Abstract [sv]

I studien analyserades 71 enkäter.

Abstract [en]

Abstract Aim: The aim of this study was to illustrate family members ́ experiences of care at an

oncology department in cases of terminal illness.

Method: The study’s data collection is based on previously collected material between the years 2009-2012. A descriptive design with a quantitative approach and parts of qualitative data was chosen. Questionnaires were sent out from an oncology department to family members two months after the patient's death. The questionnaires contained eight questions with set responses and two open questions. In the questions with set responses were statistical analysis used. The two open-ended questions were analyzed with a qualitative content analysis with an inductive approach. 71 questionnaires were analyzed.

Results: The study showed that the families were in general satisfied with the palliative care that was given. The family members felt that they were involved. More than half of the families were completely satisfied with the information provided at the ward. Some family members believed that the information was deficient and that they had to ask about the patient's condition, treatment and planning. The family members felt that the symptom relief was acceptable. The symptoms included pain relief, anxiety, and other symptoms. All the family members who had had a follow up dialog felt it was rewarding. In some cases it was planned that the patient would be cared for in other palliative hospice or at home. The family members feel safe with the care that was given in the department. The staff experienced as stressed and they desired more time of nursing care. Despite this the family members experienced that the staff were responsive, competent, friendly and treated them in a friendly manner.

Conclusion: This study identifies the experiences of the palliative care at an oncology department. Health professionals are becoming more aware of how the health care is from the families' point of view.
