Berättande historiebruk -En fallstudie av Per Olov Enquists Legionärerna2019Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This bachelor thesis in history consists of a case study of Per Olov Enquist’s documentary novel

Legionärerna, which examines the Swedish extradition of Baltic soldiers after the Second

World War. The intent of the study is to survey the novel’s use of history from a literary

dimension. It does so by applying the typology of Hayden White, his poetics of history. This

conceptual framework historicizes the historical writing by clarifying how the historical dictum

is constructed in similar manner as fiction, and therefore dependent of its’ author. The result

shows that Enquist uses the history – is constructing it – to object how one earlier has talked

about the extradition by satire previous accounts and by reasoning contextual how one, instead,

should understand the same historical phenomenon. These two aspects are linked to a third, viz,

    Enquist’s Maoist political stance.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In this essay I have investigated the change of letter-writing Swedish Americans' life stories during the period 1927-1938. The purpose of this study was to investigate the fate of Swedish Americans' life stories in the years 1927-1938. In order to make the study of life stories, I have assumed that in those  judgments about the past / present and future as well as assessments of the relationship to their homeland and the new land can be found in correspondence with the home country. To study the life story, I have seen these as indicators of the level from which the following questions are formulated:

    * What was the dominant information contained in the Swedish-American newspapers during the different periods?

    * What are the flashbacks and the present and future assessments  Swedish Americans made in the letters and life stories? *

*How do the writers looked at the Swedish and the U.S society in the letters and life stories?

Research on Swedish Americans' situation in the years 1937-1938 is meticulously with. Has the Swedish American situation studied, it has usually been in a larger study and then have only appeared as parentheses. Research Position regarding emigration and the Great Depression is widespread as separate phenomena. Unite the two, studied Swedish Americans during the recession years are open research issues to be found. Theoretically, my talk dealt with concepts such as identity, culture and narrative elements. The method has been hermeneutic. The study I have concluded that America was a big disappointment for those who just around the Great Depression arrived. Those who went over in the 1920's experienced a few years of good times, but ended abruptly in depression, as reflected in the letters. Exceptions are the unestablished working women who felt they got better. Of the material to judge the weighted otherwise these people the Swedish society more than the U.S.. Often they felt cheated, deceived and betrayed. While they ended up in the crisis, America provided the beginnings of a welfare state building in Sweden. Some returned to Sweden, but many could not afford to do so. The of the hardest hit by the crisis and thus had the greatest reason to yearn for the security of Sweden were often settled in America until the crisis subsided and they could work together money for a passage ticket. Without fully able to confirm it, it seems that the growing security of the new Socialist society in Sweden became more attractive to those who traveled close to the depression and for those most affected.

The Swedish-Americans who had been a long time in America often had a more hopeful attitude, they had known of the bad times in America before. The Swedish-Americans who had been better off had also often a more hopeful attitude. Swedish-Americans who were involved in agriculture seems more have waited out the hard times in America instead of returning to Sweden. They had a more individual approach and in many cases had gone to America as a result of land hunger. Their prospects looked at this way, different than what many of those gainfully employed prospect did. The employed worker perspectives were often shorter and therefore had not the same long-term strategies and hence the same need to confirm the American dream for their environment. Their approach was also more collectivist and were therefore more attracted to the political direction of Sweden took over what the farmers of Swedish-Americans were. In the essay once I have seen how a predominantly hopeful and reflective approach (1927-1930) of its presence in history, the present and the future is shifting into question (1931-1934) and then to action (1935-1938) in his letters home to Sweden. During 1927-1930 presents the most Swedish Americans reflective biographies. They believe the period on American society and looks still a future where, despite the fact that The Great Depression begins to develop. 1931-1934 is considering a questioning attitude in life stories. An increasing number of Swedish-Americans drafted that country they were in did not live up to their dreams and their life story did not include the American dream. 1935-1938, it is not questioning that characterizes the letter writing, but it's determination and transparency. Protective barrier to the home country is gone and the writers acknowledge the greater the distress they experienced. To Sweden attributed the home in terms that they have decided to either stay in America, that they now lived through the worst and that everything can only get better or they write home about her defeat and tells us that they intend to return to Sweden as soon as they can. The relationship to American society against the Swedish follow in much this. During the first period is approaching, most Swedish-American writers in American society. The result is that they are also distancing themselves from Swedish society. During the period of two distances itself a major part of Swedish-Americans away from American society as well as those at the same moment an expression of overtures to the Swedish society. In period three when the goal awareness strengthened by the Swedish-American writers and society business cycle returned upward, it was a third of the writers who clearly distanced themselves from American society. Some of these returned to Sweden, others were not able to do it even though it was their desire. The drawback with the letters as source material has been that the poorest Swedish Americans not been seen partly as a result out of that they had no money for postage and letters and it may have been because they were not literate. Furthermore, the disadvantage of the material to the Swedish-Americans who had an active approach to his Swedish background are not illustrated. These are disadvantages because out there can give a distortion of the source material. The last problem has been partially mitigated by the source material is supplemented with life stories that are recorded afterwards. After all, it has been possible to find biographies of the letters but in the deepest crisis distorted letters to a large extent to the type identities of other Swedish-Americans. This is particularly evident in the letter writer who has a short expectation horizon, ie professional workers. Some time after the crisis, depicting the letters again their own life stories.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In this essay I’m studying an organization that was active in Örebro, Sweden during the time period of 1895-1959. The name of the organization was Pedagogiska sällskapet and was founded by the “folk” school teachers. Together with private girl academies, schools for the deaf and secondary grammar schools they invited everyone interested in education and upbringing questions. The whole teaching staff was working for higher status and bigger interest for their important work from the society, they wanted to reach professionalism. This essay studies Pedagogiska sällskapet from a perspective of professionalism. This essay’s purpose is to study how a smaller dominating organization formed its specific character and which part it possible played in Örebro teaching staff’s tries to become professional. The questions I have asked from resources, which contain board- and society meeting minutes, are divided in two parts. 1) What was the purpose with Pedagogiska sällskapet and what consisted their activity of? Witch people were welcome to take part of the organizations activity? Witch other organizations did Pedagogiska sällskapet work together with and witch did they chose not to cooperate with? Why did the organization stop being active in the end of 1950ies. 2) How can we understand Pedagogiska sällskapets purpose and activity from a perspective of professionalism? In this second part I use different strategies that is used by professionals to se witch identity Pedagogiska sällskapet wanted to create for them selves (for example social closure and alliance). My study shows that the teaching staff used professional strategies in the organization and trough the organization and there for were Pedagogiska sällskapet part of there professional project. It also shows that the identity that the members of the organization created was a liberal elite organization witch sphere of activities consisted of the important education and upbringing questions.

I ständig strävan efter framgång?: föreningsdemokratins innehåll och villkor i Örebro Sportklubb 1908-892014Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this dissertation is to study the conditions of and changes in sociative democracy processes at club level. One sports club is studied, Örebro Sportklubb (ÖSK), from its foundation in 1908 up to 1989. The main sources are club minutes, member magazines and annual reports. Democracy, and its twofolded relation to sport and economy processes, is the main problem area of the study. The specific question is how aspirations for economic effectiveness and sporting success influenced the democracy processes in ÖSK between 1908 and 1989.

The Swedish sports movement has been described as a democratic movement. But the same movement has also been portrayed as an undemocratic movement made of men, for men. The study is based on a broad understanding of the democracy concept where issues of representativeness, influence, participation and knowledge are prominent. At a club level, the study is analysing the contents of the Swedish sports movement's democracy and its change during the 1900s. The thesis also illustrates how the pursuit of economic efficiency affected the associative democracy. These efficiencies were visible already in the 1920s, but was deepened during the 1970s. In short, the democratic range decreased, and successful sections became less and less motivated to finance the deficits of other sections.

But the increased market orientation did not only represent a threat to the associative democracy. Marketisation and commercialization also preconditioned the democracy. At the club arena (Eyravallen), the members met in the clubhouse and café which, in turn, deepened the social capital and friendships within the club.

A repertoire of possibilities: visualized masculinities in a Swedish sportsclub 1908-092015In: Book of abstracts / [ed] Radmann, A., Hedenborg, S., Tsolakidis, E., European College of Sport Science , 2015, p. 280-280Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Introduction and aim When designing our identities we are inclined to use images of our selves, as well as pictures of ’the others’. Images are interwoven with our culture and society, as well as with definitions of history and truth. The overall aim of this study is to analyse, by using a visual method, masculinizing and de-masculizing processes. More specific, the objective is to study how a dominant masculinity manifested itself in associative visuals (and texts), and how these images of domination changed during from 1908 to 1989. Theory and method Drawing inspiration from Bourdieu (2001) and Connell (1995), the theoretical perspective is based on the production and reproduction of a dominant and hegemonic masculinity manuscript at a associative level. Results from their work reveal that images and expectations about men and women make us asymmetrically associated with e. g. sexuality or age. This means that the norms of masculinity dictate how athletics are visualised or objectified. In turn, the norms and actions of masculinity are hierarchical, i.e. men see themselves in relation to a dominant masculinity or an alternative femininity. (This process always includes several other potential power perceptions.) From this perspective ideals and identities can vary both between men and within the same man, when, for example, the context changes. The method is a textual and visual analysis of how the hegemonic manuscript conditions and permeates the images and texts, e. g. in what is being captured or why, how a photograph is taken, how the athlete is portrayed and so on. More specific, the numerical representations of men and women respectively are counted along with more qualitative characteristics of how men and women were portrayed. Results and discussion The photography of a man always contains a potential to construct and categorise differences of gender. The ambition of the study is to say something universal about the mechanisms of the (re)production of male dominance in an organisation. The overall conclusion shows the difference in being objectified or portrayed, visually and textually, with and without respectively, a preserved subject position and status. Although, there are arguments for a changeable masculinity, sometimes the ideal masculine identity shows little variance. The changing aspects are particularly interesting as the study object grasps over an 80- year period. The discussion will focus on what power mechanisms are being used to reproduce a dominant, masculine order in the association. References Bourdieu, Pierre. (2001). Masculine domination. Historicizing Machoism in Swedish Ice Hockey2022In: International Journal of the History of Sport, ISSN 0952-3367, E-ISSN 1743-9035, Vol. 38, no 16, p. 1688-1709Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Male ice hockey has long been regarded as a hyper-masculine sport. More importantly, the so-called machoism has been institutionalized in the ice hockey culture and, due to its comprehensive legitimacy and complexity, it has been impossible to problematize, challenge and ultimately change from within. Identifying ice hockey’s cultural promises, guidelines, psyche, and societal contributions, the controlling of changes is illuminated, which, taken together, help to deepen the understanding of machoism’s stability in sport. Although the journal Hockey is the main historical source, interviews, the media, and biographies have also been used. As Sweden is located between what was then the Soviet Union and North America, the Swedish Ice Hockey Association was inspired by these dominating ice hockey models. The professional and, mostly, Canadian hockey style gradually gained ground. In short, the appreciated masculine ideals interlinked with commercial forces and the tactical strategies of the game. By showing the culture’s stability and complexity, previous research on masculine domination in ice hockey is nuanced and complemented.

In The Name of Democracy: Varieties and continuities of associative sports masculinities at club level during the 20th century2015Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

During the first half of the 20th century the Swedish Sports Confederation became the dominant sports organisation in Sweden. In short, the organisation adapted a representative democratic principle and argued that it fostered its members to democratic citizens. In turn, this legitimised annual state grants but did not prevent long-time male domination within Swedish sports. This paper deals with the contradictive contents of sports masculinity (e. g. being similarly democratic and exclusionary) and, more specific, it focuses the long-time duration of masculine domination in a Swedish, voluntary sports club and how different visual and textual strategies were used to strengthen the masculine hegemony in the organisation.

The method draws inspiration from the concept of hegemonic masculinity, understood as something restraining and contradictive, and Wetherell & Edley's (1999) more fine-grained analytical tool called “imaginary positions”. The source materials are texts and photos in members reviews of Örebro Sports Club and the chronological period is two-folded divided from the foundation of the club in 1908 to 1933 and from 1967 up until 1989 when the club was dissolved into different juridical persons.

The results show that masculine positions were not only about winning and expressing a successful, active and struggling masculinity. The hegemonic (and heroic) position offered a range of possibilities to express and visualize masculinity but the very same position, on the other hand, contained plain borders towards deviant sexuality, functionality, ethnicity and gender. The discussion involves an approach to understand the results in relation to the difficulties of challenging patriarchy and male domination in sports.

    Abstract [en]

From both a quantitative and qualitative perspective, research shows that men and masculinities have dominated the Swedish sports movement for a long time and that sport as a so-called ‘democratic people’s movement’ has been criticised for being a male movement. Given the self-made claims of the Swedish Sports Confederation’s fostering of inclusivity and democratisation, this study encompasses a critical and historical perspective on the inclusive and exclusive dimensions of sport. The study object is a Swedish sports club and the specific aim is to analyse the prevailing norms and ideals and how they eventually helped to reproduce men’s domination in a local sports club. Chronologically, the paper uses a historical comparative approach studying the club’s 1910s–1920s and 1970s–1980s. The research questions put are: What characterised the norms of the ideal member and collective membership in terms of gender and did these change over time? Is it possible to find specific examples of inclusion and exclusion techniques by studying the club’s photographs and stories? The main result shows subtle and explicit power techniques that reproduced (some) men’s superior position at the club level.

    Abstract [en]

Ice hockey has traditionally been a male-dominated culture that has both promoted and legitimised masculine dominance and gender inequality. The question is, how might ice hockey games, or other male-dominated sports, be organised differently and thus become more gender equal? Our ambition in this article is to initiate a discussion about how the construction of gender in ice hockey events operationalises or opposes the dominance of men and the marginalisation of women. The specific purpose is to identify techniques that configure men/masculinities as dominant in the ice hockey culture. Taking critical studies of men and masculinities as the point of departure, with a specific focus on the situational aspects of gender construction, this case study makes use of participatory observations of eight qualification games in Swedish semi-professional ice hockey. Our results show that men and certain types of masculinity dominate in the events framing the game and how this links the ice hockey players and the club with the local body-worker culture and its industrial, economic and historical context. Identification with these men is ideally created amongst male spectators, given that children and women do not have the same obvious place in the event’s narrative. Some clubs seek to include women and children in their matches, which affects both the atmosphere and the situation. By focusing on the events’ introductions and general narratives, and how they make use of a (masculine) version of the place’s past in the present, we discuss how the ice hockey culture contributes to the current hegemony of men and masculinities.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this article is to challenge the image of Swedish sports as an amateuristic, unified and democratic people’s movement. With references to Pierre Bourdieu, Swedish sports is analysed in terms of field, capitals and poles. The article shows how the strive towards a successful (male) senior football team in Örebro Sportklubb (ÖSK) and the administration of the sports centre (Eyravallen) resulted in an increased engagement of coaches, and thus an increased prioritisation of economic and academic capital at the expense of ideological capital. The source materials consist of club material and with the chronological focus on the 1920s and 1930s the article argues, in contrast to former research, that the processes of professionalisation, commercialisation and the enhanced focus on winning started long before the decision to overturn the amateur regulations in 1967.

Strategispel för att utveckla historiemedvetande -Historiska biografier i Sid Meier’s Civilization 2019Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay concerns how historical biographies in the computer game Sid Meier’s Civilization can be used to develop the players historical consciousness. The purpose of this essay is to explore how this game can develop historical consciousness through its biographical portraying of historical individuals. The purpose is also to examine how these biographies relates to the historical biography as genre. The theoretical framework is based on a definition of the genre and historical consciousness through narration. By using a narrative analysis as a method, according to Seymor Chatmans definition of narrative, the biographies in the game are analyzed. In conclusion the analysis shows how the historical biographies in Sid Meier’s Civilization relates to the genre and has potential to develop the players historical consciousness.

Narration, life and meaning in history and fiction2022In: Scandinavian Journal of History, ISSN 0346-8755, E-ISSN 1502-7716, Vol. 47, no 1, p. 62-82Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article addresses two subjects relating to the topic of this issue of Scandinavian Journal of History from a 'difference approach' in narratology. This means that we assume that words like 'narrative' and 'fiction' are used to denote different things and that it is important to distinguish between these uses. We also assume that narrative texts that share similar surface structures can still 'do' different things and are approached differently by readers. The first issue we focus on concerns history writing and narrative. We are especially interested in the discussion about the distinction between narrative history writing and literary fiction. When discussing this issue, we distinguish between different uses of terms like 'narrative', 'fictiveness', and 'fiction'. The second issue concerns the application of narratology as a method in the analysis of oral and written texts. We suggest that narratological concepts like narrator and perspective do not have the same denotation in the analysis of literary fiction as in the analysis of non-fictional narratives, and hence that narratology with its many concepts cannot be applied indiscriminately. In the discussion of these issues, we refer to factual and fictional written and oral texts concerned with migration.

Det är rätt att göra uppror! Textanalys av den anakroniska rörelsen Vänskapsföreningen Sverige – Det Nya Peru2021Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In this Bachelor Thesis The Writers Aim To investigate the portrayal of the Soviet Union in the cold war. This portrayal is investigated using two different approaches, one qualitative and one quantitative. The qualitative method examine, through a textual analysis, the portrayal of the Soviet Union in two schoolbooks produced in different years. The first textbook produced in the year of 1996 and the second one in 2012. The quantitative method approach the problem by using a content analysis were the aim focus is to see if the portrayal of the Soviet Union is more positive than negative or vice versa. This is Examined By using a formulation called the coefficient of imbalance, Which is applied to classify content data as positive or negative. Four books are included in the quantitative content analysis, the earliest one is produced in 1986 and the latest in 2011. Both analysis uses the same theoretical background and previous researches, the theoretical background is in this case the use of history. Klas-Göran Karlssons typology over the use of history is the base of the theoretical background. Both analysis are presented separately to be presented together beneath "7. Slutsats" and "8. Diskussion". By merging the two analysis the two authors Could draw a conclusion. The conclusion show That the textbooks portray the Former Soviet Union in a dismissive manor. Some of the use of history had influenced the content in the textbooks, but the Majority didn't. The two use of history that had influenced the textbooks were “non-use of history” and “ideological history”. But the authors clarify that “none-use of history” has affected the portrayal of the cold war history of the Soviet Union.

En studie av Örebro lokalpress under mellankrigstiden2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Silent History: Body Language and Nonverbal Identity, 1860-19142018Book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The written and verbal traces of the past have been extensively studied by historians, but what about the nonverbal traces? In recent years, historians have expanded their attention to other kinds of sources, but seldom have they taken into account the most vital and omnipresent nonverbal aspect of life - body language. Silent History explores the potential of early photography to uncover the structure and nature of everyday body language in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Through a close study of street photography by pioneering photographers who were the first to document urban everyday life with hidden cameras, Peter Andersson examines a key period of history in a new light. By focusing on a number of body poses and gestures common to the nonverbal communication of the fin de siècle, he reveals the identifications and connotations of daily social interaction beyond the written word. Andersson also depicts a broader picture of the body and its relationship to popular culture by placing photographic analysis within a context of magazine illustration, caricature, music-hall entertainment, and the elusive urban subcultures of the day. Studying archival photographs from Austria, England, and Sweden, Silent History provides a clear picture of the emergence of the modern bodily conventions that still define us.

    Abstract [en]

This article discusses the clowning element of a German version of Hamlet believed to date back to the time of Shakespeare. Der bestrafte Brudermord is noted as an adaptation of Shakespeare's tragedy which incorporates a lot more low comedy than any extant version of Hamlet and provides opportunity for contemplating the reason why Hamlet has no explicit clown character. The article focuses especially on a character appearing very briefly in the German play, a rustic buffoon called Jens, and his affinity with the rustics and comic servants of other Shakespeare plays and other Elizabethan plays. It is particularly asserted that this role shows signs of the involvement of the clown Will Kemp at some stage of the writing of Hamlet, or of touring continental Europe with an adaptation of it that puts the clowning element at the forefront.
