DEMOCRACY IN RHETORIC AND PRACTICE : A quantitative study of students' experience of democracy in schools (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The study aims to examine 9th graders experience of democracy in schools. In the study there is a distinction between a functionalist-, deliberative- and participative theory of democracy. A number of different documents, regulating the democracy work in primary schools, is analyzed from the different democratic perspectives. A survey of 98 students in grade nine at four schools in Örebro Kommun, was conducted to examine students' experiences. Survey responses were compared with the curriculums, democratic theories and previous research on democracy in schools, to see first how the school meets requirements of the curriculums, and secondly were the emphasis of the work of democracy is done. Results show that the emphasis is within the functionalist theory of democracy, but also that students, more than the results of previous research, experience that the deliberative democracy is functioning. The result also shows that students wants to, but do not feel themselves able to, influence their situation in school.
