This study examines the relationship between the proportion of immigrants in municipalities and voter turnout in Swedish municipalities. The study was based on studying the proportion of immigrants in all municipalities in Sweden and how high or low voter turnout was in all municipalities during the 2018 and 2022 election year. The study was based on the question “How does immigrant density affect voter turnout in Swedish municipal elections?” The study used a regression analysis to understand the relationship between voter turnout and the proportion of immigrants. The regression analysis resulted in two tables where a regression line was drawn, from which four municipalities were chosen to study. The four chosen municipalities have therefore been analyzed in relation to the theoretical starting points used in the study. The theoretical starting points used in the study are theories about the effect education, income and country of origin have on voter turnout. In the study, the results from the regression analysis have been analyzed in relation to these theories. The study has resulted in the finding that a high proportion of immigrants has a negative impact on voter turnout in the municipalities. Thus, a high immigrant share means lower voter turnout in municipal elections.
