Abstract [sv]

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate how detained fathers experience and handle their parenting while in penitentiary and how they describe the Penal System's role in this. This is a qualitative study and we have interviewed four fathers who were earlier detained. In our study we also had contact with a "Children Commissioner" who was working in an institution, in order to thus obtain material about how the Penal System is working to make the relationship and contact between detained parents and their children possible. The results showed that the detained fathers had experienced numerous difficulties around both the relationship and the contact with their children. The difficulties were based in both their own internal processes and institution constraints. The results showed a critical attitude towards the Penal System's work in the case of the relationship and contact with their children during their sentence. The causes of this critical attitude was, according to the results, the security-thinking and the attitudes of the prison staff individuals, although these results was very different depending on what personel was involved. This makes it important for the Penal System to continue its work related to the detained parents' relationship and contact with their children during their time in prison and also work on the prison staff's role in this.
