    Abstract [en]

The Probation Services, which is part of the Swedish Prison and Probation Services, is responsible for supervising the conditionally released and probation sentences. The purpose of this Essay in Social Work is to study probation officers dual role as a control and support function and studied from a power perspective. Previous research and literature has shown no universal definition of support, control and power, when these concepts are interpreted differently. Probation officers have a dual mission as both support and control their clients. We have conducted a qualitative study in which we performed six semi-structured interviews with three female and three male probation officers. Respondents in the study describe that control can be considered as several different things in their work, the same as support. Respondents have capacity, resources, knowledge and laws to use when they control and support their clients. Respondents argue that it is not possible to separate control and support in their work, which also revealed by the analysis. Depending on what perspective you take, an act seen as help may in a different perspective be seen as control. The concepts of control and support are defined differently by different authors, this makes it difficult to separate them. The conclusion of this study is that control and support ever-present probation officers work. It´s unable to separate these concepts and therefore can´t a definition of control and support be made, of the probation officers work. We also find that the probation officer has power. Power takes the expression in the probation officers resources and capacity, knowledge, laws and regulations and sanctions ability.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to research how social workers manage to follow up cases with children placed in foster homes, their guardians and the foster homes. To meet this purpose a qualitative method has been used. The study is founded upon eight different interviews. Four with social workers who deal with children exclusively and four with social workers who deal with foster homes, within eight different districts/municipalities. Earlier research has shown shortcomings in the way social welfare follow up cases with children placed in foster homes, the guardians and the foster home. The government has introduced regulations in chapter 5, first section of the Swedish security law to stress the responsibilities that the social welfare committee has during an ongoing foster care placement. The background literature included in this study describes what possibilities social workers have in their work situation, and helps to gain a deeper understanding of the context within the organization. It also includes the ongoing discussion about social workers’ knowledge of how to follow up cases in a correct way. The interviews that this study is founded upon shows that the social workers meet the regulations, that the law prescribes for this area, of varying degree. To follow up cases in a correct way is not prioritized in the organization of the social welfare administrations. The respondents in this study do not believe that they have enough knowledge and have difficulties seeing what possibilities their work situation gives them when it comes to following up cases.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Previous research suggests that there are gaps in knowledge about and stereotypes of female clients in correctional treatment, which also affects how they work with female clients. In this study will, therefore, probation officers descriptions of female clients' problems, needs and resources examined. In the study it will also examine whether these descriptions can be considered as gender-stereotyped. To determine this, semi structured interviews were made with probation officers in one specific probation office in Sweden. The respondents’ answers have been thematically analyzed based on gender theory and previous research to see how gender is constructed in the work with female clients, and if gender stereotypes are present. The results show that some gender stereotyped views of female clients are to be found within the probation service, however, we can find more tendency to question and discuss this among the respondents compared to what previous research has shown.

"They were like ‘it’s only ten crowns’, but I still couldn’t afford it": En integrativ forskningsöversikt om barns ekonomiska och sociala utsatthet i ett konsumtionssamhälle2016Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Drogmissbruk och kriminalitet: Hönan eller ägget?2006Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study concerns the relationship between drug use and criminal behaviour among drug using male youths that are in treatment, or have been treated for drug use and/or criminal behaviour, in an institution in Sweden. The purpose was to examine their life story concerning drug use and criminal behaviour. Within a qualitative research approach, interviews have been performed with four male youths between 16 and 20 years old. Four models have been used as theoretical reference points; 1) drug use causes crime, 2) crime causes drug use, 3) the reciprocal model and 4) the common cause model. The result shows that none of these models can exclusively explain the relation between drug use and criminal behaviour among the youths in this study. We have found the strongest support for the fourth model; the common cause model, by the material provided by the youths. The result also agrees with some of the previous research on the relationship between drug use and criminal behaviour.

    Abstract [en]

Diagnose is a way for society to describe and limit what is normal and socially acceptable. Diagnosis is also a social construction that often has a negative impact. People put labels on those with a diagnose and it is usually in a negative way and does not accept the deviant behavior that explains the diagnose. The purpose of this essay is to find out how adults with a diagnose experience benefits and cons of their diagnose. With the qualitative method has a semi-structured interviews been done. Three people have participated in the study and shared their experience about their neuropsychiatric diagnose. All three have a ADHD problem, one person have also been diagnose with Asperger. The result demonstrate how they feel about their diagnose and show that the belive it is better to be diagnose, than to live in uncertainty about what it is that make them behave in a certain way. One of the interviewed said "I know many who are ashamed that they have their diagnose and I also know who take advantage of their situation too, and that I don’t like. For a diagnose is a diagnose. It is a disability bit it’s about what you make of it"’

    Abstract [en]

In recent years, there has been a sharp increase in the number of unaccompanied refugee children seeking asylum in Sweden. The majority of the unaccompanied youths are placed in group-homes, since the Swedish municipalities have the same responsibilities to care for these children as those born in Sweden. The present study aims to investigate, through a casestudy, if a specific group-home for unaccompanied refugee children is designed to promote the unaccompanied refugee childrens development and integration into society. Furthermore, the study aims to identify opportunities and barriers in the work with the residents development and integration into society. The study is based on a qualitative approach where eleven semi-structured interviews were conducted with staff, coordinator and head of unit at a group home for unaccompanied refugee children. The results show that the unaccompanied refugee children who mostly come from war-torn countries have very individual and extensive needs regarding crisis, integration, security and care. To make the group-home stay meaningful for the unaccompanied children, it requires that the organization and staff-group are able to meet the children's needs. Based on previous research and the theoretical framework of interpretation used in the study, the results show that staff employed within group-homes for unaccompanied refugee children should have expertise in crisis management, culture and are able to understand the importance of not generalizing needs of help and support of the children. The staff at the studied group-home have different work experience which has led to a lack of consensus within the staff. Furthermore, the results of the study show that there are difficulties related to the work at the group-home due to its localization and the varying individual conditions among the children. Also, the staff's knowledge is something that affect how these unaccompanied children's needs are met at a group-home.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate whether the employability of newly graduated social workers is affected by the Supervised Practical Work Experience performed during the educational program. Four main questions were developed in order to establish an educated and concise theory: Does the newly graduated social worker’s choice of a specific Supervised Practical Work Experience affect their employability? Does the structure of the Supervised Practical Work Experience affect newly graduated social worker’s employability? What specific skills do employers within social work consider important for their organization? Is there a difference in how the representatives of various organizations within social work answer the aforementioned questions? The study was conducted through six qualitative semi-structured interviews. The people being interviewed work either as employers or recruiters in organizations from different areas within social work. Theories concerning organization and symbolic interactions were used during the analysis of the results. The results show that there is no direct link between newly graduated social worker’s employability and the Supervised Practical Work Experience performed during the educational program. However, there are indications that show that if the applicant has done their Supervised Practical Work Experience at the specific department that is advertising vacancies, then it can have a positive impact on employment opportunities at the given agency. There are differences between the participants in the study when it comes to what skills and experiences that are being highly valued.

Importance of social support for hard-of-hearing students in pursuing their "educational careers"2006In: Scandinavian Journal of Disability Research, ISSN 1501-7419, E-ISSN 1745-3011, Vol. 8, no 4, p. 298-316Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The aim was to describe different processes in what is termed the “educational career” of hard-of-hearing students. The data comprises narratives from 30 hard-of-hearing former students representing four groups: students from a special school who continued to university education or to employment; students from ordinary schools who continued to university education or to employment. The results indicate that support within the educational experience is of great importance and the social support provided by parents is of crucial importance for a student's educational trajectory or career. This support, in combination with an adjusted school environment, seems to greatly diminish the importance of the hearing impairment. The conclusion is that hard-of-hearing students should not necessarily choose a special school just because of the impairment itself. When the needs of these students are met, there seem to be more accentuated mechanisms in ordinary educational settings than in special schools that promote post-secondary education.

"Barnets intresse går före föräldrarnas" Konstruktionen av barnets bästa vid vårdnadstvist2016Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Main purpose is to clarify the client's problem, see the effort need, have a global perspective and to create the active participation of the client. The conditions for the use of assessment instruments are in the form of training and support from the organization, but the absence still time, knowledge and equipment to use them fully. The government intends to evidence-based practice is to create an evidence-based knowledge. Although this study shows that the evaluation and statistics are two areas in the existing management of the assessment instrument.

    Abstract [en]

Knowledge about people with intellectual disability (ID) and their connections to the labor market is scarce. The aim of this study was to describe and analyze the entry into and representation in the Swedish labor market for people with ID, discussed with a special focus on the gender perspective. This study included 2,745 individuals (30% women and 70% men) who graduated from Swedish upper secondary schools for pupils with intellectual disability (USSID) in the 2000s, and who were defined as employees in 2011. Graduation data from 2001 to 2011 were analyzed in relation to employment data from 2011 and adjusted for gender, graduation year, and educational program. Results show that men who attended a national USSID program and graduated between 2001 and 2006 were the most likely group to have a job. The authors conclude that the gender differences in the Swedish labor market are more clearly pronounced among women and men with ID in relation to employment rate, wage levels, and professions than in the general population. Education, welfare-services, and interventions specifically targeted to meet the needs of people with ID have to develop in more gender-sensitive ways.
