Abstract [en]

This study aims to understand how assumptions about human nature underlie two psychosocial drug treatment methods and how these assumptions influence professionals working with treatment in two different prison wings. Furthermore the organizational culture on the wings is explored in relation to the different views of human nature. The data consist of instruction manuals describing the treatment programs, and interviews with prison officers and treatment staff. Results show that twelve-step treatment is based on a collectivistic understanding on humans as beings depending on others while the cognitive-behavioral program Dare to choose is based upon assumptions about humans as individuals able to affect their own future. Also, the choice of program could have implications on the view of human nature for professionals and could also affect organizational culture on prison wings. It is suggested that treatment programs ought to be understood as complex and depending upon cultural assumptions about human and society. This has consequences on a common view that treatment ought to be explored exclusively on effects. Rather, researchers could share the view that effect is only one off many other important aspects of psychosocial drug treatment.
