudes towards intimate partner violence in heterosexual relationships based on gender and the influence of alcohol. The study examined whether the gender of the victim/perpetrator, the gender of the respondents and the perpetrator being under the influence of alcohol affected attitudes regarding the severity of intimate partner violence. In order to examine the purpose, digital vignette surveys based on the Opinion of Domestic Violence Scale were distributed among third year students in Swedish high schools. In total 231 students participated, aged 18-20 (135 women and 96 men). The analyses were conducted through three 2x2 ANOVAs. The results showed that both male and female respondents viewed intimate partner violence with a male perpetrator and a female victim as more severe than the opposite. Furthermore female respondents viewed intimate partner violence as more severe than male respondents did, regardless of the gender of the victim/perpetrator. The perpetrator being under the influence of alcohol did not affect the attitudes regarding the severity of intimate partner violence for neither men nor women. The results were discussed on the basis of previous research and Social Learning Theory. The conclusions were that men's violence against women was considered more severe, and that women considered intimate partner violence as more severe than men did. The study contributes with implications for further research, crime prevention and practice towards intimate partner violence.
