    Abstract [en]

    Literary studies often encounter writers whose output includes both literature and propaganda. The response may be to avoid ideologically tainted writers, or to separate the work from its creator. I rather seek to explore how various forms of expression relate to each other in the work of an artist who is active both as a fascist propagandist, ideologue and musician: Varg Vikernes, the individual behind Burzum.

    I take Bataille’s solar economy as my theoretical framework and situate myself within a field of studies that is attracted to fascist culture without adhering to a fascist ideology. First, I sketch out the relationship between fascism, literature and the marketplace of ideas. Then, I explore the relationship between the politics of Vikernes and the music of Burzum with a particular focus on Reflections on European Mythology and Polytheism (2015) and Belus (2010). I conclude that while both express the creator’s worldview, they also demonstrate how this worldview may be channeled into very different outputs.

    Abstract [en]

    The article focuses on how violence against animals is represented in video games. Instead of studying the most outrageous visual representations, howev-er, it focuses on the less conspicuous aspects of animal violence manifested in the hunting mechanics of open world games. Taking a rhetorical approach, it considers the ideological functions implied by the procedural gameplay of the hunting element. The article addresses four main topics: how games represent the relationship between hunting, killing and crafting; construct implicit distinctions between human and non-human animals; separate species into juridical and ethical categories associated with different values; and deal with the algorithmic nature of representations of wildlife and extinction. Among the games discussed are Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption (2010), and Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed III (2012) and Far Cry 3 (2012).

    Abstract [en]

    The article discusses literary and scientific discourse in relation to plant cognition. I argue that one purpose of literature is to let humans make meaning out of their environment. My focus is not on literature as fiction, or any a priori faculty of counterfactual construction. Rather, I consider literature as the inspired response to external phenomena. In this aspect, literature springs from outside; and this it shares with scientific explanation. But where science lays bare the mechanical laws of the universe, literature operates with compelling narratives of individual wills. I further suggest that the literary mode is specifically suited for envisioning non-human life. Poetic thought is considered as a mode of human cognition that, by suspending the distance between human and world, allows us to think modes of non-human cognition. In literature, we are able to represent those affects we share with other forms of biological life. My focus is on two literary representations of plant life and the blending of life forms in stories where people turn into plants. I start by considering how a few botanists have taken the literary mode as a negative point of departure for their attempts to explain plant behavior. Then, I muster two theoretical accounts in order to read two such stories. Henri and Henriette Frankfort’s description of mythopoeic thought is used as the starting point for an interpretation of Ovid’s take on the myth of Echo and Narcissus; and Roger Caillois’ “comparative biology” for a reading of Johan Borgen’s short story “Kaprifolium”.

    The article focuses on the underlying structures evaluating acts of violence against different bodies in games. Taking the hunting mechanics of open-world games as its point of discussion, it looks at how game design manifests procedural arguments on the ideological aspects of animal violence.

    Whereas there are instances of explicit violence in these games, the article argues that the explicitness of such depictions serves to emphasize the “messiness” of producing animal goods, thus impeding the “carnist” ideological view of meat as pure commodity. By considering how games distinguish humans from animals, it looks at what violent acts are rendered acceptable or unacceptable, and notes distinctions between what bodies are protected by, or exempt from, moral and legal rights.

    Finally, the article considers how the algorithmic nature of spawning makes digital animals immune to extinction. Interestingly enough, the article nevertheless notices how a game may intentionally diverge from this logic in order to defamiliarize its established logic.

    Among the games discussed are Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption (2010), and Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed III (2012) and Far Cry 3 (2012).

    The article examines the concept of focus and perspective in drama, a genre traditionally uncared for by narrative theory. The topic is treated in a twofold manner. The first part of the paper discusses examples from classical, fin de siècle and modernist dramatic texts using subjectivity on the discursive level, as representational projections of figural perception and consciousness. The second part treats subjectivity on the structural level of narrative projects. By revising the Greimasian actantial model the author tries to define dramatic narrative in terms of power, as the dialectic between hierarchical relations of centrality and marginality, something which becomes manifest in the genre’s conventional list of dramatis personae.

    Abstract [en]

    The thesis examines the five plays published by August Strindberg under the label of Chamber Plays: Stormy Weather, The Burned Lot, The Ghost Sonata, The Pelican (all 1907), and The Black Glove (1909). It takes its point of departure in a particular aspect of Strindberg’s way of writing as he actually describes it himself: during the act of deliberate composing, a productive fever tends to emerge bringing an element of chance to the work. The thesis defines the effect produced by this “fever” as the tension generated between, on the one hand, structure or form, and, on the other hand, style or writing. These concepts are associated with a tradition, primarily in French literary theory, which pays attention to what is described as a friction between the general linguistic aspect of literature (genres, recurring and recognizable patterns) and the individual aspect (the peculiar and idiosyncratic style of an author embodied in his material habitus). Thus the ambiguity found in the thesis’ title: the “mold” alludes partly to the stereotypes or matrices of language, partly to the “fungi” that, according to Strindberg, could be considered an adequate image for writing; the poetic work, says Strindberg, grows like mold from the author’s brain.

    Theoretical questions, primarily of a formal and interpretational nature, are continuously discussed since one of the main points is that the Strindbergian way of writing restricts what kind of interpretation may be given his works. The eventual contrast between form and interpretation is, furthermore, related to a general theme developed throughout the Chamber Plays concerning the meaning of life.

    It is stressed that the five plays show distinct formal and thematic differences; thus, a separate chapter is dedicated to each of them. The chapter on Stormy Weather examines the structural use of focus and the hierarchy of character-functions related to the centering on a protagonist. The Burned Lot is discussed from the concept of a ruin to describe how a multitude of conflicting forms come together to produce a fragmentary result. The Ghost Sonata is described in terms of simulation: while Strindberg alludes to certain dramatic patterns, he also distorts them whereby new effects are created. The chapter on The Pelican explores the temporal flow of the play and how it relates to writing. The thesis ends with a discussion of The Black Glove and its relation to the preceding Chamber Plays and also to the Strindbergian oeuvre. The concept of weed is used to distinguish a recurring element in Strindberg’s work as well as in his worldview.

    Throughout the thesis, the discussion is consistently related to previous studies and commentaries on the plays.
