Abstract [sv]

ungdomen tycks ha påverkat placeringens utfall i viss grad.

Abstract [en]

ABSTRACT

This qualitative study was assigned by Swedish municipal social services which focused on

adolescents who initiated disruption in foster placement. The purpose of this study was to explore

young people's thoughts and experiences with having lived in a foster family and initiating a

disruption in the placement. The outline in this study has been aimed at promoting young people's

experiences of life in the foster home, the relationship to social services, the disruption and its

effects, as well as the placement effects on the youth and their situations. In gathering this

information, unstructured interviews were conducted with four adolescents who chose to

discontinue one or more foster home placements prematurely. The interviews were recorded and

transcribed leaving the person anonymous. The material from each interview was presented and

analyzed based on two theories: developing ecological theory and Erikson's theory of human

development.

The results of this study showed the importance of stable relationships during the placement

period for young people to both thrive and stay with the foster family. This was included for both

current relationships as well as in the new ones. The individual socialworkers relationship with, and

responsiveness to the youth had significant impact for the placements outcome. Another factor in

the study showed that the reason adolescents left their placement early was due to their

geographical location. Respondents expressed that their ideal outcome was to live in their

hometown during the placement.
