Emotional labour and emotional strain in late-modern prison work2009Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper explores emotional labour strategies among Swedish prison officers, and how these affect the emotional strain. Case studies of five Swedish prisons and a national survey of prison officers are used. Analysis indicates that prison officers perform complex emotional labour. Due to differences in subcultures and informal norms, the strategies officers use in managing their emotional display vary between wings and roles. Different strategies may also cause different kinds of emotional strain. Emotional surface acting may lead to cynicism and alienation tendencies, while deep acting may lead to stress and exhaustion.

The prison officer's dilemma: professional representations among Swedish prison officers2010In: Les Dossiers des sciences de l'education, ISSN 1296-2104, Vol. 23, no 1, p. 77-93Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The article is based on a study of Swedish prison officers. We analyse two types of professional representations, that is, their collectively evolved knowledge. A point of departure is the existence of sub-cultural gaps between different groups of officers. Society’s contradictory aims with the prison system lead to a permanent dilemma in prison work between security and rehabilitation. This dilemma becomes evident in the professional representations studied. However, there are also some differences in relation to different sub-cultural belongings. In our analysis of how prison officers deal with the dilemma in everyday practice we develop three ideal types - the frustrated, the rigid and the flexible one.

Media och socialt arbete: en explorativ studie av medierapporteringen som påverkansfaktor inom socialtjänsten i Sverige och Finland2001In: Nordicom Information, ISSN 0349-5949, Vol. 23, no 2, p. 31-43Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract [en]

Utsatthet hos ungdomar med hörselskada: intersektionell analys2009In: , 2009Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Self-rated mental health, school adjustment, and substance use in hard-of-hearing adolescents2008In: Journal of Deaf Studies and Deaf Education, ISSN 1081-4159, E-ISSN 1465-7325, Vol. 13, no 3, p. 324-335Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This survey, "Life and Health—Young People 2005," included all 15/16-year-old adolescents in mainstream schools in the county of Örebro, Sweden. Just students with a slight/mild or moderate hearing loss were included. There were 56 (1.9%) "hard-of-hearing (HH) students with multiple disabilities," 93 (3.1%) students who were "just HH," 282 (9.7%) students with some "other disability than HH," and 2,488 (85.2%) students with "no disability." "HH with multiple disabilities" reported considerably higher scores for mental symptoms, substance use, and school problems than the "no disability" group. Those with "just HH" and those with "other disability than HH" had more mental symptoms and school problems than the "no disability" group but no significant differences in substance use. In conclusion, the combination of a hearing loss and some other disability strongly increases the risk for mental symptoms, school problems, and substance use. This group, thus, is an important target for preventive measures.

Sexuality of 15/16-year-old girls and boys with and without modest disabilities2009In: Sexuality and disability, ISSN 0146-1044, E-ISSN 1573-6717, Vol. 27, no 3, p. 139-153Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Girls and boys with disabilities, 15-16 years of age, report a significantly higher rate of sexual debut than adolescents with no disabilities. In a society where a young person with a disability often is considered to have an essentially asexual status, there can be several fronts for adolescents to fight. The survey Life and Health - Young People 2005 was completed by  3,084 adolescents attending mainstream schools in Sweden. In this study the sexual debut in girls and boys with and without disabilities is related to mental health, school exposure and substance use. Our findings might be explained by a mechanism of identity construction from the adolescents' ideas of normality and by a battle for acceptance and confirmation of life. The ideas of normality can be erroneous but still influence the adolescents' sexual activity. Multivariate analyses also showed that the relationship between sex and substance use is strong among all adolescents.

Att höra eller nästan inte höra: Liv & hälsa ung 2005 och 2007 i Örebro län2009Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Hard-of-hearing adolescents reporting some other disability or tinnitus: a replication study including an age-related analysis2009Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

In two previous studies based on the survey, Life & Health Young 2005 in Örebro county 15-16 years old Hard-of-hearing (HH) students with some other disability (HHDIS) and HH with tinnitus (HHTINN) reported considerably higher scores for mental symptoms and substance use than adolescents ‘just‘ HH or hearing adolescents.

In order to replicate these findings we analysed the 2007 survey and included adolescents in grade 7, 9 and 2 in secondary school concerning substance use and depression. We also used reference data from the corresponding adult survey Life & Health 2008. In grade 9 HHDIS (2.0%) and HHTINN (2.0 %) both reported strongly increased rates of risky alcohol consumption (55/51% versus 13%), daily tobacco use (57/54% versus 10%) and depression (43/43% versus 14%) than hearing or ´just´ HH adolescents. Similar but less pronounced changes were present in grade 7 and grade 2. In HHDIS increased risk drinking was found until age 35, increased daily tobacco use until age 50 and increased depression until age 65. In HHTINN only rate of depression was increased in adult life.

HHDIS and HHTINN thus are important targets for preventive measures. In addition tinnitus in young people can be a marker like disability of vulnerability.

    Abstract [en]

Many Swedish urban neighborhoods have since they were constructed suffered from a bad reputation and have had a lack of strong socioeconomic groups settling there. This study is about a suburb in a medium-sized Swedish town and the purpose is to find out which social problems that exist there. The aim is also to explain the actors who work with adolescents in the area, which interventions and activities are offered, and whether they can be characterized as pro-social, as well as how the cooperation between the actors looks like. A qualitative approach with semi-structured interviews was carried out, involving nine respondents, who are active in the public and nonprofit sector. The interview guide used is designed and divided into different themes based on the survey questions. The result shows that the social problems that mainly distinguishes it selves in the area are unemployment and segregation, and as a result of this a certain family and youth problems occur. There exists a large number of actors in the residential area and thus a variety of actions and activities targeted to children and adolescents exist. Most of these actors cooperate and mainly and foremost, the municipality plays a significant role as a coordinator through a so-called community group, where the majority of all actors participate. Some of the respondents expressed that more organization and commitment are needed. They believe that one of the biggest obstacles to the pro-social efforts is that the residential area has an undeserved bad reputation and that it is particularly the media's stigmatization of the residents that is a major problem, with focus on the young people.

Kognitiv beteendeterapi i självhjälpsformat vid förlossningsrädsla2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

The United States Supreme Court and the European Court of Justice: A Comparative Study of Compliance2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This paper comparatively compares compliance to the rulings of the United States Supreme Court and the ECJ by the state/member state courts. Besides comparing the compliance to the two courts judgements, the paper also tries to establish how to increase compliance with these rulings in the future. This is done because compliance is an important aspect of a functioning judicial system, and a comparison might reveal solutions from one side that could be utilized on the other.

The main resources used in this book are: articles, books, webpages and statistics on the subject. The main focus lies on the legal approach, but as a comparative study, elements of political science have been used as well.

The results of the comparison show that although statistical compliance is quite high, the actual compliance might be lower due to lack of knowledge or political divisions. Increasing the actual compliance is then a good strategy to be sure that lower courts follow the rulings correctly.

The conclusion of this paper is that political and policy divisions in a country, or between an organization and its members results in non- compliance. Reducing this kind of friction will help increase compliance to decisions, not only statistically but also in practice, as the lower courts will feel more comfortable with the rulings. An increase of knowledge of the subject, and the development of efficient judicial mechanisms in a state will also help assure correct interpretation of the rulings.

Transparency Today: Openness in the European Union2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This paper explains the position of the principle of transparency in the EU up to the year 2010. (Including the changes made by the Lisbon treaty.)

The question to answer is: how could transparency develop into a general principle without being mentioned explicitly in the legislation? It was also out to try to see what the future of transparency might look like.

In the conclusion it was found that openness and transparency was not something fixed, but an evolving concept. If it was encoded into a single written principle, it could hamper the institutions‟ adaptation to the developing case-law. In the end I concluded that with will and trust, transparency could continue to grow in the future.

Hur identifierar svenska ungdomar med cochleaimplantat sig själva i förhållande till döva, hörselskadade och hörande?2009Student paper other, 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    ABSTRACT

The purpose of the study is to examine how Swedish youth with Cochlear Implants (CI) identify themselves in relation to deaf, hearing impaired and hearing people. In order to answer the purpose of this study, these questions have been used as starting-points:

    • How does young people look at their CI?

    • What language does CI-bearing young people recognize as their first language?

    • How does CI-bearing young people believe deaf, hearing impaired and hearing persons look at them?

The study is a descriptive, qualitative, and phenomenological analysis to capture the individuals' own experiences around the CI. Six young persons over 15 years, who have been using CI in some years were selected. They were attending sign language, hearing, and integrated classes. They were interviewed using an interview guide.

The result shows that most CI-bearing young people identify themselves closest  to the hearing impaired group. CI allows them to choose between being deaf or hearing-impaired and is a good support in various everyday situations. The difficulty to place CI youth in any existing group suggests that they probably belong to a new identity group, a CI group identity. Interview subjects first language are by some persons reported to be the spoken language, while others report sign language. Interview subjects feel that deaf, hearing and hearing-impaired people relate to them as hearing, hearing-impaired or deaf persons. The social environment´s perception of CI-bearing young people often differ from how they perceive themselves.

    Abstract

The aim of this qualitative study is to examine client experience of two kinds of addiction treatment. The examined organisations were The Alcohol and Narcotic Group, which is an out-patient program in Lindesberg, and The Foundation of Bergslagsgårdar in Örebro, which specialises in family home treatment for adults.

Interviews were conducted with eight clients between 25 to 58 years of ages, with four clients taken from each organisation. Each client had a contextual substance abuse variation. A semi-structured interview guide was formulated according to the aim of the study and the research questions, within an interpretive framework. The implemented theoretical contexts used are identity, social world and coping strategies. This study builds upon previous research pertaining to addiction treatments, motivation, forced or voluntarily care, and effective key ingredients within addiction treatments.

The result and analysis have been divided into three themes:

    1)      Opinions about treatment

    2)      Maintaining freedom from substance abuse

    3)      Social inclusion and change

The result indicates that client attitude is consistently positive towards treatment and that motivation is important for rehabilitation. Client motivation arises either before the treatment's start or during its duration, as a consequence of social conditions and/or through interaction with care givers. The result emphasises that a combination of care treatments coupled with other social conditions have produced clients with the ability to maintain freedom from substance abuse.

The Effects of Physical Activity on Adolescents Long- Term Memory2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

There is a body of research on the effect of physical activity oncognition in the old adult population. Less research areconducted on adolescents. The aim for this study is to find out ifadolescents long-term memory is affected by physical activity.144 pupils were asked to rate their physical activity each week.Thereafter their long- term memory was tested through tests onepisodic- and semantic memory. The results showed that thosewho are physically active more than 4 hours had a better scoreon part of the semantic test but no effect was found in theepisodic test. This result indicates that physical activity not onlyaffects working memory, as was shown by previous research butalso has an effect in parts of the semantic long-term memory.

    Abstract [en]

This study examined the psychological processes of autonomic arousal and distress, erroneous beliefs about sleep, worry about sleep, selective attention and monitoring and safety behaviours related to sleep, on the subject of daytime impairments associated with insomnia. The psychological processes were evaluated against as follows: sleep measures, anxiety, depression, medical disease and the use of medications. The measure daytime impairments complied with the established research diagnostic criteria. A correlation analysis indicated that psychological process, anxiety, depression and one of the sleep measures are associated with daytime impairments. The results of a multiple regression analysis proved that only erroneous beliefs about sleep, worry about sleep and safety behaviours related to sleep are linked to daytime impairments associated with insomnia. An influential mechanism taking part in the psychological processes appears to be catastrophic thinking concerning personal sleep. One crucial clinical conclusion is that treatments for daytime impairments associated with insomnia should focus more on the relevant psychological processes, rather than on the particular sleep difficulties.

Domestic services in a "land of equality": the case of Sweden2011In: Canadian Journal of Women and the Law, ISSN 0832-8781, E-ISSN 1911-0235, Vol. 23, no 1, p. 121-139Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

For about two generations, paid domestic work was very rare in Sweden and the disappearance of domestic work from private households was widely considered to be important from anequalityperspective. In the past two decades, the demand for householdserviceshas increased, however, due to the decline in institutional and social services and an increasing wage differential. At the same time, globalization, particularly the enlargement of the European Union, has led to increased access to labour from countries with considerably lower wages than Sweden. In this article, the historical background of today's regulation of paid domestic work in Sweden is described. The existing governance of paid domestic work is then analyzed with respect to how it produces inequality and diversity through deregulation, individualization, and privatization. Further, the existing Swedish regulation is discussed from the perspectiveofrights and access to justice, utilizing some key elementsofthe proposed Conventionofthe International Labour Organization. Regulation and protection of domestic work result in the improvement of conditions in the short term, but it is my belief that the way to banish inequality and vulnerability in the long term must be the collectivizationofdomestictasks and also the equal sharingofsuch tasks between women and men. Such changes, however, must involveawider selectionofsociety, includingagenerous provisionofgood public childcare, socialservicesand health care, parental leave shared by women and men, and abo genderequalityin wages and income tax regulation. Finally, it requires that everybody who is physically capable of cleaning should take this task on for themselves.

    Abstract [en]

Members of an employer’s family are exempted from the Swedish Employment Protection Act. This exception, which may be seen in the light of the ban on discrimination on the grounds of family status of EC law, strengthens the prerogative of the employer. It may result in the working party having no employment contract, pay, or other benefits and also no union membership or other connection to the labour market. It also typically increases the dependence of an employer’s spouse, counteracting the aim of mutual autonomy between spouses in Swedish family law. This dependence in turn may acquire a new meaning in a context of an international labour market, a growing income gap, and an increasing dependence on the family for survival. This paper explores these contradictions, posing questions such as the following: How has this exception changed with the development of society? How has it historically been justified and which societal values does it mirror? How has the personal scope of the exception been defined and what effects does the exclusion have today for family members, both legally and practically?

Boende i flerfamiljshus: En juridisk komparation mellan bostadsrätt, hyresrätt och ägarlägenhet2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Networking has grown steadily stronger during the last thirty years in Sweden. The work aims to see the individual as a whole. The purpose of this study is to examine how social workers and clients in child and adolescent unit in a specific municipality experiencing participation in network meetings. It also aims to explore the positive and negative aspects concerning the network meetings as social workers and clients highlight. The method used to answer the purpose is qualitative. Three social secretary and three clients were interviewed on social services in the specific municipality. An optional equality and a convenience sample were used. The results show that currently none of the respondents are fully satisfied with network meetings as the method. They have different suggestions on what's missing and what could be improved. For example, a client wishes more official meetings and a social worker looking for more opportunity for analysis of alternative sources of help and improvement of the client's current situation. The conclusion reached in this study is that official meetings are preferable to try to get as good results as possible.

    Abstract [en]

The Youth Outcome Questionnaire 2.0 Self Report (Y-OQ 2.0 SR) has been implemented in residential treatment centre in the Municipality of Örebro as a result of the strive for a more evidence-based working approach within social work. This study aims to examine how personnel and adolescents describe the treatment/counseling and support and the application of the Y-OQ 2.0 SR in the units. The questions cover the values the personnel and adolescents ascribe to the application of the Y-OQ 2.0 SR, if the result from Y-OQ 2.0 SR is congruent with how the adolescents have been affected during the placement, which obstacles and/or possibilities emerge in the management of the instrument and if there are any indications that the Y-OQ 2.0 SR is advantageous or disadvantageous in the treatment process. The study has a qualitative approach; four interviews were carried out with adolescents and five with personnel. The result shows that structure is an important component in attaining a change in behaviour. The adolescents' functional ability is to some extent congruent with the result from the Y-OQ 2.0 SR. The instrument is primarily used to evaluate the treatment and to guarantee the quality of the work of the personnel. Both obstacles and possibilities emerged in the management of the instrument. The personnel's attitude towards the instrument's purpose is positive. The adolescents' attitudes vary and this seems to be connected with how involved they are in the feedback process of the instrument's result. Whether or not the feedback of the result from the Y-OQ 2.0 SR is an advantage or disadvantage in the treatment process on the basis of involvement is discussed.
