Abstract [en]

Violence in public places is a type of crime that in a clear way often clusters in space and time, especially during weekends and nights and in city centres in close relation to night-time establishments serving alcohol. This study examines the outcome of a place-based crime prevention effort implemented in the city centre of a medium-sized Swedish city during weekend evenings and nights, aiming to reduce the number of reported physical assaults. The intervention consisted of regular patrolling by private security guards in a specific area in encompassing several known hot spots of physical assault. A quasi-experimental design was applied to investigate if the crime rates concerning physical assaults decreased as a result of the intervention and whether any displacement or diffusion effects could be detected. The results show that small, non-significant decreases appeared in the number of reported assaults, and subsequently, no significant displacement effects or diffusion of benefits were detected. These results are discussed in relation to i) the planning and implementation of the intervention, ii) the type of crime targeted and  iii) the methodological implications of initially low crime rates in a hot spot.
