ADHD: En kvalitativ studie om vuxna med ADHD2011Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

2017Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the essay is to examine whether, and if so how, young adults' experiences of separation and contested custody between parents during childhood influenced their attitudes to coexistence issues. Further, the intention is to seek answers to questions regarding: the best interests of the child, attitudes towards relationships, separation and marriage, as well as the current relationship to the parents. The interpretative framework adopted to interpret and understand the empirical material is based on the initial provisions under chapter 6, some risks with the social workers' approach, the children's sense of responsibility, loyalty and concealment, the child’s survival strategies as well as cognitive dissonance theory.  These are considered effective to highlight young adults' experiences in childhood and their attitudes to coexistence issues. A qualitative method was applied to obtain the empirical material. Five female respondents were interviewed using a semi-structured interview guide. The essay’s findings indicate that the principle of the child’s best interests is not always applicable for the young adults during childhood. Their attitude towards relationships, separation and marriage is characterized by an open attitude to different family constellations with good qualities, positive and negative consequences of their parents' separation and a desire to get married in the future. The relationship today remains good with one parent, while the relationship with the other parent differs.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to identify which treatment models that are available for men who use violence against women in intimate relationships and the effects of the most commonly used treatment interventions. The further aim is to examine the theoretical assumptions and processing content of treatment models. The present study was conducted as a literature review where knowledge about treatment models for violent men in intimate relationships are compiled. Our results demonstrate that the treatment models that are most commonly used are Emerge, The Duluth Model, Change and ATV (Alternatives to Violence). Evaluations show that most treatment models exhibit small but significant effects and recurrence of violent crime decreases in the short term. Research highlights, however problems about the difficulties associated with evaluating treatment programs.

    Abstract

The aim with this study is to investigate young adult´s experiences and need of social work in school, and a qualitative method was used to take part of their experiences. Groupquestionnaires with open questions was formed and three year one classes in uppersecondary school participated. In the process of making the questions a testquestionnaire was tested with one of the three classes as particpants. Information has also been collected throug an interview over the phone with the school´s welfare officer, and the school´s policy dokuments have been read. Social work in schools is mentioned in the study as preventive measures with youths when it comes to bullying, alcohol, drugs, sex and coexistance and tobacco. The concept youths include individuals born in 1989 and the year they was born was chosen in the study instead of a specific age to include youths who are not yet sixteen and to exclude the ones who are born earlier. The main questions are: What kind of experiences do yoths have of social work in school? What kind of need do youths have of social work in school? The result show the respondents experiences and needs of social work in school throug quotation and the answers. The result is also illustrated throug two diagrams which show the questionnaires frequence of answer. There is a need of social work in the uppersecondary school, and the need of it is not more then what the school today can offer. The respondents had the oppotunity to freely be able to express their opinion of social work in school, but the result shows that the youths who participated do not have the interest to give their opinion in the subject. This emerge throug answers with few words and a high frequence of “don´t know”-answers in many of the questions in the questionnaire. The analysis and discussion in this study opens up for new questions that can be used as further research. Key words: social work in school, youths

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Barnaga - unga vuxnas attityder2012Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine young adults', 18-19 years old, attitudes towards corporal punishment and with the help of social constructionism, grid-group theory and relevant concepts analyze the results and compare it with previous research. The research questions introduce various factors such as gender, origin and personal experiences of corporal punishment that may affect the attitudes. In order to fulfill the purpose and answer the research questions, a quantitative research method has been selected. There was 118 participants in the survey. The study was conducted by means of surveys in high schools in Örebro. Social constructionism made us realize how the community, perceptions and expectations might influence attitudes. Grid-group theory gave us an insight into how different family structures may explain why attitudes toward corporal punishment of children differ between individuals. One of the conclusions of this study is that the long-term trend of decreasing positive attitudes toward corporal punishment seems to continue. Results show that all of 41, 2% of young adults in our study, with parents born outside the Nordic countries, have been subjected to corporal punishment. Personal experiences and parents' origin has been shown to have effects on attitudes towards corporal punishment. Different family structures and attitudes towards child rearing may be important to understand and take into consideration in social work. The study shows that corporal punishment still exists, which makes the topic worth of attention and we recommend it to be studied further.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine foster parents experiences of the support they have received from a municipality´s social service. Essential questions in the study was how the foster parents experienced the availability of support and the emotional support they  have  received from the social service as well as  how the support was experienced in contact with the placed child´s network. In this study, ten foster parents from five foster homes in a smaller town in the middle of Sweden were interviewed about their experiences of the support they have received from the social services. The study has a qualitative starting point with ecological systems theory and system theory. Our results demonstrate that the foster parents were satisfied with the support they have received from the social services in forms of phone calls and visits, and for one of the families also through e-mail. However, there were some dissatisfaction regarding not getting enough support from the social service in the beginning of the placement, which was considered to be a more uncertain and challenging time, and that social workers often were inaccessible and that they could be difficult to get hold on by phone. Other issues identified were difficulties in distinguishing which responsibilities lied on the family and which responsibilities lied on the social welfare. There were uncertainties about who really was responsible for parts of the family home mission, especially regarding maintaining of contact with the child's network that in some cases were seen as strained. Despite some difficulties, the overall support was perceived as good by all of the foster parents.

Veckans höjdpunkt - Tryggve: - en stödgruppsverksamhet för barn till missbrukande föräldrar2006Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Purpose: This article aims to analyze and discuss the role of moral development in treatment of behavior problems and, further, to describe differences and similarities between two different methods – Milieu Therapy (MT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) – in terms of addressing criminogenic needs and promoting moral development.

Design: By performing a literature review, the study shows that even though there are both pros and cons using MT and CBT in institutional care, relationships strong enough to restructure a young person’s moral reasoning require time, and involves not only the young person’s parents and social network members, but also a genuine therapeutic alliance with clinical staff at the institution.

Findings:These are central factors articulated in both CBT and MT, but are more explicitly expressed in MT. The results of this article highlight some important practical implications: In order to redevelop moral self and societal values, an overly narrow focus on criminogenic needs might exclude other components or processes of treatment and behavioral change. Together with a treatment program that view close staffresident interactions as of secondary importance, this could impair the possibility to obtain positive and long-lasting treatment results.

Implications: In practice, moral development itself should be considered as an overall treatment goal, integrated into the daily life at the institution, twenty-four hours a day. Finally, the possibility to work with moral development in institutional settings is discussed.

Juveniles in institutional treatment lack the skills to cope with societal expectations, rules, and moral values. If not prevented by staff, bonds are established with other deviant youth and the placement serves as a perfect "school of crime." This article aims to explore staff strategies to prevent negative peer cultures, as well as their theoretical foundations and relation to staff academic level and professional experience. Data were collected at eight Swedish institutions, using the Correctional Program Assessment Inventory 2000, questionnaires, observations, and interviews with clinical staff. Results show that most facilities lack negative-peer-culture strategies, but this is not related to academic level or experience. The importance, in terms of influencing the residents, of theoretical knowledge concerning psychological group-processes, peer culture, and moral development, as these relate to staff-supervised or unsupervised time, is discussed.

    Abstract [en]

To promote behavioral change processes in young people in institutional care, it is important that staff groups have common therapeutic goals, a unified view on how to achieve change, and similar attitudes towards the use of theory and methods. This article examines the level of Staff Group Unanimity at 8 treatment wards, by using the Correctional Program Assessment Inventory 2000 (CPAI), a questionnaire, additional interviews with key staff, and observations. Results show that most staff members have different views of the theory and methods used, low common therapeutic goals, and low agreement on how treatment should be performed, accompanied by low to modest confidence in management overall, and management’s ability to promote staff unity. The complexity of promoting positive interactions in the staff group without also creating distance to the residents is discussed.

    Abstract [en]

One prerequisite for effective institutional care is that staff agree on how to deliver treatment and have a unified view of how to achieve change—in other words, to have staff group unanimity (SGU). This study used the Correctional Program Assessment Inventory (CPAI) 2000, interviews with key staff, and observations of daily activities to examine the levels of SGU on eight treatment wards in Sweden. Results show that staff members had differing views of the theory and methods, low common therapeutic goals, low to modest confidence in management, and low agreement about how treatment should be delivered. At institutions displaying low and medium levels of SGU, observations revealed significantly less interactions between staff and residents, and the residents spend a lot less time in staff supervised activities than at institutions with a high level of SGU. This article also considers the complexity of promoting positive interactions among the staff while maintaining close relationships between the staff and residents.

    Abstract [en]

    Purpose

Institutional staff encounter juveniles with complex problems (externalizing and internalizing)which calls for adequate formal education/training and professional experience to deliver quality treatment, contributing to an effective organization and increasing public value. The purpose of this paper is to investigate staff’s formal education, professional experience and the institutions’ organizational strategies providing knowledge and clinical training to staff.

    Design/methodology/approach

The study includes staff questionnaires from eight wards (n¼102). In addition, 39 in-depth interviews were conducted with management and staff members.

    Findings

Results show that institutions lack clearly defined target groups, 70 percent of staff members lack college education, 30 percent has never been offered education within the organization, and the vast majority of staff does not feel competent in performing their daily work.

    Practical implications

The results from this study shed light on an overlooked area in institutions, detention centers and prison settings, and are important to policy makers and governmental organizations responsible for coercive care of juveniles.

    Originality/value

Unlike previous studies, treatment and detention organizations are emphasized as similar to manufacturing industry and profit organizations, and the results are discussed with departure in organizational theory.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine how family law secretaries experience the situations of the children in accordance with their assignments in the custody, residence and contact cases. These questions were asked: What instruments/tools are used to determine the children’s situation in the custody, residence and contact cases during the parental separation? How do family law secretaries define their role in custody, residence and contact cases at the parents’ separation? This study was conducted by using a qualitative research method which included eight semi-structured interviews with family law secretaries. As a basis for our study we have used the systems theory and street-level bureaucracy. This is because the family law secretaries have authority and in the case investigations they observe how the family members interact with each other. The results were interpreted by the phenomenological approach, which showed that there were significant differences in how family law secretaries interpreted what was included in their assignment. The family law secretaries’ foremost instrument during case handling was shown to be conversation. Another important result was that all family law secretaries felt that the childrens health was affected by their parents’ separation and that the childrens relationship to their parents was also affected, both negatively and positively in the short and long term.

    Abstract [en]

Unaccompanied children that arrives in Sweden are usually placed in homes for care and residence, called HVB. It is the municipality's responsibility to provide adequate care and protection for the children. The aim of the study is to examine how a workgroup on a HVB home for unaccompanied children is working to meet the needs of the children, and how the workgroup improves the children’s integration process. The study also aims to examine the emotional labour of the workgroup, which illustrates how they can manage their own emotional behavior when working with the unaccompanied children.

The study is based on a qualitative approach with detailed descriptions of five semi-structured interviews with the workgroup and assistant managers. The study relieved that the workgroup of the HVB home are able to cater to the individual needs of the unaccompanied children based on difficulties and their past experience. The result shows that the professional approach of the workgroup differs when working with the unaccompanied children’s needs and integration process. The results also relieved that the overall goal of the studied HVB home – to make the unaccompanied children completely independent and responsible young adults, is not completely fulfilled. In order to further improve the children's development in their new environment, previous studies have found that it is important to not only understand the importance of a professional approach but also to collaborate with others. This in order to contribute to the children’s development in the new society.

    Abstract [en]

This study aims to examine how parents are effected by having a child addicted to drugs, what support have the parents received from instances they been in contact with regarding the child's addiction and what constitutes the best kind of support according to the parents. Based on the aim of the study a qualitative research approach was chosen and collection of the empirical data was made through semi-structured interviews. Previous research on the area has shown an obvious limitation. Existing research confirm however that support for dependants is a neglected area. The result of the study show that the everyday life for the parents has been dramatically affected as the drug addiction of the children has lead to negative consequences in terms of practical, economical, emotional and social areas. The result also shows a lack of support, mainly from the social services. According to the parents the best support can be obtained by early interventions, cooperation between the instances in current contact for the parents in connection with the child's drug abuse and the opportunity to meet parents with similar experiences as themselves.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate how supervisors from a Fountain House experience

their supervisor role and to examine whether and how the role has an impact on the balance of

power in the relationship between supervisors and members. In order to pursue the objectives of

the study the following three questions are investigated:

    1. How do supervisors experience their work on the basis of their supervisor role at the

    Fountain House?

    2. How can the supervisors’ perceptions of the supervisor role be understood through

    Goffman's role theory?

    3. In what way does the supervisor role influence the power relationship between

supervisors and the members of the Fountain House and how can this be understood on

the basis of Foucault's theory of power?

The study is based on six qualitative semi-structured interviews with supervisors from a Fountain

House in a medium sized city in Sweden. The interviews have then been transcribed, thematized

and finally analysed using theoretical concepts from Goffman’s role theory and Foucault's theory

of power. The results of the study shows that the supervisor role is limiting but also flexible,

since the supervisors can design the role within the context of the operational guidelines.

Simultaneously the supervisor's role comes with paradoxical expectations on the supervisors

since they are expected to share the responsibility and work side by side with the members, while

having the ultimate responsibility for the organization's functioning. The conclusions are that the

obligations of the supervisory role require that the supervisor to be able to constantly balance

between the organisation, its members and their own personal interests, which sometimes leads

to role-conflicts. That the supervisors in their actions based on their role try to fulfil these

obligations, demonstrates that the supervisors obtain a higher position of power towards the

members, which has an impact on the power relationship between them, even though the

relationship is assumed to be equal and responsibilities equally distributed.

Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to analyse conditions that either promote or hamper the implementation of methods for systematic documentation, follow-up and evaluation in social-work services with individuals and families. The theoretical framework consists of organization theories. Human Service Organizations (HSO) theory is complemented with concepts from the new institutionalism, domain theory, implementation theory, and theory about interventions.

A concrete case, a project has been studied. The purpose of project was to implement methods for systematic documentation in public social services. With the notation “integrated” is meant that the methods should be built in and adjusted to the social-work practice. The methods were ASI (Addiction Severity Index) and IUS (a locally based model for integrated evaluation by inspiration from Göran Sandell).

Data has been captured in a pretest/ posttest design (Marlow 2000). This means that “state of things” has been described before the intervention and after. The methods used were surveys and interviews (individual and group). The process has been documented through research notes proceeding records, protocols and some diaries written by social workers. Four municipalities from the middle of Sweden took part with five working groups. Two groups contained social workers acting with children and families and three groups were working with drug abusers. The population consisted of the social workers, the managers responsible for the individual and family entities, the politicians and the clients who were affected during the time of the project.

The implementation of ASI and IUS has not occurred in the extent that was stated in the intervention theory. This means that ASI and IUS were not used in all new cases that occurred during the time of the project. The interviews supposed to be done in the beginning of the clients contact with the agency tended to be done more often than the follow-up interviews. After the project ended, three of five working groups decided to continue to use ASI (one group) and IUS (two groups). The overall impression is that the respondents comprehend, they have the willingness but they do not have the capability of using ASI and IUS. The organization does not seem to have the capacity of imposing requirements and giving resources. The outcomes do not seem to be the most important issue for the social services. These conditions are discussed in the study by means of the theoretical concepts. In the end, there is an effort to adjust the implementation theory to human service organizations.
