Abstract [en]

This paper addresses some of the challenges of teaching literary history in undergraduate courses and sketches the central dilemma of coverage versus depth. It gives a background to how and why traditional historical survey courses became standard for teaching literature in England, from the early 19th century. With reference to literary history as a research field, we go on to discuss pedagogical goals in terms of inspiring historical inquiry and understanding. We discuss the critical reading skills required for such understanding and compare them to skills involved in cultural understanding. We find that two methods compete for attention: teaching from the past (with the aim to make students recognize the strangeness of past periods), and teaching from the present (with the aim to make students see the relevance of older literary works). In order to open the discussion, but also to focus it on doable pedagogical practices, we present a few cases of historicized literary works.
