The complexity of the treatment relationship : A qualitative study concerning the treatment relationship within compulsory treatment (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

An uncontrolled use of illegal and legal substances is today seen as a big social problem. Individuals that, due to addiction, are in risk of harming themselves or someone else can be prepared treatment according to the Swedish welfare system Care of Alcoholics and Drug Abuser Act (LVM, 1988:870). Within this treatment area the treatment relationship is seen as a central factor, which is the relationship that can develop between a client and staff. This relationship should involve confidence, support and reciprocity. The purpose of this study is to examine the meaning of the treatment relationship in the context of compulsory treatment from a client- and staff perspective. Further the aim of the study is to highlight how the treatment relationship takes shape within that context. The chapter regarding previous research concerns the establishment of the treatment relationship within compulsory treatment, from a client- and staff perspective and the affect the treatment relationship has on the treatment outcome. A qualitative approach, and semi structured interviews has been used to answer the research questions and the purpose of the study. In total thirteen respondents have been interviewed, these respondents were comprised of seven staff and six clients. The result show that one of the essential parts of the treatment is the treatment relationship that occurs at the establishment and is based on the abovementioned keywords.  There is also an interaction between the clients and the staff that makes the development of a treatment relationship possible. The lack of activities and some clients discontent can however make the establishment of a treatment relationship more difficult.
