Psychological risk factors for incidence of insomnia : The first step towards screening and prevention (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to use existing data in order to identify possible psychological risk factors for the incidence of insomnia. The participants from this sample who had not developed insomnia at the first measuring point were selected. The participants were measured at the second measuring point 18 months later on whether they had developed or not developed insomnia. The two groups were then compared with each other on the possible risk factors: arousal, safety behaviors, worry, dysfunctional beliefs, monitoring, anxiety and depression. The results revealed that all factors were significant. Arousal and worry were shown to have the strongest effects related to the prevalence of insomnia. The proposed guidelines for preventive work were based on the results. This represents a first step towards the development of a screening questionnaire for insomnia.
