Editorial multimodality and society2024In: Multimodality & Society, ISSN 2634-9795, E-ISSN 2634-9809Article in journal (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This issue, the first of volume 4, marks the start of Multimodality & Society’s fourth year and provides a good moment to look across the past 3 years to review and reflect on the journal’s contribution to multimodality. Multimodality & Society aims to consolidate and advance multimodal theory, methodologies, and empirical understanding of interaction and communication. This editorial considers the collective contribution of the 12 issues published to date and points to how the journal can continue to push the boundaries of multimodality forward. We highlight the significance of the journal’s expansion of multimodal formats, and several directions embedded in the journal scope which we have advanced.

Discourses in and Around Upcycled Artefacts: A Social Semiotic Perspective2021In: State-of-the-Art Upcycling Research and Practice: Proceedings of the International Upcycling Symposium 2020 / [ed] Kyungeun Sung; Jagdeep Singh; Ben Bridgens, Springer, 2021, p. 29-32Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter employs a social semiotic perspective to explore global/local discourses of upcycled artefacts. Social semiotics bring a focus on meaning-making to the emerging field of upcycling studies: in what ways does the social practice of upcycling produce meanings of, for instance, value adding, emancipation, or sustainability? In particular, this chapter focuses on the aesthetic and functional values that are added in upcycling that address the demands of different local and global markets. An interest in the relation between social practices, materiality and meaning-making is at the core of social semiotics, and this chapter focuses on how discourses in and around an upcycled artefact make it possible for it to move between cultural and geographical spaces, whilst both maintaining and transforming the meaning potential of the artefact.

The 'semiotics of value' in upcycling2018In: Advancing multimodal and critical discourse studies: Interdisciplinary research inspired by Theo van Leeuwen's social semiotics / [ed] Sumin Zhao, Emilia Djonov, Anders Björkvall, Morten Boeriis, New York: Routledge, 2018, 1, p. 165-180Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The last twenty years has seen the rise of global consumer movements that critique overconsumption, focusing on looking at the whole life of a product or artefact. Practices like ‘recycling’ (re-use without necessarily adding value) and ‘upcycling’ (re-use with obvious value adding) are part of such movements. This chapter looks at value adding in artefacts from a social semiotic perspective in order to explore upcycling as branding in a global context. It draws on van Leeuwen’s (2005) distinction between theoretical and actual semiotic potential of semiotic resources when key branding resources, such as typography, shape, materials, and colour are identified in upcycled artefacts. The connotative and experiential provenance (Kress and van Leeuwen, 2001) of these resources are of key importance for our analysis. We look at how resources are resemiotizised and recontextualised and, to various degrees, recognised in upcycled artefacts  that  move between South Africa and Europe. One of the conclusions is that the processes of value adding through re-branding can be described as spatio-linguistic re-branding or sensory re-branding (cf. Djonov and van Leeuwen, 2011).

Artefakters betydelsepotentialer: En presentation av den sociosemiotiska etnografin som teori och metod2012In: Nordisk socialsemiotik: Pædagogiske, multimodale og sprogvidenskabelige landvindinger / [ed] Thomas Hestbæk Andersen & Morten Boeriis, Odense: Syddansk Universitetsforlag , 2012, p. 59-88Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

Critical genre analysis of management texts in the public sector: Towards a theoretical and methodological framework2018In: Kritiska text- och diskursstudier / [ed] Wojahn, Daniel, Seiler Brylla, Charlotta & Westberg, Gustav, Huddinge, Sweden: Södertörns högskola , 2018, 1, p. 57-79Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

An emerging genre at Swedish public authorities – ‘platform of values’ (Swedish ‘värdegrund’) or ‘value statement’/‘core values’ – functions as a backdrop to the theoretical and methodological discussions in this paper. The paper argues for the development of a critical genre analysis that goes beyond being primarily descriptive and that has its main expla- natory value at a level of generality above mode-specific features of, for instance, language or images. Based on a review of how the term ‘critical’ has been defined and applied in relation to genre in critical discourse analysis/studies (CDA/CDS), multimodality, and genre studies of profes- sional communication a number of prerequisites for a critical genre analysis are formulated. Based on these prerequisites, affordance and pro- venance are put forward as ‘true’ multimodal concepts that can form the foundation for a critical genre analysis of, in this case, multimodal ‘plat- form of values’ texts. The applicability of these concepts is illustrated through an analysis of a ‘platform of value’ text from an administrative court in Sweden.

Places and Spaces for Multimodal Writing in ‘One-to-One’ Computing2015In: Multimodality in Writing: The State of the Art in Theory, Methodology and Pedagogy / [ed] Arlene Archer & Esther Breuer, Leiden & Boston: Brill Academic Publishers , 2015, p. 204-230Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In ‘one-to-one’ computing, schools provide learners with individual laptops. This chapter presents an analysis of how such laptops are used for writing and text creation by students in two secondary schools. The chapter is framed by a theoretical interest in the interconnections between uses of ‘one-to-one’ laptops in physical places, the virtual spaces they may ‘open up’, and their uses for performing semiotic actions. The results point to differences and possible inequalities in terms of how students perceive and use the semiotic potentials of the laptops as a means for engaging with and acting on the world through writing in combination with other semiotic modes.

    Abstract [en]

Professor Gunther Kress is one of the international leading researchers in the fields of multimodality, social semiotics, discourse analysis, genre studies and education. He has published widely in these fields, and has a new book out in 2016: Multimodality, learning and communication: A social semiotic frame (written together with Jeff Bezemer). Kress has supervised more than 60 PhD researchers over the years, an experience that he draws upon in the chapter ‘Researching in conditions of provisionality: Reflecting on the PhD in the digital and multimodal era’ (2012). Anders Björkvall met up with him in London in order to discuss a number of topics, ranging from the broader challenges of higher education today to the relation between theory and methodology in the PhD.

Practices of visual communication in a primary school classroom: Digital image collection as a potential semiotic mode2014In: Classroom Discourse, ISSN 1946-3014, E-ISSN 1946-3022, Vol. 5, no 1, p. 22-37Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

One-to-onecomputing projects in which learners work with individual laptops or tablets across subjects are rapidly increasing in number. One aspect of this is that as the laptops give access to the Internet; digital images and texts – potentially from all over the globe move into the classroom in an unprecedented manner. The paper presents an analysis of specific classroom practices involving seven- to eight-year-olds: the collecting of digital images and their use as semiotic resources in the creation of multimodal texts. The aim is to describe the childrens digital image collections as more or less mode-like that is, as a more or less systematically organised set of resources for making meaning. The methodology is described as social semiotic ethnography, combining semiotic analysis of images and texts with ethnographic understandings of the personal histories and interests of participants. The paper concludes that there are obvious practices in the classroom in which the children use their image collections in a mode-like way, such as categorising images according to semantic criteria, using them for display of identities in the classroom and systematically using them when designing multimodal texts, expressing both simple denotational meanings and more complex connotational semiotic potentials. Another conclusion is that the childrens image collections have untapped learning potentials, for example regarding critical reflections on how images create meaning, which could form the foundation for concrete learning activities in the classroom.

Social identities offered in Swedish magazine advertising2007In: Critical discourse analysis of media texts, València: Universitat de València , 2007, p. 234-244Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The consumer culture of late modernity, the gender system, and the concept of the model reader are taken as points of departure for the analysis of identities offered in Swedish magazine ads. The model readers are regarded as socially motivated identities that are offered to the empirical readers of the ads. On the one hand, the model readers are treated as textual realisations of the consumer culture and the gender system and, on the other, as varying with respect to target group. The multimodal textual composition of the ads as well as ideational and interpersonal meanings are analysed along with intertextual and interdiscursive relations.

One major result is that the model readers in the ads with male target groups tend to be already active, successful and leadership-oriented, whereas model readers in ads with female target groups tend to be more passive, and need the product to adjust or improve themselves.

Svensk barnmatsmärkning: En diskursanalytisk studie av märkningens design och tillgänglighet2000Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

The report reviews a study of the design and accessibility of Swedish baby food labels for infant formula, gruel, and baby porridge. As the study was carried out within an EU-project in which four other European countries participated, comparisons with results from these countries are made. The final chapter of the report contains recommendations for the improvement of the accessibility of the Swedish labels.

The theoretical approach to accessibility is that of discourse analysis. For this reason, the study incorporates the producers of the labels, i.e. the manufacturers and the advertising agencies, the linguistic and semiotic construction of the labels themselves, and the readers of the labels.

Only a few potential accessibility problems on the labels were identified in the label analysis. This result was confirmed by a consumer study, in which it was concluded that the labels caused no major accessibility problems to the average consumer. However, parents that were not native speakers of Swedish tended to think that the labels were more difficult to understand than native speakers of Swedish.

Further, the analysis of the labels showed that the gruel and porridge labels tend, with a few exceptions, to be more sales oriented than the infant formula labels. The comparisons with results from the other EU-countries showed that the Swedish labels as a whole contained fewer commercial and potentially misleading features than the labels from the other countries.

    Abstract [sv]

The article reviews an analysis of the textual construction of Swedish baby food labels for infant formula, gruel and baby porridge. The analysis was performed as part of an EU-project called "Design and accessibility of baby food labelling from the consumer’s point of view" in which, in addition to Sweden, four other European countries participated.

Swedish and European labelling legislation forms the foundation for the analysis. Certain information, such as a list of ingredients and preparation instructions, is obligatory on the labels, while other information is prohibited. Examples of prohibited information include pictures or text, which may idealise the use of the product, on infant formula labels.

The methodological approach in the article is partly discourse analytical, because the labels are related to a number of contexts, and partly semiotic, because of the multimodal character of the labels.

It is revealed that there are differences concerning the choice of words and pictures on the labels in the three different product categories. The Swedish gruel and porridge labels tend, with a few exceptions, to be more sales oriented than the infant formula labels, including, for example, a more frequent use of emotive and evaluative words, and a larger number of pictures of smiling parents and babies.

    Abstract [en]

This article discusses the explanatory value of two theoretical orientations within multimodal research on texts and communication, and it explores the potential benefits of combining them. Firstly, the multimodal text (involving other semiotic modes than language) can be taken as a point of departure for the analysis and understanding of meaning making. This has been a common approach within text and discourse analysis. Secondly, there is an orientation toward the multimodal resources being employed when people make meaning, placing the interests of sign-/text-makers and processes of text creation just as much in focus as the textual products that emerge from them.

The discussions in the article primarily make reference to the broader framework of social semiotic multimodality research, taking the theoretical assumptions made in Kress & van Leeuwen’s influential book Reading images: The grammar of visual design (2006) as one important point of departure. In particular, research categorised under the tentative labels of multimodal discourse analysis, social semiotic multimodal analysis and multimodal interactional analysis is reviewed and related to the status the authors ascribe to texts and semiotic resources. The text analytical implications of text and resource orientations and combinations of the two are finally illustrated by a sample analysis of multimodal texts created by children in educational contexts.

The business of turning children into consumers: A diachronic analysis of the symbolic exchange of goods and services in advertisements in a Swedish comic book2008In: Bridging Discourses: ASFLA 2007 online proceedings / [ed] Michele Zappavigna & Carmel Cloran, ASFLA , 2008Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The child as a consumer is not a new concept but a changing one. This paper discusses the development of discourses around Swedish child consumers during the 20th century. The data comprise advertisements from the Swedish comic book Donald Duck & Co from the 1940s through the 1980s. The methodology is inspired by the systemic functional linguistic view of basic speech functions; an analysis of how child readers are incorporated in the symbolic exchange of goods and services through the use of commands and offers is presented. One finding is that child readers of early texts are ascribed little power over their own consumption. They are commanded and/or offered a chance to ‘compete’, to ‘win’, and to ‘mail’, but rarely to make direct consumer decisions. In the 1980s, a more competent child consumer can be discerned, commanded to ‘buy’ and to make independent consumer decisions.

The emotional civil servant: On the multimodal construction of affect in ‘platform of values’ texts of Swedish public authorities2023In: Organizational Semiotics: Multimodal Perspectives on Organization Studies / [ed] Louise Ravelli, Theo van Leeuwen, Markus A. Höllerer, Dennis Jancsary, New York & Abingdon, UK: Routledge, 2023, 1, p. 99-121Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The contemporary textual landscape of public authorities is flooded with ‘vision and values’ or ‘platform of values’ texts. Some of these texts contain multimodal offers of affects, such as ‘happiness’ or ‘courage’. This chapter presents an analysis of the functions of the ‘affect-driven civil servant’ in multimodal ‘vision and values’ texts of public authorities in Sweden, along with a discussion about the organizational and professional practices of which they are a part. Departing from social semiotics and multimodal critical discourse studies, the analysis draws on Wetherell’s notion of affect as discursive meaning-making and Bhatia’s critical genre analysis in order to discuss the affective aspects of multimodal texts as part of professional practice and culture. The primary data comprise ‘platform of values’ texts of public authorities in Sweden from 2016, which have been matched with secondary data in the form of a video recorded two-hour focus group discussion with seven senior civil servants/managers responsible for ‘value work’ at their respective public authority. The results show how affect as semiotic potential is used to create a new type of identity for the civil servant – as a means of ‘softly’ governing organizations through multimodal texts.

Ecologies of ‘upcycling’ as design for learning in Higher Education2016In: Short papers, 2016, p. 7-12Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

As society changes, new ways of understanding and using existing semiotic resources are needed. This study looks at artefacts from a social semiotic perspective in order to explore the concepts of ‘recycling’ and ‘upcycling’ and their relevance for pedagogy in Higher Education. We look at recycling in terms of ‘texts’ and employ methodological tools from multimodal discourse analysis. ‘Recycling’ involves converting materials from one product to create a different product with a different function, without necessarily adding any type of value. In ‘upcycling’, economic, aesthetic or functional value is always added. ‘Upcycling’ can thus be understood as a process of recontextualization of semiotic resources, in both spatio-linguistic and sensory terms. This paper looks at how resources are recontextualized as part of global ecologies of production and consumption. Then, we explore these insights in the pedagogical domain, looking at possible implications of the principles of ‘upcycling’ and value adding through design as a means for educating global critical citizens.

Semiotics of destruction: Traces on the environment2022In: Visual Communication, ISSN 1470-3572, E-ISSN 1741-3214, Vol. 21, no 2, p. 218-236Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Research in fields such as multimodality and semiotics has focused on creation of value in different forms: aesthetic, economic and symbolic. However, the destruction of value has attracted much less attention. The aim of this article is to identify social, semiotic and ideological functions of acts of destruction based on an analysis of the traces these acts leave on the urban environment. Five overarching acts of destruction are discussed, but the authors’ main focus is on what they call transformation-driven and social presence-driven destruction, with two examples from Sweden and South Africa. The article discusses sanctioned destructive acts that are largely in compliance with dominating semiotic regimes at a certain time and place, as well as disruptive actions that challenge or even disobey those regimes. The analysis shows how a distinction between sanctioned and disruptive is in no way clear and often depends on complex power distributions between semiotic regimes at a given time and place. In fact, traces in the physical environment that may point to or index highly destructive acts can, in relation to other semiotic regimes, be regarded as creative and constructive. The authors argue that the semiotic processes of destruction and the traces they leave deserve more attention from research in the fields of multimodality and semiotics.

Wedin, Lund: Studentlitteratur AB, 2010, 1, p. 193-214Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Young children’s exploration of semiotic resources during unofficial computer activities in the classroom2010In: Journal of Early Childhood Literacy, ISSN 1468-7984, E-ISSN 1741-2919, Vol. 10, no 3, p. 271-293Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The article describes and discusses the learning potential of unofficial techno-literacy activities in the classroom with regards to Swedish 7–8-year-olds’ exploration of semiotic resources when interacting with computers. In classroom contexts where every child works with his or her own computer, such activities tend to take up a substantial amount of time. The children have access to a wide range of sites and programs and show an interest in discovering these resources. The article thus explores a previously often neglected site for learning, located in the official classroom context but involving self-chosen activities with contemporary technology. In terms of theory and methodology, social semiotic ethnography is introduced into the field of young children’s techno-literacies. It is illustrated how a social semiotic approach allows for a more detailed analysis of the semiotic resources, whereas ethnographic data are necessary for an understanding of how such resources are put to use.

    Abstract [sv]

The materiality of discourses and the semiotics of materials: A social perspective on the meaning potentials of written texts and furniture2011In: Semiotica, ISSN 0037-1998, E-ISSN 1613-3692, Vol. 187, no 1-4, p. 141-165Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Based on two studies of different meaning-making phenomena, post-it notes and furniture, this paper highlights the role of materiality in everyday semiosis. A perspective on the semiotics of material artifacts is adopted, in which the “social” in combination with the specific affordances of materials are crucial for meaning-making. Partially in opposition to a Saussurean view of the semiotic sign, it is argued that materiality in itself contributes to meaning-making, through discourses and activity types. This paper contributes to the theoretical and the methodological dialogue between social semiotics and other approaches in the wider field of semiotic research.

Legitimation of value practices, value texts, and core values at public authorities2019In: Discourse & Communication, ISSN 1750-4813, E-ISSN 1750-4821, Vol. 13, no 4, p. 398-414Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

A large number of Swedish public authorities produce ‘platform of values’ texts that present core values. This article presents a study of how such texts and practices, including the core values they revolve around, are legitimized. Using Van Leeuwen’s legitimation framework, three different data sets are analysed: 47 ‘platform of values’ texts, a focus group discussion with seven senior HR officers, and a quantitative questionnaire study answered by civil servants at three public authorities. The analysis shows how the existence of ‘platform of values’ texts and practices is legitimized through rationalizations, above all by describing the texts as concrete means for reaching specific ends and, with regard to the choice of core values, through a custom-conformity type of authority. Thus, this article addresses discursive transformations of contemporary organizations with a particular focus on available discursive space for critical thinking in the wake of New Public Management and related developments.

Semiotic vagueness as a tool for goal fulfilment: ‘Platforms of values’ in Swedish public administration2021In: Journal of Applied Linguistics and Professional Practice, ISSN 2040-3658, E-ISSN 2040-3666, Vol. 16, no 1, p. 5-28Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Over the past 15 years, ‘platform of values’ texts presenting core values have become common in most Swedish public authorities. This article presents a study of how this genre is understood and used in professional practices. The aim is to show how semiotic vagueness in such texts serves a number of previously under-researched purposes in public organizations, including, rather paradoxically, concrete goal achievement. The framework of critical genre analysis enables the analytical process to move from text to practice, and further to the superordinate level of professional culture. Three different data sets are analysed: 47 ‘platform of values’ texts; a focus group discussion with seven senior civil servants/managers; and a quantitative questionnaire study answered by civil servants from three public authorities. The findings suggest that vagueness serves as a means to exercise managerial control through the promotion of interpretative work and continuous, identity-related dialogues on value related issues. The article argues that even though such uses of the ‘platform of values’ genre may be functional in neo-bureaucratic organizations, it is also problematic when semiotic vagueness is used as a tool for concrete actions such as internal promotions.

Anslagstavlan – en vägvisare till ny kunskap?2017Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Feeling safe while being surveilled: The spatial semiotics of affect at international airports2023In: Social Semiotics, ISSN 1035-0330, E-ISSN 1470-1219, Vol. 33, no 1, p. 209-231Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Departing from Lefebvre’s work on the social production of space, this paper explores the intersection between perceived and lived space from the perspective of spatial discourse analysis. Empirically, the paper studies how the spatiality of international airports performs affective discursive work and establishes prerequisites for air travelers’ feelings of being “in control” and “excited” vs. feelings of being “controlled” and “surveilled”. The concept of binding is applied in order to understand how affect is spatially afforded at Stockholm Arlanda Airport and Vienna International Airport. The analysis reveals that alternations between bound and unbound spaces construe the airports as distinctly ideological sites with different affective potentials. Accordingly, this article adds to the understanding of how airport atmospheres are construed by means of spatial resources such as the height, depth, and shape of walls and ceilings and by the transparency and opaqueness of the built material, as well as by more dynamic elements such as carpets, colors, signage, and retractable belt barriers.
