    Abstract [en]

“Merely a surplus of life” A biography on Frida Stéenhoff (1865–1945)

Frida Stéenhoff was a playwriter and an intellectual that had a great deal of attention paid to her in the early 20th century Sweden. She was a controversial person that took up issues that were taboo within the women’s movement as well as in public life as a whole. In 1903 she introduced the concept of feminism in the Swedish debate. By focusing on love and sexuality she challenged the intellectuals of that period in questions concerning human thought and ethics, on stage and in public debate. As with many writers, not least women, she was gradually forgotten. In recent years though her ideas as well as her plays have received renewed interest. The ambition of the book is to understand her as a person, her choices in life, her literary work and public activities, but also to put her in a literary and political context. Why did this daughter of a priest, grown up in a strict religious environment, choose this controversial path and how come she stood by her ideas despite a lot of resistance and personal inconvenience? These are some of the important questions posed. By using Frida Stéenhoff as a prism interesting perspectives also opens up on the relationship between art and politics and between men and women in the transformative time of the early 20th century. A dialogue becomes visible that was a part of but also challenged the story of modernity that was being developed at the time. The book has a narrative form and is directed by an aim to let Frida Stéenhoff speak for her self.

ジェンダー間の平等と福祉国家:20 世紀初頭スウェーデンにおける 婚姻法をめぐる議論エーレブロー大学(Gender Equality and the Welfare State. Debates on Marriage Law reform in Sweden at the Beginning of the 20th Century)2013In: Discussion paper series, Center for International Research on the Japanese Economy, Tokyo universityArticle, review/survey (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In the beginning of the 20th century marriage legislation was reformed in all the Nordic countries. Male privileges were abolished and equality was declared. Marriage was constructed as a union between two independent individuals that could be dissolved if both wanted to. It was not until the 1960s that a similar legislation was beginning to take shape in the rest of Europe. The article starts by looking into this common Nordic marriage law reform but focus later on the Swedish reform processes and debates. The analysis is guided by three main questions: why did the reform come about, which meaning/meanings were given to the concept of equality in the debates and which role did women’s organisation play in the process. The paper starts with putting the question of marriage in a wider context, discussing the reform in relation to the specific Nordic path towards a modern society. The following analysis of the Swedish debates shows that the question of marriage was closely interwoven with other contemporary political debates around social conditions, population policy, and eugenics. Establishing equality between husband and wife was one important aim behind the reform, but this aim was combined with, or even seen as a prerequisite for another, namely to strengthen the family as an institution. One of the most complex questions was how to give married women who had no property or income of their own a more free and independent position. How to reach equality in a society characterized by gender difference? This was a central and difficult question for the women’s organisations. Their principal approach to women’s emancipation differed, but when it came to marriage reform they cooperated to influence the new legislation. In the final analysis women’s organisations understandings of equality is discussed in relation to how the concept was approached in the general political debate. One of the central conclusions is that it is necessary to put concepts like equality and feminism in its historical context and another that this Swedish and Nordic marriage legislation was as much about women’s rights as about the well of the nation.

    Abstract [en]

Between 1909 and 1929, the Marriage Acts were thoroughly reformed in all Nordic countries. These laws enhanced women's individual rights and ended a husband's legal power over his wife. Gender equality—though admittedly based on gender difference—emerged earlier in the Nordic countries than elsewhere in Europe. Secondly, the formation of marriage was reformed. Relationships by blood and marriage were no longer marriage impediments to the same degree as formerly. On the other hand, the minimum age of marriage for women was raised and new medical impediments were introduced. Thirdly, divorce was liberalised and no‐fault divorce was accepted, decades before European nations such as Great Britain, France, Italy and Germany. It is thus justified to talk about the Nordic Model of Marriage. The article focuses on the characteristics of the legislation and of the reform process itself, which included lawyers and politicians, as well as women activists and physicians. It discusses why the Nordic countries took an early lead in adopting marriage law reforms.
