The Appearance of Evaluation Models in Psychiatry: Some Swedish Examples2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In recent years the knowledge and the practices in the field of evaluation have been accumulated and different evaluation models are being discussed in the literature. There are a variety of evaluation models which describe how to conduct a particular type of evaluation. As a human service organization, psychiatry has a particular organizational structure. Seeking to enhance understanding of evaluation models in psychiatry is a need to be covered. To understand the evaluation activity in psychiatry and to question a suitable evaluation model are the aims of this study. The method of this study is a theoretical analysis. By probing into analysing of some examples of evaluation in Swedish psychiatry, a number of core criteria are highlighted. As the results, it comes up that the evaluation activity in psychiatry seems to be “top-down” which is informative and traditional way. Despite evaluation tradition had been highly recognised in psychiatry, the evaluation model is still a question in the field. Based on implications, it emerges three variables in the context of evaluation in psychiatry; facts, values and participation of different actors. By containing these three variables in its context, stakeholder evaluation model seem to be suitable model in psychiatry. This article enables a theoretical ground for the appearance of evaluation in psychiatry and gives implications in regard to stakeholder model as an appropriate evaluation model in psychiatry for future studies.

Har personer med ADHD en förhöjd prevalens av otrygg anknytning i jämförelse med normalbefolkningen?: En undersökning av anknytningsstilar i en population av ADHD2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study aims is to explore if people diagnosed with ADHD show a higher frequency of insecure attachment (according to the test ASQ) than the normal population. The method used is an internet-based self report survey; Attachment Style Qeustionnaire, ASQ, which is a test that measures different categories of relational patterns based on attachment theory. The test results indicate a high frequency of insecure attachment scores (95%) in the measured sample. Regarding limitations in validity using only one method of measuring, and ASQ beeing a test for measuring relational patterns, the study only claim to present results of ”relational styles” in the AD/HD sample.

Hur producerar texter sanning?: En diskursanalys av texter inom debatten om substitutionsbehandling.2010Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Trovärdighetsbedömningen av muntliga utsagor i brottmålsprocessen2010Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In some criminal cases, the only existing evidence is the verbal statement of a witness or the plaintiff. The typical example is an alleged rape where victim and perpetrator have had some kind of relation, and their records of the incident differ. In these cases, the assessment of the value of the evidence drawn from the plaintiff's story is of crucial importance. On the one hand, a false positive judgment means that a person is wrongly convicted, on the other hand, a failure to correctly identify a truthful claim of rape means that a victim of a severe crime is left without judicial remedy. That the prosecutor must prove that the crime is committed by the defendant without reasonable doubt, means that there is much more chance of a failure to convict guilty felons, than of the opposite.

In the essay, the rules of criminal procedure directed at the evaluation of the verbal statement are identified and critically evaluated from the perspective of how they may or may not facilitate the judgment of a verbal statement presented before the court, either in person, or through other media such as video. Current psychological research on people's ability to discern truth from lie, from the viewpoint of the sender as well as the judge, is described.

The essay shows that the rules of procedure, those that regulate the allowing of evidence, as well as those that guarantee the parties’ fair trial, and rules directed at the legal procedure before the court may facilitate as well as improve the assessment of credibility of a verbal statement. However, the instruments that the judges use to value the truthfulness in a statement has received mixed support in the psychological research, which in turn tends to be performed in an artificial environment foreign to the legal procedure, and using students rather than professionals as research subjects. Attributes inherent to the judge may influence his or her evaluation of the credibility of a statement.

Undergrupper av social ångest i relation till depressiva symtom och livstillfredsställelse hos unga vuxna: En tvärsnittsstudie2010Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Ljusnarsbergs municipality has resolved the statutory task of collaboration, in the case of children who do not get their needs met, with the working model Familjeringen – a networking where education and social service is cooperating. The municipality has requested the evaluation. The aim of this evaluation is to clarify Familjeringen as an interaction model and the perception of users, namely the families, schools and social services. Another aim is to provide possible suggestion for improvements to Familjeringens continuation. Networking and collaboration is the theoretical frame of reference for this evaluation.

Program theory was used as an evaluation model with support from qualitative content analysis, where interview material from the participants and officials has been categorized.

The results and analysis show that there are different expectations for Familjeringen, which gave reflections about if the goals are reasonably addressed in relation to the model´s size and working process. It may be concluded that the leadership issue is not clear. Attendees will include an experience that they felt involved in the process and the benefits of network and its resources have been clarified.

The participant’s view is that Familjeringen is a useful model, however, it need to be adapted to each family and to be followed-up better. Collaboration works, but need more clarity, especially with respect to the allocation of responsibilities. Suggestions for improvements were discussed, such as an update of the Familjeringens governing documents, to be adapted to existing activities.

Sexköpslagen: en fortsatt orättvisa?2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Predictors and Outcomes of Persistent or Age-Limited Registered Criminal Behavior: A 30-Year Longitudinal Study of a Swedish Urban Population2009In: Aggressive Behavior, ISSN 0096-140X, E-ISSN 1098-2337, Vol. 35, no 2, p. 164-178Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study uses data from the longitudinal research program Individual Development and Adaptation, where an entire school-grade cohort of children in a middle-size Swedish city (n approximately 1.300) has been followed from ages 10 to 43 and 48 for women and men, respectively. Our findings indicate that the patterns of offending across the life-course differ between genders, where males seem to initiate their offending earlier than females. Further, there are very few women on a persistent offending-trajectory. Focusing on precursors to as well as consequences of offending as indexed in official registers, our results indicate that individuals in the persistent offender group have the most pronounced adjustment problems in school- as well as in middle age. Individual characteristics and behaviors (e.g., aggression, hyperactivity, antisocial behavior) vary systematically between individuals with different developmental offending patterns. The combination of an unstable upbringing and own antisocial behavior seems to be especially predictive for criminality. For persistent offenders, the prevalence of alcohol and psychiatric problems at adult age is high for males and extremely high for females (nine out of ten and six out of ten for each of the two problem types for females). Further, the importance for adjustment of the two-dimensional variation in the number of crimes committed during adolescence and adult age seems to have been surprisingly well captured by the "crude" division into the four offender groups that were used.

Types and continua in developmental psychopathology: Problem behaviors in school and their relationship to later antisocial behavior2009In: Development and psychopathology (Print), ISSN 0954-5794, E-ISSN 1469-2198, Vol. 21, no 3, p. 975-992Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In the study of developmental psychopathology a dimensional, variable-oriented approach dominates over a typological approach. With the person-oriented research paradigm providing the metatheoretical framework, pros and cons of these two approaches are discussed, and it is pointed to different methodological realizations of the typological approach, and to the contexts where they might be appropriate. It is also pointed out that the two important and underused concepts of equifinality and multifinality with advantage can be incorporated in a person-oriented approach. An empirical example is given of the study of the structure of early adolescent problem behaviors and their relationship to later criminality where dimensional as well as typological analyses are carried out. The usefulness of the typological approach in studying the development and early manifestations of the personality disorder psychopathy is also discussed. It is concluded that the usefulness of a typological approach appears to be underestimated.

Bedömning av unga med eller i riskzonen för normbrytande beteende: En studie av ESTER-bedömnings interbedömarreliabilitet2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Youths with normbreaking behavior is at higher risk for a negative development. To prevent this, there is a need for reliable assessments that can identify risk and need for youths with, or at risk for normbreaking behavior. This is the purpose of ESTER-assessment. This study evaluated the inter-rater reliability of two different scales in ESTER-assessment. Two independent judges conducted ESTER-assessment on case files of 30 institutionalized girls, aged 15-20 years. The results revealed poor to excellent agreement and few cases of total disagreements. The two different scales showed a minimal difference. In further research of the inter-rater reliability of ESTER-assessment there is a need for testing the two scales separately and to include interviews as a source of information.

Obehöriga transaktioner med betalningsinstrument2010Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Jag undersökte också hur den nya lagen var utformad och vilka eventuella problem som skulle kunna uppstå i och med den. Den nya lagen tillkom för att dels åtgärda de problem som fanns med den äldre 34 § konsumentkreditlagen, dels för att implementera delar av ett EU-direktiv, 2007/64/EG. Trots att jag anser att den nya lagen kommer att förbättra rättsläget för konsumenterna återfinns det också problem med densamma. De problem jag har identifierat gäller;

    - avsaknaden av retroaktivitet för den nya lagen,

    - införandet av det för den svenska rätten helt nya begreppet särskilt klandervärt,

    - motiveringen till införandet av till exempel en självrisk vid obehöriga transaktioner med betalningsinstrumentet och

    - den avsaknad av underlag för hur mycket av den nya lagen som konsumenten kommer att känna till ställd mot viljan hos lagstiftaren att införa handlingsdirigerande lagstiftning.

Terapin, terapeuten eller terrängen?: En forskningssammanställning kring olika faktorers betydelse i behandlingssituationen2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This research summary studies drug treatment and which factors, apart from the basic method of treatment, that influence the outcome. The surrounding factors which have been studied are the relationship between the therapist and the client and also the treatment environment. Beyond that, the study examines whether these factors are observed in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, the Twelve Step Program and in national governing documents such as guidelines and laws. The study shows that current research is aware that more factors than the treatment method affect the treatment situation. Some researchers and practitioners give more importance to these factors than others. Most result shows that the literature on both Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and the Twelve Step Program includes the relationship between therapist and patient as part of the treatment. A study of two treatment centers shows that the treatment environment even there was seen as a contributing factor in the two treatment methods. Finally the study discusses whether existing knowledge about these factors could improve the Swedish addiction treatment if they were given more room.

    Abstract [en]

Becoming an adoptive parent is not always easy. There are positive and negative factors affecting the parent’s experience. The aim of this study is to examine being an adoptive parent to an internationally adopted child based on association, parenthood and ethnic belonging. Frame of interpretation consists of attachment and separations, parenthood and family and ethnic origin and belonging. In order to fulfil the purpose of the study qualitative interviews were made. The selection consisted of six adoptive families that were separately interviewed, one occasion each. The result indicated that some families did not experience any specific difficulties in their parenting whereas other families did. The experiences differed between those who had adopted an older child and those who had adopted a younger child. Association was considered a long and time consuming process. The parents did not consider it to be anything special about being and adoptive parent but they mentioned that the child at the homecoming displayed symptoms from having gone through an adoption. The reaction from the surroundings had not affected the families to any extent worth mentioning but they still expressed that the child’s appearance was important as they wished the child to be similar looking. The conclusion is therefore that it is something special about being an adoptive parent.

Selektiv Uppmärksamhet hos Personer med Insomni: En experimentell studie med bildbaserat Dot-probe task2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Cognitive models have suggested selective attention as a contributing factor of perpetuating insomnia. In this study the dot probe task was employed in an experiment in order to investigate whether the level of selective attention differentiates individuals with insomnia from a matched group of normal sleepers, and if any difference exist, the nature of such selective attention. Also, the relation of selective attention to anxiety and depression was investigated. The results show that the groups differ significantly on selective attention, and that neither anxiety nor depression can account for these differences. The results specifically show that the selective attention consists of difficulty in disengaging from threat rather than heightened vigilance to threat. These findings may implicate the clinical view on insomnia treatment.

    Abstract [en]

Vaginismus is a sexual problem that occurs in women. In previous evaluated studies it has been regarded as a problem belonging to the woman. The field of science is limited and the knowledge about the role of couple interaction for the maintaining factors of the problem and couple satisfaction is unknown. The aim of the study was to design a couple treatment where the communication skill validation, is learned, investigate if there where an interest for participating, and evaluate if treatment affect relationship satisfaction and individual well-being. The study has a single-subject design where one couple completed the treatment. The result shows that there was a limited interest for participating and no visible effect of the intervention. Validation is an unexplored intervention that needs to be evaluated further in the area of couple treatments. To offer couple treatment for couples where the woman has vaginismus is challenging.
