Class as deviance: constructing the support for and opposition against Hugo Chávez2011Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

By applying the methods of Critical Discourse Analysis this paper aims to explore how ideology works within the discursive construction of class, in the representation of the supporters and opponents of the government of Hugo Chávez in Venezuela. News items from New York Times (US), El País (Uruguay) and Dagens Nyheter (Sweden) constitute the analyzed material. The paper argues that class-markers are important in the representation of government supporters, whom many times are constructed as belonging to the poorer sectors of society. Class is however less explicit in the representation of Chávez-opposition, which in fact is lead by elite groups. It is therefore argued that class in this context becomes a marker of deviance, which in turn works ideologically in legitimizing oppositional groups and disqualifying the support for Chávez’ government.

Efter kärnfamiljen: familjepraktiker efter skilsmässa2008Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This dissertation is about post-divorce families. The central question is how family is constructed after divorce. The aim is to study how family relationships are negotiated, transformed and reproduced after the separation. The research is based on 24 in-depth interviews with twelve young adults, between the ages of 21 and 29, with divorced parents. Their narratives about their families are analysed using a theoretical framework inspired by the individualization theories (Beck & Beck-Gernsheim 2001; Giddens 1997, 1995) and the doing family perspective (Morgan 1996; Silva & Smart 1999a), especially focusing on the concepts of negotiation and family practices. More specific questions raised in the dissertation are how are family boundaries drawn by the young adults? How do the interviewees understand the new organization of their families, which has been renegotiated after the separation? What perception of motherhood and fatherhood can be found in the narratives? And, finally, to what extent are family relationships after divorce negotiated in the way that the individualization theories claim?

The results show a quite complex picture of family life after divorce. While both parents are often described as participating parents, the family practices after divorce appear clearly gendered. The mother’s involvement in taking care of the child seems not to be negotiable in the same way as the father’s. Hence, motherhood appears natural and taken for granted to a much greater extent than fatherhood. The negotiations between the parents after divorce can be of both an explicit and implicit character according to the narratives, but yet another kind of negotiation are the indirect negotiations. In these negotiations, the child is used as a go-between or carrier, a position that seems to limit their own possibility to participate in the decision making. Another aspect that seems to diminish children’s participation is the principle of loyalty to both their biological parents. The results also show that the children’s living arrangements after divorce are characterized by changes and renegotiations rather than being permanent. The parents’ new partners are described in different ways in the narratives, however, they are often seen as turning points that have a major influence on the family relationships. The nuclear family as a normative ideal is present in all the interviews but in different ways. While some express an explicit critique of it, others regard it as something that they want for themselves in the future. What constitutes a family according to the narratives? Firstly, blood ties and formal relationships are pointed out. Secondly, the feeling of solidarity and closeness is viewed perhaps as the most evident element of family life. This feeling can be created by open communication as well as by spending time together on a regular basis. Thirdly, growing up together and/or sharing everyday life practices are also considered as vital to develop and maintain close family ties. This means that the family boundaries after divorce are renegotiated over time rather than permanent. These negotiations take place in a certain context, where gender norms, earlier experiences and other social relationships play an important role.

Datorn i skolan: En kvalitativ studie om lärares attityder2010Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract [en]

The idea that women should take the responsibility for home and family and men should be the breadwinners is less dominant today. On the basis of a study of the division of labour within Swedish families, this is an examination of the way in which gender identity and power relations influence the negotiations between partners, given the differing interests. As this study shows there is rarely equality on this question between married or cohabiting partners, despite the dominants ideas of one or the other sex, and even when the women work full-time (the division is a lot more equal in young couples without children). The explanation of this inequality lies in the weight of gender norms and in the different expectations linked to parental roles. It is nevertheless apparent that women with greater resources in terms of education, income or professional status more often break with these norms and impose their demands concerning the division of labour within the couple.

    Abstract

The purpose of this study was partly to investigate how leaders motivate their employees according to intrinsic and extrinsic motivational aspects, partly to see which style of leadership that leaders exercise based on transformal and transanctional leadership with regard to how they motivate their employees. The following issues are addressed in my study:

 How do leaders motivate their employees according intrinsic and extrinsic motivation aspects?

 How can the leaderships be described from transformal as well as transanctional leadership depending how leaders motivates their employees?

 Are there differences between how the interviewed leaders create motivation among their employees? If there are differences, how would you characterize them?

I answered the questions by using a qualitative inquiry in the form of five interviews. As analysis tools I have used the terms intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, transformal and transanctional leadership. My conclusion is that there are differences in how leaders motivate their employees, but they all use both internal and external motivation aspects. The greatest part of transformal leadership among the leaders its shown in how leaders motivate their employees, but some of the leaders also show a certain amount of transanctional leadership based on how they create motivation.

Perceptions of power in regional networks: a nordic comparative analysis2009In: Local Government Studies, ISSN 0300-3930, E-ISSN 1743-9388, Vol. 35, no 5, p. 595-614Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this article is to explore the differentiated attitudes towards power in Nordic regional networks. The analysis draws upon a unique comparative survey targeting regional network participants in Finland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark. Three specific issues of power are studied: (1) the perceived influence of different actors in regional networks, (2) the perceived mandate of network members, and (3) the perceived impact of networks on regional development. When searching for the national political specifics that might determine participants' different attitudes, State administrative traditions and regional institutional set-ups are of particular interest. While regional governance in all countries is going through a period of transformative flux, the results show strong association with historical paths. The western countries' networks are characterised by less State influence, more influence by regional stakeholders, greater discretionary power of network members, and they are perceived to have more of an impact on regional development than their eastern counterparts. The results suggest that networks do not represent dichotomous alternatives to formal institutions of regional policy-making, but that they are linked to them in complex ways.

Samtal och diskussion i klassrummet2009Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In this essay I have investigated the change of letter-writing Swedish Americans' life stories during the period 1927-1938. The purpose of this study was to investigate the fate of Swedish Americans' life stories in the years 1927-1938. In order to make the study of life stories, I have assumed that in those  judgments about the past / present and future as well as assessments of the relationship to their homeland and the new land can be found in correspondence with the home country. To study the life story, I have seen these as indicators of the level from which the following questions are formulated:

    * What was the dominant information contained in the Swedish-American newspapers during the different periods?

    * What are the flashbacks and the present and future assessments  Swedish Americans made in the letters and life stories? *

*How do the writers looked at the Swedish and the U.S society in the letters and life stories?

Research on Swedish Americans' situation in the years 1937-1938 is meticulously with. Has the Swedish American situation studied, it has usually been in a larger study and then have only appeared as parentheses. Research Position regarding emigration and the Great Depression is widespread as separate phenomena. Unite the two, studied Swedish Americans during the recession years are open research issues to be found. Theoretically, my talk dealt with concepts such as identity, culture and narrative elements. The method has been hermeneutic. The study I have concluded that America was a big disappointment for those who just around the Great Depression arrived. Those who went over in the 1920's experienced a few years of good times, but ended abruptly in depression, as reflected in the letters. Exceptions are the unestablished working women who felt they got better. Of the material to judge the weighted otherwise these people the Swedish society more than the U.S.. Often they felt cheated, deceived and betrayed. While they ended up in the crisis, America provided the beginnings of a welfare state building in Sweden. Some returned to Sweden, but many could not afford to do so. The of the hardest hit by the crisis and thus had the greatest reason to yearn for the security of Sweden were often settled in America until the crisis subsided and they could work together money for a passage ticket. Without fully able to confirm it, it seems that the growing security of the new Socialist society in Sweden became more attractive to those who traveled close to the depression and for those most affected.

The Swedish-Americans who had been a long time in America often had a more hopeful attitude, they had known of the bad times in America before. The Swedish-Americans who had been better off had also often a more hopeful attitude. Swedish-Americans who were involved in agriculture seems more have waited out the hard times in America instead of returning to Sweden. They had a more individual approach and in many cases had gone to America as a result of land hunger. Their prospects looked at this way, different than what many of those gainfully employed prospect did. The employed worker perspectives were often shorter and therefore had not the same long-term strategies and hence the same need to confirm the American dream for their environment. Their approach was also more collectivist and were therefore more attracted to the political direction of Sweden took over what the farmers of Swedish-Americans were. In the essay once I have seen how a predominantly hopeful and reflective approach (1927-1930) of its presence in history, the present and the future is shifting into question (1931-1934) and then to action (1935-1938) in his letters home to Sweden. During 1927-1930 presents the most Swedish Americans reflective biographies. They believe the period on American society and looks still a future where, despite the fact that The Great Depression begins to develop. 1931-1934 is considering a questioning attitude in life stories. An increasing number of Swedish-Americans drafted that country they were in did not live up to their dreams and their life story did not include the American dream. 1935-1938, it is not questioning that characterizes the letter writing, but it's determination and transparency. Protective barrier to the home country is gone and the writers acknowledge the greater the distress they experienced. To Sweden attributed the home in terms that they have decided to either stay in America, that they now lived through the worst and that everything can only get better or they write home about her defeat and tells us that they intend to return to Sweden as soon as they can. The relationship to American society against the Swedish follow in much this. During the first period is approaching, most Swedish-American writers in American society. The result is that they are also distancing themselves from Swedish society. During the period of two distances itself a major part of Swedish-Americans away from American society as well as those at the same moment an expression of overtures to the Swedish society. In period three when the goal awareness strengthened by the Swedish-American writers and society business cycle returned upward, it was a third of the writers who clearly distanced themselves from American society. Some of these returned to Sweden, others were not able to do it even though it was their desire. The drawback with the letters as source material has been that the poorest Swedish Americans not been seen partly as a result out of that they had no money for postage and letters and it may have been because they were not literate. Furthermore, the disadvantage of the material to the Swedish-Americans who had an active approach to his Swedish background are not illustrated. These are disadvantages because out there can give a distortion of the source material. The last problem has been partially mitigated by the source material is supplemented with life stories that are recorded afterwards. After all, it has been possible to find biographies of the letters but in the deepest crisis distorted letters to a large extent to the type identities of other Swedish-Americans. This is particularly evident in the letter writer who has a short expectation horizon, ie professional workers. Some time after the crisis, depicting the letters again their own life stories.

Pragmatiska studier av meningsskapande2008In: Utbildning och Demokrati, ISSN 1102-6472, E-ISSN 2001-7316, Vol. 17, no 3, p. 11-24Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The overall aim of the article is to present a pragmatic approach for studies of meaning-making used in the articles of this issue. The approach, which is developed within the SMEDgroup (Studies of Meaning-making in Educational Discourses), mainly builds on the writings of John Dewey, Ludwig Wittgenstein and Michel Foucault. A common ambition for the researchers in SMED is to enable studies and discussions on questions concerning how meanings are made in people’s actions. Another ambition is to carry out these studies beyond assumptions of dualism, essentialism, causality and determinism. In this perspective learning and socialization are viewed in a communicative perspective. We argue in the article that our approach makes it possible, and important, to study meaning-making in action in different kinds of educational practices.

Etik och strategiska bloggar: När bloggen blir PR-verktyg2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

News in the Ugandan press: The case of The New Vision2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

A consensus among media and communication scholars and professionals that the media is responsible for informing, educating and entertaining the public highlights the duty and power it has in a given society. By selecting, presenting and emphasizing certain news topics from the available thousands of topics and given news values, the media has the ability to influence the attitudes and beliefs of the people in one way or another. Therefore, I found it imperative to explore the front page of The New Vision, which has the highest readership in Uganda so as to establish the characteristics of the news received by the majority of newspaper readers who also constitute elites who make the laws that govern the population. The major aim of this study which is grounded in gatekeeping and news values literature is to ascertain the most common news values, topics, focus and type of the most prominently presented news items on the front page.

I used two research methods: (1) a content analysis of the news items published between January 1 2009 and March 31 2009 and (2) a survey of news writers and top editors who make major decisions on what finally gets into the newspaper.  The content analysis showed that on average, three hard news items are published on the front page. Each news article has an average of five news values but the lead news story, which is the most newsworthy, has about six. News about crime, law and order was the most frequent, followed by internal politics. However, the most prominently presented stories were about internal politics. Additionally, positive news was frequent but the lead news had a negative focus. Additionally, it appears that attractive headlines suggesting conflict and drama were also used to woo readers. The other noticable findings were that The New Vision editors are older, experienced and more educated than news gatherers (reporters, bureau chiefs and photographers). Both news gatherers and news processors largely use news values as a yard stick to determine which news stories get into the newspaper. I conclude that the news stories published in the newspaper go through a rigorous process which is influenced by several factors. This process, which includes news gathering, writing, shaping, sorting and presentation, is guided by news values which do not entirely guarantee a given news item a place in the newspaper.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]
