Abstract [en]

During the autumn of 2013, the Swedish daily newspaper Dagens Nyheter revealed that the police in the southern parts of Sweden had mapped and registered citizens with roma ethnicity. Since the newspaper claimed this was illegal, a great debate arose, especially among the roma groups in Sweden. Through a critical discourse analysis, the purpose of this paper is to examine how Dagens Nyheter reported about the registration. Discourse theory and theories concerning ethnicity are applied to this study. The results show that the newspaper portraits a relatively stereotypical image of the roma citizens and that the roma are accepted into society first when they adapt Swedish norms and attributes. Also, the analysis shows that the police, through the newspaper, defends the registration in terms of a way of fighting crime.
