Externalising and internalising problem behaviour among Swedish adolescent boys and girls2015In: International Journal of Social Welfare, ISSN 1369-6866, E-ISSN 1468-2397, Vol. 24, no 2, p. 182-192Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

We examined the occurrence and coexistence of externalising and internalising problem behaviour among Swedish boys and girls, and investigated whether there are differences in the accumulation of problems among adolescents with different behavioural, demographic and social characteristics. The results are discussed in the context of self-salience schemas. The source material comprised all ninth grade pupils in a province in central Sweden in 2008 (N = 3,095). First, girls were found to be more prone to experience internalising problem behaviour, whereas no sex differences were found regarding externalising problem behaviour. Second, multidimensional scaling maps indicated that, compared with boys, self-esteem and the PsychoSomatic Problem (PSP) scale among girls more closely indicated externalising problem behaviour components, whereas anxiety was situated far from the other externalising problem behaviour indicators. Finally, linear regression analyses indicated family type as the primary explanatory background factor for externalising problem behaviour and economic hardship as the primary explanatory background factor for internalising problem behaviour.

Patterns of Psycho-Social Distress Among Ageing Swedes2015In: Journal of Population Ageing, ISSN 1874-7884, E-ISSN 1874-7876, Vol. 8, no 4, p. 261-278Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper examines psycho-social distress among middle-aged and elderly Swedes. We analysed data on 3221 individuals who were 55 to 99 years old. Based on a latent class analysis, we identified four latent classes. Two classes were associated with higher levels of psycho-social problem accumulation. The class with the lowest level of problem accumulation contained the greatest number of individuals, whereas the classes with the highest level of psycho-social distress contained the least number of individuals. The analysis showed that being a man, being married, being a native Swede, or having several hobbies was associated with a low likelihood of belonging to a latent class that was characterised by psycho-social distress. Moreover, being a woman, being between 55 and 65 years of age, or being a widow was associated with a high likelihood of belonging to a latent class that was characterised by the highest levels of problem accumulation.

Adolescents' Engagement in Ethnic Harassment: Prejudiced Beliefs in Social Networks and Classroom Ethnic Diversity2018In: Journal of Youth and Adolescence, ISSN 0047-2891, E-ISSN 1573-6601, Vol. 47, no 6, p. 1151-1163Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Research on ethnic victimization to date has done little to identify the reasons why adolescents victimize their peers due to their ethnic background. To address this limitation, we examined: (1) the extent to which prejudiced attitudes within adolescents' close and larger social networks determine their engagement in ethnic harassment, and (2) the extent to which classroom ethnic diversity plays a role in any such link. Our sample included 902 Swedish adolescents (M age  = 14.40, SD = .95; 50.3% girls). We found that Swedish adolescents who held negative attitudes toward immigrants or who were surrounded by prejudiced peers were more likely to be involved in ethnic harassment, particularly in classrooms with high ethnic diversity. Adolescents in classrooms with a high anti-immigrant climate were more likely to harass their immigrant peers. These findings suggest that prejudiced beliefs in youth social networks put young people at risk of engaging in ethnic harassment, particularly in ethnically diverse classrooms.

The Appearance of Evaluation Models in Psychiatry: Some Swedish Examples2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In recent years the knowledge and the practices in the field of evaluation have been accumulated and different evaluation models are being discussed in the literature. There are a variety of evaluation models which describe how to conduct a particular type of evaluation. As a human service organization, psychiatry has a particular organizational structure. Seeking to enhance understanding of evaluation models in psychiatry is a need to be covered. To understand the evaluation activity in psychiatry and to question a suitable evaluation model are the aims of this study. The method of this study is a theoretical analysis. By probing into analysing of some examples of evaluation in Swedish psychiatry, a number of core criteria are highlighted. As the results, it comes up that the evaluation activity in psychiatry seems to be “top-down” which is informative and traditional way. Despite evaluation tradition had been highly recognised in psychiatry, the evaluation model is still a question in the field. Based on implications, it emerges three variables in the context of evaluation in psychiatry; facts, values and participation of different actors. By containing these three variables in its context, stakeholder evaluation model seem to be suitable model in psychiatry. This article enables a theoretical ground for the appearance of evaluation in psychiatry and gives implications in regard to stakeholder model as an appropriate evaluation model in psychiatry for future studies.

Kvinna i Afrika: – en studie om kvinnor som arbetar på SOS-barnbyar2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

An evaluation: how have the goals of “Vårdkedjeprojektet” been implemented at the treatment centre of Rällsögården

This evaluation was commissioned on behalf of the treatment centre of Rällsögården. The aim of this study is to evaluate how the goals of “Vårdkedjeprojektet” (VKP) have been implemented in the institutional care at the treatment centre of Rällsögården. This study was focused on the following questions: a) how is the function ”internal coordinator” experienced by staff at Rällsögården, b) in the function of internal coordinator what aspects are thought of as effective/non-effective concerning the cooperation with ”external coordinators” and contact with clients and staff, c) how is Vårdkedjeprojektet and its treatment approach “Community Reinforcement Approach” (CRA) experienced by coordinators, clients and staff and d) how well is the aftercare functioning for clients who have finished their treatment at Rällsögården, and still participate in VKP?

The choice of research method was triangulation; a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods. Data was collected through interviews with all the coordinators and clients and a questionnaire was distributed among the staff at Rällsögården. The result shows that the function internal coordinator is appreciated by the external coordinators as well as by staff at Rällsögården. The external coordinators and the internal coordinator find their cooperation as satisfying. However most of the clients experience the contact with the internal coordinator as not satisfying. The majority of the staff at Rällsögården would appreciate more participation from the internal coordinator in the daily treatment work at Rällsögården. A majority of the staff and none of the clients at the institution have knowledge of the significance of CRA. The clients in aftercare have knowledge of the method and they have had CRA-sessions. The two clients in aftercare have two different experiences of the aftercare and the contact with concerned authorities. One of the clients is satisfied with his aftercare and the contact with the internal coordinator and the other client is not satisfied.

In conclusion a majority of the respondents think that the positive aspects of VKP are the “over-all thinking” and the increased cooperation between social services and institutions. Another important aspect is the guaranteed six months aftercare.

Kompetensutveckling ur ett styrningsperspektiv: exemplet omsorgen2009In: Tidsskrift for Arbejdsliv, ISSN 1399-1442, Vol. 11, no 3, p. 62-77Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Ljusnarsbergs municipality has resolved the statutory task of collaboration, in the case of children who do not get their needs met, with the working model Familjeringen – a networking where education and social service is cooperating. The municipality has requested the evaluation. The aim of this evaluation is to clarify Familjeringen as an interaction model and the perception of users, namely the families, schools and social services. Another aim is to provide possible suggestion for improvements to Familjeringens continuation. Networking and collaboration is the theoretical frame of reference for this evaluation.

Program theory was used as an evaluation model with support from qualitative content analysis, where interview material from the participants and officials has been categorized.

The results and analysis show that there are different expectations for Familjeringen, which gave reflections about if the goals are reasonably addressed in relation to the model´s size and working process. It may be concluded that the leadership issue is not clear. Attendees will include an experience that they felt involved in the process and the benefits of network and its resources have been clarified.

The participant’s view is that Familjeringen is a useful model, however, it need to be adapted to each family and to be followed-up better. Collaboration works, but need more clarity, especially with respect to the allocation of responsibilities. Suggestions for improvements were discussed, such as an update of the Familjeringens governing documents, to be adapted to existing activities.

    Abstract [sv]

    Alliance and interventions

A study of how families have experienced open care treatment and the lasting effects of treatment.

    Abstract

In Sweden approximately 100,000 cases involving children are investigated annually by the social services office for individual and family services. The number of registered cases in the open care service programs has almost doubled since 1999, replacing traditional institutional care. As a result of the increase in the number of children, more knowledge is needed con-cerning the underlying issues and results from the open care service program. The purpose of this study is to investigate and clarify the open care service program of a medium-sized Swe-dish county, to explain changes that have take place as described by the families themselves and which positive changes remain after treatment. The study’s analysis sheds light on which premises should exist for positive treatment. Important elements such as therapeutic care al-liance and general treatment programs and which interventions directed towards conclusive risk and protective factors are addressed. Results show that factors such as intensity and avail-ability of open care service programs treatment are instrumental in reaching changes and that the majority of changes have persisted after concluded treatment. Results suggest that open care service programs could benefit by better informing about treatment’s before families decide on participating in treatment or not. Also results indicate that action plans and descrip-tion of objectives could be made more explicit to better attain therapeutic results. Results also show that the majority of families describe a favorable therapeutic alliance and their signific-ance to viable change. Results also corroborate the importance of intervention in the school environment on attaining positive effects.

Risk- och skyddsfaktorer vid depression hos barn, ungdomar och unga vuxna En integrativ forskningsöversikt2016Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Viktiga aspekter i

    Abstract [en]

The study aims to gain insight into how social workers perceive their psychosocial work environment and examine whether this effects the performance of their duties. The study mainly addresses the shortcomings of the psychosocial work environment of Social Services and the implications it entails for social workers health and wellbeing. The psychosocial work environment includes physical and psychological factors therefore the study's interpretive framework consists of organizational theoretical and social psychological concepts and previous research on the subject. We examined the organizational and social psychological connections to social workers perception of their work environment with a qualitative approach. The empirical data was collected through interviews with four social workers in a municipality in central Sweden using a semi-structured interview guide. The results led to the conclusions that challenge our preconceptions and gave us a nuanced perspective on social workers working conditions. The result of the study indicates that social service officials may not always be affected by adverse workplace conditions. Exceptions exist.

Socialarbetares status inom psykiatrisk vård - ett konstrueratfenomen?En diskursanalys2017Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Financial support and social welfare officers’ assessment

    - a comparative study about social welfare officers different assessment from a gender perspective

Authors: Maria Axelsson, Anna Bergström & Tina Surminen

    Tutor: Christian Kullberg

    Abstract

The purpose with this study is to deepen the knowledge about social welfare officers’ different evaluations of male and female clients’ need for assistance. The questions asked are: (i) what factors effects social welfare officers’ different evaluations of assistance based on gender, (ii) is there any differences in how social welfare officers’ value social network and work life depending of the clients gender, (iii) does social welfare officers’ investigate and work with the clients work- and family situation in similar extent, regardless of gender? The study has a comparative angle of approach and is built on qualitative interviews with social welfare officers’. The theoretical point of view is based on theories of genus and attribution. The research part is based on genus processes in social institutions. The results of the study indicates that the factors affecting different social welfare officers’ evaluations is that male and female clients’ backgrounds differs, for example the relation to the work market or psychological illness. Clients' ways to present their needs does not seem to differ between men and women. It differs between the sexes way to communicate their needs. The way clients communicate their needs seems to contribute to different assessments. The result shows differences in how individual social welfare officers’ value family and work life. Individual social welfare officers’ consider that the social network has greater importance for women than for men. Generally social welfare officers’ consider that they do not evaluate the working life differently regardless of gender. The result shows that individual social welfare officers’ investigate and work differently with the male and female clients’ working situation. Men seem to become questioned and checked to a greater extent than women. The social welfare officers’ shows a greater compassion for women in a vulnerable situation. The respondents consider themselves search and to work equivalently with the clients’ family situation. Further factors that can influence social welfare officers’ investigation and ways of work are a lack of specific research and theory of gender to underlie support assessments on. A lack of the above, interprets that respondents is unconscious about that their assessments can base on traditional gender standards.

Det sociala arbetet inom folkbildningen: en fallstudie i Örebro kommun.2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The case study investigates study association representatives’ perspectives on the activities of the popular education within the social sector in Örebro and why they are organized. It further investigates the cooperation and dialogue between the study associations and the municipality of Örebro regarding this activity. The study is based on critical realism. A questionnaire survey was conducted among all ten study associations in Örebro, combined with qualitative interviews with representatives from six of the active associations. Responses from both studies proofs that all of the study associations are active within the social sector. A significant part of the popular education activities organized by the associations can thus be referred to as social work. These activities are funded by governmental mains in accordance with “The regulation on state aid for popular education”. According to the association representatives there are gaps in the dialogue with the municipality of Örebro, which may be related to occurring changes at the structural level, between the civil society and the public sector. Society, earlier characterized by corporative structures, moves towards a more pluralistic state which changes the conditions for cooperation and dialogue between the public sector and organizations active in the civil society. At the same time, in a neo-liberal spirit, there is a market adjustment of the popular education, which changes the conditions for the study associations, the necessity and demand for social work-like activities at within popular education increases.

    Abstract [en]

Becoming an adoptive parent is not always easy. There are positive and negative factors affecting the parent’s experience. The aim of this study is to examine being an adoptive parent to an internationally adopted child based on association, parenthood and ethnic belonging. Frame of interpretation consists of attachment and separations, parenthood and family and ethnic origin and belonging. In order to fulfil the purpose of the study qualitative interviews were made. The selection consisted of six adoptive families that were separately interviewed, one occasion each. The result indicated that some families did not experience any specific difficulties in their parenting whereas other families did. The experiences differed between those who had adopted an older child and those who had adopted a younger child. Association was considered a long and time consuming process. The parents did not consider it to be anything special about being and adoptive parent but they mentioned that the child at the homecoming displayed symptoms from having gone through an adoption. The reaction from the surroundings had not affected the families to any extent worth mentioning but they still expressed that the child’s appearance was important as they wished the child to be similar looking. The conclusion is therefore that it is something special about being an adoptive parent.

Kuratorers perspektiv på nyblivna mammors förlossningsdepression2017Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Ekonomiskt våld i nära relation2014Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
