Vad äldre människor tillskriver mening och värde I livet (Swedish)
Abstract [en]

The terms ”meaning” and ”value” represent a pillaring aspect of existential psychology. It is here theorized that every conscious being is not only capable of identifying and experiencing meaning and value in their existence and surroundings, they are also in need of it. The present study investigates what people In the lattermost stage of life, when looking back at the course of their lifetime and experiences therein, declare to have granted them a sense of meaning and value. An existentialist theoretical framework is applied throughout the study. Adopting the qualitative method of interpretative phenomenological analysis to guide data collection and analysis, semi-structured interviews were held with five elderly participants, prompting a retrospective view of what they attribute meaning and value to in their lived experience. Presented in the report are interview excerpts, identified common themes, as well as three subjectively inferred and interpreted major themes sprung from attained data: experiences of contrast, sense of unity, and expressions of creativity. Results are claimed to be of specific interest to practitioners and partakers of existential psychotherapy, and of general interest to any individual contemplating the existential issues addressed. Discussion is held on the subjective nature of the study, and challenges therein.
