Music during times of war has a profound and multifaceted role. It affects the emotional, psychological, and social realm of both combatants and civilians. Impacted by the social phenomenon of war, music stays as one of the most influential tools for propaganda and identity formation in the times of turmoil. The research presented here is a comparative case study which aims to explore the influence of the Russian-Ukrainian war on music. By analysing music created after the beginning of the war, my research studies whether war as a social and cultural phenomenon affects the creation and production of music in both societies and if so, to what extent. The thesis tries to establish the characteristics of war propaganda music and their prevalence in Russian and Ukrainian music of the present day. In this I also investigate the effect of propaganda music on identity formation and the shift in Russian and Ukrainian identities after the commencement of war.
