    Title: ”Youth (work)seekers”

    Author: Karolina Lindell

    Abstract

This essay focuses on young people’s social background when they apply for their first job. I have interviewed four young people from a small town in Sweden, to see how social background and identity affects their vital conditions in general. I’m interested understanding the relationship between structure and agency. I have used Anthony Giddens and Pierre Bourdieus theory’s about the link between structure and agency and have tried to see the similarities and the differences between the sociologist’s theories.

Working class people have been affected in negatives terms by both the quality and quantity of jobs currently available that does not demand a degree from University. Work opportunities for working class people have shifted away from reasonably paid skilled or semi-skilled industrial work to much lower paid service and out-of-reach white-collar work. Young people are the ones who suffer the most from the new conditions in the labour market and the traditional transitions from school to work have started to collapse. It is the working class kids that have the most problems finding work. In the Swedish small town where I did my interviews the industrial and electronic companies have moved their production facilities and the small town suffers from mass unemployment.

There is a great difference between what young people wants to work with and what opportunities they have on the job market. Young people without higher education have also a longer time to get a job, and to get their own accommodation, compared to their parent’s generation. The change in conditions for youth people have affected working class kids more negatively than kids from middle class backgrounds. On the other hand have the individualization changed the social class structure. It is difficult for all young people today to get their first job, no matter what social background they have. It is increasingly up to the individual to market herself on the job market and to be interesting for employers.

Implementation of International Programmes in Developing Countries: the Example of SAICM in Tanzania2008Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) is an international framework on sound chemicals management with the objective that “by the year 2020, chemicals are produced and used in ways that minimize significant adverse impacts on the environment and human health”. SAICM was adopted at the International Conference on Chemicals Management in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, in February 2006. To prepare countries to be able to implement SAICM the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) is currently running Pilot Projects in three developing countries and one county with economy in transition: Belarus, Pakistan, Tanzania and Panama. Between October and December 2007 we were doing a Minor Field Study in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, interviewing people involved in the implementation of their Pilot Project which is running from 2006-2009. Our paper consists of two parts, one descriptive and one analysing. In the first part we describe the initiation, the formulation, the implementation and the evaluation of SAICM and the Pilot Project in Tanzania and in the second part we analyse opportunities and hindrances for a successful implementation of the Pilot Project and SAICM in Tanzania. How is the UN governing the implementation, what resources of finances, knowledge, institutions and time does Tanzania have and how is the implementation influenced by different actors interests? We argue that the there is mixture of the top-down and the bottom-up models and that this mixture is fruitful, we argue that Tanzania has enough finances, knowledge and time to implement SAICM but lack institutions, and finally that the different interests are not too various to harm the process.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is on the one hand to study Sub-Saharan Africa from a comparative perspective to analyze different explanations to democratization and on the other hand to compare the democratization of the most interesting cases found. To fulfil the purpose, the essay is divided into a quantitative and a qualitative part. The quantitative part starts from four different theories of democratization and thus has a deductive theory testing approach. We intend to use four theories: the modernization theory, the theory of stable institutions as a prerequisite for democratization, political culture and ethnic diversity as an obstacle for democratization, to test how they correspond with the democratic situation in Africa, and at the same time find deviant cases. The second part of the study takes its start from an inductive perspective and examines institutions and citizens of the deviant cases. We have found that the stable institutions indicator and the socioeconomic indicators are the ones out of our indicators that best can explain democratization in Sub-Saharan Africa. The quantitative study also reveals two cases that are democracies although they do not follow the general patterns of democratization. Our research concludes that the most striking resemblance between our deviant cases, Benin and Mali, is that they have both developed stable institutions. This could be one reason why they have managed to democratize despite their harsh conditions.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this essay is to examine the approach of the EU towards the reform efforts of Turkey and Bosnia and Herzegovina in the countries ambitions for EU memberships. The question formulation of the essay is whether there is differences in Turkey’s and Bosnia and Herzegovina’s qualifications for an EU-membership from an EU perspective. In order to better answer the question, we use two part questions. One is about the criterias and qualifications that need to be met in order to get a membership. The other one is about the approach of the EU towards the two countries concerning EU memberships. Primarily we use official EU documents from which we make a qualitative content analysis. As an advanced feature, we use a comparative analysis in which the countries are compared in relation to each other. The conclusion of our study is that the EU's approach to Turkey's qualification for EU membership is more positive than to Bosnia and Herzegovina. We also conclude that other circumstances may affect our conclusion, and therefore our findings cannot be considered definite.

Keywords: EU, Turkey, Bosnia and Herzegovina, The Copenhagen criteria, democracy, rule of law, human rights, protection of minorities, enlargement.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate whether internal and external variables affect individual’s health and examine how long-term healthy people differ from other co-workers. The examination was carried out with a questionnaire among employees with different work. The internal scale contains variables of personality trait, locus of control, sense of coherence and optimism. The external scale contains demand, control, support, leadership and organizational culture variables. The result shows that long-term healthy people are more optimistic, self-confident and endure stress better than others. The internal scale has a significant relation with long-term health, and leadership is the best predictor for long-term health together with control, optimism and locus of control. One conclusion is that both internal and external variables are important for the health and it is important to work with all parts to achieve health.

The inherited education and the (un)free choice?

    - A comparative survey between five different programs on University of Örebro

The aim with this paper has been to examine and to report for different sociocultural background factors (class property, the parents' level of education, the parents' income) importance for the choice of type of education and to see if there is any differences between different university courses with respect to class property. Our issues were following:

    1. What/which sociocultural factors have had most importance for the choice of programs on universities?

    2. How is the distribution between the different classes in the different university programs?

Our study is a comparative survey with the aim to detect possible connection patterns, differences and resemblances with respect to the students' social background. In our survey we have used questionnaires as a method for data collection. Our ambition has not been to give a comprehensive picture of what/which sociocultural factors that had most importance for the students' choices to begin to study on universities throughout Sweden. Therefore, we delimited us only to carrying out the survey at University of Örebro. Our population consists thus of a programme from each faculty on University of Örebro.

The empirical material from the questionnaire survey, has been presented with appropriate statistical methods, it has been analyzed and discussed with the aid of Bourdieus habitus theory.

In this survey we can among other things establish that it occurs certain differences between the different programs, which have been included in the study, among other things with respect to class property. We have also found other relevant connection among different variables.

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

The purpose for writing this essay is to study the culture of kindness in the Church of Sweden, as the church constitutes as an idealistic organization (non-profit or voluntary organization).

The focal point is on how such a culture affects the employees, and if any new components

that can amplify the concept can be distinguished.

To do this a case study-design has been employed. The primary sources are qualitative

interviews with six employees in a congregation in the Church of Sweden, and participant

observations on two different occasions at the same congregation.

Theories of organizational sociology has been applied to the material, more specific Edgar H

Schein’s definition of organizational culture and the concept of a culture of kindness (deriving

from a report by the Swedish Work Environment Authority) as a specific part of the church’s

    organizational culture.

The conclusions we can make from our study is that a culture of kindness affect employees in

both a positive and a negative way. There are many expectations that come with working in

the Church of Sweden, and these do have an effect on the work performed. There is also

evidence pointing to the fact that leadership can counteract the fear of conflicts that otherwise

is associated with the culture of kindness. Finally one can conclude that the concept of

kindness culture could be elaborated, for instance with a notion of leadership.

Örebro och Opole, lika som bär?: - En komparativ studie av miljöarbetet i två medelstora städer i Sverige och Polen2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

skillnaderna även flera likheter i städernas miljöarbete.

    Abstract [en]

Regionalisation out of step - the varying growth of regional cooperation councils

Traditionally regionalisation is either seen as a bottom up movement or as state reform politics from above. From that perspective, Sweden contains both parts. The state enables regionalisation through legislation, promote it through policies and encourage it in rhetoric’s. But the formation of new regional institutions can only be done by the municipalities themselves. Without their belief in stronger and more self governed regions or their will to act and together build capacity in their region, the regionalisation is halted.

Sweden is a unitary state and there is no real tradition of strong and self governing regions. In that perspective the regional experiments during the second half of the 1990th can be seen as a rather big step. These experiments inspired other parts of Sweden and in the millennium shift, all counties was interested in forming some kind of selfgoverning regional body. In 2002, when legislation made it possible to build new political regional institutions, these new institutions were formed in seven counties. Since then, yet six counties have formed these new regional bodies. This variation raises several empirical questions. The main purpose of this study is to describe and explain the variation in growth of these new regional institutions.

The analysis follows three different perspectives. The first is a structural one and aims to investigate municipalities need for economic development as a driving force. The second is an institutional perspective where norms are supposed to promote cooperation. The third focus on promoting actors as a force behind the growth of new regional institutions. Through a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods this thesis shows that different kinds of social norms promoting collaboration are the most important factor in explaining the variation in growth of new regional institutions. The analysis also showed that political actors play an important, both in building and maintaining coopera-tive norms, and probably also in bridging the lack of them.

Den demokratiske islamisten?: En studie av tre islamistiska rörelser och deras demokratiseringspotential2007Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    ABSTRACT

Essay in Political Science, Advanced Continuation Course, 61-80 credits, by Jonas Nilsson

”The democratic islamist? - a study of three islamist movements and their potential role in a

    democratization process”

    Supervisor: Jonas Linde

The purpose of this work has been to explain to what extent islamist movements can be said to be

bearers of democratic values and if they have a role to play in future democratization processes. The

purpose of this work is also to examine the democratic views of the different islamist movements and

to compare them with each other in an effort to find a specific islamist definition of democracy.

The essay is a qualitative analysis of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, Front Islamique du Salut in

Algeria and Hezbollah in Lebanon. The analytical framework is based on the political institutions

included in Robert A. Dahl polyarchial democracy. The institutions provided by the polyarchial

model is used to define the islamist movements stand on democracy which is defined by three different

standpoints. The movements can either accept, decline or modify the various institutions and the

results from the analysis helps us to evaluate the future role of islamist movements in the

democratization process. The results also provides the opportunity to define a version of democracy

specific for the islamist movements. The conclusion I have made is that the islamist movements

included in the study have a part to play in a future democratization process. They have shown that

their commitment to the democratic ideals defined by Dahl is quite extensive and that they as

separate movements have developed a more advanced view of the relationship between islam and

democracy as a social order. Though democratic at first glance there are signs that the islamists

standpoint on democracy comes with certain reservations. The most significant of these

reservarvations is the islamists regard of islam as an overarching ideology and the subordinate role

of man made political systems such as democracy. However, the islamists have found ways to handle

this problem and points out the inherent democratic values in islam and thereby tries to circumvent

the problematic relationship between democracy and religion. The study also concludes that we can

define the islamist version of democracy as a specific form of democracy, a value-based participatory

democracy. This conclusion is based on the islamist emphasis on the importance of ethics, decency

and virtue in a society, at the same time as they also emphasize the need for legitimacy provided by

the people through free, fair and frequent elections.

Det offentliga samtalet: En argumentationsanalys av artikuleringen kring Kristianstad Arena2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Essay in Political Science C by Peter Nilsson, spring 2008.

Det offentliga samtalet – en argumentationsanalys av artikuleringen kring Kristianstad Arena

    Tutor: Stig Montin

The purpose of this essay is to examine the public deliberation of Kristianstad Arena in the local newspaper and clarify who the actors are and what kind of arguments they express. Further I intend to find the differences between the actors and the kind of arguments they use. To fulfill the purpose I’ve used three minor questions which are; a) which actors participate in the public deliberation about Kristianstad Arena, b) Which are the arguments emerge, c) Which clear differences in the arguments is there between the actors? To find my answers I’ve examined the local paper during a period of four months. The tool I’ve been using to analyze the arguments has its origin in Toulmin’s model from 1958. The conclusion of the essay is that the public deliberation involves seven different kind of actors, who express’s three different kind of arguments. The actors are private persons, politicians, politically un-attached thinkers, politically attached thinkers, local business world, sports associations and media. The three types of arguments are about, the decision, the arena and the debate. The private persons and the politicians resemble each other and mainly express arguments about the decision and partly about the arena. The politically attached and un-attached thinkers more or less exclusively express arguments about the decision. The local business has an equal share of decision- and arena arguments, while the media and the sport associations mainly express arguments about the debate and the arena.

“Car availability or not, believes of the members of the municipal council of Örebro”

    Instructor: Stig Molin

The purpose of this research paper is among others to get an insight to what the members of the municipal council of Örebro believes and how they wish the traffic situation should be in a future Örebro. Another purpose of this study is to see if the members of the municipal council have a correct idea how the citizens of Örebro regards/wish at the issue.

I have to my assistance used one main question and six additional follow up questions. The main question is: How do the members of the municipal council of Örebro want the future car availability designed in the central Örebro. With respect to this main question I have afterwards assumed these six resulting questions: What do the members of the municipal council believe around the question, Do the members of the municipal council have a correct idea of what the citizens think about the question, Is there any similarity/difference between male and female politician, Is there any similarities among the answer between the political parties, is there a clear right/left perspective among the answers, Does it occur any similarities among the answers when it comes to age of the members.

My course of action has been to send a questionnaire to all ordinary member of the municipal council in Örebro, with their reply and answers to the questionnaire have I afterwards answered the questions of this research paper. I will be focusing on the present time while the history will have a small role in this research paper.

My results are as following: The members of the municipal council in Örebro have a attitude towards car traffic in central Örebro which matches the believes of the citizens of municipal Örebro. Both the majority of the politicians and citizens wish to see changes in the traffic situation in central Örebro, their common will is to limit the maximum allowed speed on central Örebro and make central Örebro more available for walking, bicycles and buss traffic. With this result as starting point thus central Örebro be designed to give unprotected road-users and buss traffic with their passenger’s better prerequisite to exist in central region.

    The environmental goals

An example of steering with goals in practise

The Swedish parliament has decided on sixteen national environmental goals which are

supposed to be implemented by steering with goals. The purpose of this essay is to describe

how steering with goals works in practise within the environmental sphere. This by examine

which actors participate and what their responsibilities are, and also if there are any

cooperation’s or conflicts in the environmental goal sphere. The method to this is a policy

study with focus on the implementation phase of the policy process. The take off point on this

is the formal decision, with other words a traditional top down perspective .To analyse how

the steering in the implementation phase works, Lennart Lundquists typology on steering is

used. The analysis shows that there are several participants in the work with the goals, the

administration with a special responsibility, the county administrative boards, the counties and

the commercial and industrial life and finally the environmental organizations. The analysis

also shows that steering with goals has some effect on the administration, but not in sufficient

extent, while the goals are not going to be reached. The work with the environmental goals

postulates that the actors work together but the analysis shows that there is no strong

cooperation’s, cooperation’s exists but the goals are not reached which suggests that there is

other reasons. One explanation could be the fact that the environmental work contains several

conflicts. The conclusion is that steering with goals affects the actors but not in the great

extent that the goals are reached.

    Abstract [sv]

“Traditionalism versus Modernism. The Ideology Debate in Left-Socialist Party Today”

    Instructor: Mats Lindberg

The purpose with this essay is to describe the ideology debate in Left-Socialist Party between traditionalists and modernists. This essay have the following questions: 1 ) What are the differences between traditional and modern politics in the Left-Socialist Party? 2 ) What is similar between traditional and modern politics in the Left-Socialist Party? My method is to analyse the Left-Socialist Party programme from 2004 and analyse a programme from the modernist organisation Vagval Vanster. Then I shall compare the political views between those programmes. My results show that there are many differences but also similarity. For example the traditionalism wants to keep their political views and wait on the citizens to realise that a better world is possible. The modernists seek to renew their political views beacause they believe that no party has a self-value. The big similarity between the two groups are that they think the present society is unjust and not democratic enough. I think this essay has been very stimulating and I was suprised of some of the differences between the two groups.

Regionkommunernas storlek: En balansakt mellan demokrati och effektivitet2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Sammandrag

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to analyse how space heating for single-family houses, and energy system conversion has been constructed and discussed at national, municipal and household levels. Political documents have been studied, and interviews have been carried out with politicians, civil servants and householders in the municipality of Falun. In order to study and analyse similarities and differences between these three political levels, the following main questions were asked: In which sense is the use of electrical heating formulated as problematic? How are the causes of these problems presented, and which solutions are suggested? What are the effects of how problems, causes and solutions are constructed?

At the national level, the use of electricity produced by nuclear power was considered a problem. Initially the municipality’s policy documents present the same problem, but there is a change of focus to the problem of imported electricity produced by fossil fuel, and the resulting emissions. At household level, the problem was often an old and badly functioning space-heating system. But some households did not formulate a problem before they converted. Instead they were influenced by their neighbours and thereby convinced.

At all three political levels, there is consensus on the households’ responsibility concerning energy transition. While industry tends to be considered incapable of cutting down its energy consumption, households are expected to take the responsibility seriously. Furthermore, within the household, the heating system tends to be constructed as a predominantly male concern.

At all three levels, households are perceived as dependant on economical subsidies when taking the decision to convert from electrical heating. Although it is interesting that the interviewed householders only apply this view to others than themselves. They are convinced that other households need subsidies to act in an environmentally correct way.

The discourse concerning the Swedish energy transition illustrates a shift away from a definition of ecological modernisation where environmental considerations influence economic development. The thesis clearly shows how economic arguments repeatedly influence environmental concerns. However, the tension between the two is played down and concealed through the lack of problematisation of the responsibility of industry, and through the focus on the need for education and future opportunities. Political dialogues concerning the use of electrical heating and the conversion of energy systems towards more renewable energies are dominated by economic arguments at the three levels. One effect of this is an assumption that energy policy instruments such as information and economic subsidies are essential for the energy transition. However, if householders rather are influenced by their neighbours should the government use economic subsidy as the main energy policy instrument?

Depression: vor tidsalders vrangside2007Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

What are the social conditions that enable depression to play a significant societal role in contemporary Western societies? This is the leading question of the dissertation. As an alternative to those who claim that contemporary depression is constructed by the exorbitant consumption of antidepressants, it is stated that both depression and the consumption of antidepressants is

possible due to contemporary social conditions. Inspired by the analysis of modernity by Wagner, and on the basis of the theoretical concept of third modernity as proposed by Carleheden, it is claimed that an ethical conduct of life that demands authentic self-realization has been institutionalised in

our historical epoch. By analysing how authentic self-realization is being realized in the new spirit of capitalism (Boltanski & Chiapello), it is being concluded that the socializing parameters of third modernity are those of being able to be active, flexible, polyvalent, adaptable, versatile etc. selves. Hence, authentic self-realization in imbued with these normative demands. In relation to the phenomenon of depression this is interesting, because contemporary depression can be understood, not as a subjective condition, but as a phenomenon of lack. What is being applauded in the society of today is just what depressive individuals lack, namely the ability to act in accordance

with the normative claims of self-realization. Depressed individuals are in that sense failed selves (Ehrenberg) who represent and informs us about the “other side” of contemporary normative self-realization requirements. In other words: Within present-day society the institutionalized demands for authentic self-realization and depression have become each others antithesis. This socially demanded form of self-realization – which is put under the scrutiny of normative critique (Taylor) – is thus exactly what allows for depression to play such a significant role in present-day Western societies.
