Abstract [en]

This study analyses the reporting of Sweden’s two biggest newspapers, Aftonbladet and Dagens Nyheter, about the accuring “riots” in Stockholm surburgathory. The riots in Husby became an international media happening when it spread to several suburbs nationwide. With the method critical discourse analysis twenty articles were analyzed. These where published after the first car fire and a week forward, between the 21th of May 2013 and the 28th of-May 2013.  The analys was based on how the reporting constructed positive “us” and negative “other” and how the suburb Husby was constructed in an ethnic perspective. The purpose is to see if, and how Swedish newspapers construct ethnic inequalities in the Swedish society. The theoretical premises for the study are the critical discourse analysis and theories about etnicity,”us and them” and center-periphery. The conclusion is that Sweden´s two biggest newspaper reported mostly from the police perspective and created the people who were part of the riots as negative “the others”.
