Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate the transsexuals' experiences of being just a transsexual in today's society and how this is influenced by prevailing norms concerning different gender identities. Purpose was furthermore to study how they perceive themselves to be treated by professional helpers, and what professionals should consider in meetings with transsexuals. The study is based on seven interviews with transsexual persons who are in various stages of their transformation process. All interviewees are living life as their psychological / mental / perceived gender. To get an appropriate analysis of the results, we have adopted a social constructivist theory and the theory of "gender performance" and heteronormativity. In order to show how they experience the hospitality of the professional, we have chosen to use the various theories of attitude in our interpretive framework. The study shows that transsexuals live in a very complex reality with heterosexual norm as a central point of their being and that this also places special demands on a professional helper. The demands detected in the study are a non-invasive or discriminatory attitude and that this is something that is felt should govern the professional's attitude in meeting with transsexuals.
