Mikroaggressioner och hbtq – våld som blir vardag2024Inngår i: Texter om våld, ISSN 2004-3775, nr 1, s. 57-68Artikkel i tidsskrift (Annet (populærvitenskap, debatt, mm))
    Abstract [sv]

Minority joy: Positive aspects experienced by trans* people2023Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Trans* people are at an increased risk for developing mental and physical illness compared to cis people. This is explained by the higher risk of experiencing minority stress, that is, the increased risk for being exposed to both external stressors, such as violence, threats, and questioning, as well as internal stressors, such as worry about being exposed and internalized transphobia.

Despite this, many trans* people do well and are generally satisfied with their lives. The important, focus on stressors and ill-health can therefore be problematized as giving a one-sided picture of trans* peoples lives. It can be assumed that a trans* identity can open up new possibilities and experiences that are experienced as positive. Few international studies and no Swedish study had been done to investigate positive aspects of identifying as trans*.

The present study aims to answer the question if positive aspect, here called minority joy, exist and how they are experienced and described by trans* people. Preliminary data has been analyzed, based on interviews with five trans men and six trans women. Interviews with people with non-binary identities are ongoing and additional interviews will be held during the winter.

Preliminary results show that trans* people describe positive aspects in several areas: Authenticity, Gender euphoria, To break norms, Activism, Unique understanding from living in two genders, Community, and Absence of negative emotions.

The findings are in line with previous positive aspects, but also contribute important information that has not been conceptualized in a Swedish context before. This information can potentially be important for both trans* people, health care givers, and society at large to nuance the ongoing debate.

Minority joy: The future of LGBTQ+ research?2023Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

LGBTQ+ people and especially trans* people are at an increased risk for developing mental and physical illness compared to cis people.

The important, focus on stressors and ill-health can therefore be problematized as giving a one-sided picture of trans* peoples' lives. It can be assumed that a trans* identity can open up new possibilities and experiences that are experienced as positive. Few international studies and no Swedish study had been done to investigate positive aspects of identifying as trans*.

The present study aims to answer the question if positive aspects, here called minority joy, exist and how they are experienced and described by trans* people. Preliminary data has been analyzed, based on interviews with five trans men and six trans women. Ten more interviews have been done and are being transcribed. And more interviews specifically with people with non-binary identities are ongoing.

The concept of minority joy could hopefully be a vital part of LGBTQ+ research and minority research in general and contribute to a less problem focused perspective on minority peoples' lives.

Skeletal muscle morphology and aerobic capacity in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome2008Inngår i: Respiration, ISSN 0025-7931, E-ISSN 1423-0356, Vol. 76, nr 1, s. 21-27Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Despite the fact that patients with obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS) often have symptoms at the level of skeletal muscle such as fatigue, the question of whether the structural, cellular and functional properties of limb skeletal muscles are affected has not been fully examined. Objective: The aim was to examine physiological and muscular parameters in patients with OSAS and to assess the relationship between these parameters and the clinical symptoms. Method: Eighteen patients with OSAS and 16 controls participated. Aerobic capacity was assessed using a submaximal test. Fibre type distribution and fibre area were analyzed on muscle biopsies taken from the tibialis anterior. The microvascularization was assessed using the following parameters: (1) the number of capillaries per fibre (CAF), (2) CAF per fibre area (CAFA), (3) capillary to fibre perimeter exchange (CFPE) index, which represents the interface between muscle fibre and capillaries, and (4) length of capillary/perimeter of the fibre (LC/PF) index or capillary tortuosity, which represents the percent of muscle fibre perimeter in contact with the wall of the microvessel. Results: The OSAS group had significantly lower predicted relative maximal oxygen uptake (p = 0.0047) which was inversely correlated to the apnoea/hypopnoea index (AHI; r = –0.6, p = 0.017). There was a significantly higher CFPE index for slow type I fibres (p = 0.007) and fast type II fibres (p = 0.0126) and a significantly higher LC/PF index for type I fibres (p = 0.0003) and type II fibres (p = 0.0285) in OSAS patients compared to controls. Conclusion: OSAS patients have a higher muscle microvascularization and a lower aerobic capacity than controls. Furthermore the aerobic capacity was inversely correlated to AHI.

Skeletal muscle morphology in patients with restless legs syndrome2007Inngår i: European Neurology, ISSN 0014-3022, E-ISSN 1421-9913, Vol. 58, nr 3, s. 133-137Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

AIM: The aim of the study was to assess the cellular and structural properties of skeletal muscle in restless legs syndrome (RLS).

METHOD: Twenty patients and 16 controls were included. Aerobic performance was assessed using a submaximal test. On muscle biopsies taken from the tibialis anterior, fiber distribution and fiber area were analyzed together with parameters surveying the microvascularization, especially the tortuosity, which is expressed as a percent of muscle fiber perimeter in contact with the wall of the microvessel, length of capillary/perimeter of fiber (LC/PF) index.

RESULTS: The RLS group had significantly lower predicted maximal oxygen uptake (p = 0.01) and significantly higher LC/PF index (p = 0.01) compared to the controls.

CONCLUSION: The higher capillary tortuosity in RLS patients indicates the occurrence of significant remodeling in capillary geometry in RLS.

The expression of vascular endothelial growth factor in skeletal muscle of patients with sleep disorders2009Inngår i: Muscle and Nerve, ISSN 0148-639X, E-ISSN 1097-4598, Vol. 40, nr 4, s. 556-561Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

An increased capillary network has been observed in the skeletal muscle in patients with Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) and Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). These changes could be due to upregulation of growth factors responsible for angiogenesis.

The aim of the study was to examine the occurrence and localization of VEGF and capillary proliferation in skeletal muscle of RLS (n=12), OSAS (n=12) and controls (n=11).

Double-immunofluorescence staining for capillaries (CD31) and VEGF, and proliferating cells (Ki-67), was carried out on biopsies taken from the tibialis anterior. The percentage of capillaries expressing VEGF (CD31,VEGF+)  was significantly higher in OSAS and RLS compared to controls. The percentage of proliferating capillaries (CD31,Ki-67+)  was significantly higher in OSAS compared with controls.

In conclusion our study shows the occurrence of proliferation of endothelial cells in skeletal muscle in RLS and OSAS, supporting an upregulation of VEGF located in capillaries probably due to local hypoxia.

    Abstract [en]

In recent times, commensality or eating together has been discussed as an important part of family culture and identity, and as one of the most important parts of socialization. Here we would like to draw attention to the Swedish fika break, an in-between meal of particular significance in Sweden, where fika is an everyday ritual at home as well as in the work place. As with other commensality practices, the most valuable parts are not the edibles or drinkables that are consumed but what is created over those edibles and drinkables. We outline possible ways that Fika could be studied and potential dimensions of particular interest.

Workplace Outcomes in Work-Disability Prevention Research: A Review with Recommendations for Future Research2016Inngår i: Journal of occupational rehabilitation, ISSN 1053-0487, E-ISSN 1573-3688, Vol. 26, nr 4, s. 434-447Artikkel, forskningsoversikt (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Introduction: Outcome assessment is a central issue in work disability prevention research. The goal of this paper was to (1) ascertain the most salient workplace outcomes; (2) evaluate the congruence between business and science perspectives; (3) illustrate new perspectives on assessing longitudinal outcomes; and (4) provide recommendations for advancing outcome evaluation in this area of research.

Methods: The authors participated in a year-long collaboration that culminated in a sponsored 3-day conference, "Improving Research of Employer Practices to Prevent Disability", held October 14-16, 2015, in Hopkinton, MA, USA. The collaboration included a topical review of the literature, group conference calls to identify key areas and challenges, drafting of initial documents, review of industry publications, and a conference presentation that included feedback from peer researchers and a question/answer session with a special panel of knowledge experts with direct employer experience.

Results: Numerous workplace work-disability prevention outcome measures were identified. Analysis indicated that their applicability varied depending on the type of work disability the worker was experiencing. For those who were working, but with health-related work limitations (Type 1), predominant outcomes were measures of productivity, presenteeism, and work-related limitations. For those who were off work due to a health condition (Type 2), predominant outcomes were measures of time off work, supervisor/employee interactions, and return-to-work (RTW) preparation. For those who had returned to work (Type 3), predominant outcomes were measures of presenteeism, time until RTW, percentage of work resumption, employment characteristics, stigma, work engagement, co-worker interactions, and sustained or durable RTW. For those who had withdrawn from the labor force (Type 4), predominant outcomes were cost and vocational status.

Discussion: Currently available measures provide a good basis to use more consistent outcomes in disability prevention in the future. The research area would also benefit from more involvement of employers as stakeholders, and multilevel conceptualizations of disability outcomes.

Porr, sexism och våldtäktsmyter2020Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Män rapporterade våldtäktsmyter i högre utsträckning än kvinnor.

Nudges, Norms, or Just Contagion? A Theory on Influences on the Practice of (Non-)Sustainable Behavior2020Inngår i: Sustainability, E-ISSN 2071-1050, Vol. 12, nr 24, artikkel-id 10418Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

‘Nudging’ symbolizes the widespread idea that if people are only provided with the ‘right’ options and contextual arrangements, they will start consuming sustainably. Opposite to this individual-centered, top-down approach stand observations highlighting the ‘contagiousness’ of thoughts, emotions, and behaviors of reference groups or persons present in a decision-context. Tying in these two lines, this paper argues that nudging may sound promising and easily applicable, yet the social dynamics occurring around it can easily distort or nullify its effects. This argument stems from empirical evidence gained in an exploratory observation study conducted in a Swedish cafeteria (N = 1073), which included a ‘nudging’ treatment. In the study, people in groups almost unanimously all chose the same options. After rearranging the choice architecture to make a potentially sustainable choice easier, people stuck to this mimicking behavior—while turning to choose more the non-intended option than before. A critical reflection of extant literature leads to the conclusion that the tendency to mimic each other (unconsciously) is so strong that attempts to nudge people towards certain choices appear overwhelmed. Actions become ‘contagious’; so, if only some people stick to their (consumption) habits, it may be hard to induce more sustainable behaviors through softly changing choice architectures.

Varieties of Political Consumerism: From Boycotting to Buycotting2019Bok (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This book provides an analysis of the politics of consumption and how the ‘educated consumer’ plays a vital role in advancing responsible market practices and consumption. Based on a comprehensive interdisciplinary perspective, it explores the extent, drives and links of boycotting, buycotting, labelling schemes and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in 20 European countries. A central question addressed is whether macro-societal patterns of orientation concerning the roles of the state, companies and citizens can explain individual and cross-national differences in boycotting and buycotting. As the book shows, there is not one type of ‘political consumer’, but several, and their occurrence is directly connected to national variations of labelling schemes and Corporate Social Responsibility. Consumers need reference points and information on the political backgrounds of purchases, and policy makers must address that need through political measures which fit to the national patterns in views about cooperation and market relationships.

Feminist Political and Legal Theories2023Inngår i: Gender-Competent Legal Education / [ed] Dragica Vujadinović; Mareike Fröhlich; Thomas Giegerich, Springer, 2023, 1, s. 57-94Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter presents an overview of feminist legal and political thought, aiming at discussing the different perspectives within feminist thought. In the first part, basic concepts in feminist thought such as gender, patriarchy, and feminism are explained, and a brief overview of the historical evolution of feminist movements is provided. The other two sections focus in greater detail on political and legal theories, respectively, including a critical analysis of the influence of patriarchy on mainstream legal and political discourses. The chapter will further provide a description of how classical concepts of political or legal tradition have been reconsidered from a feminist point of view, and a short presentation of the most important issues at stake in both these fields.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This article explores gender differences in politic al communication among blogging politicians. The article sets out to explore two ba seline questions: (1) Are distinct gendered ‘blogstyles’ to be found among political representa tives? and (2) How do gender and gendered blogstyles interplay and affect the impact of political blogs? The empirical study draws on a survey targeting blogging politicians in Sweden (N=523). The analysis identifies substantial differences in how female and male poli ticians communicate in the blogosphere as well as the outcomes in terms of feedback and impac t. Female politicians, to a greater degree than their male counterparts, utilize blogging for the purpose of fostering a stronger connection with their readers as well as to enquire about ideas and policy perspectives. This strategy seems to be successful for fostering quali tative feedback from readers yet female bloggers have far less impact than their male colle ges. We discuss two potential understandings of these results; relating to gender stereotypes and the network power structure of the blogosphere.

    Abstract [en]

In seeking to explain intimate partner violence (IPV), feminist research has shifted its focus from individual explanations to the social contexts of such violence. Adopting such a perspective, we explore the narratives of three men who identify as perpetrators of violence and three women who identify as victims/survivors of IPV. Our analyses focus on how the participants present their relationships, employing the notion of affective–discursive practices as informing, at times constituting, the participants’ experiences. Their stories are characterised by a chronological line – retrospective, present, and prospective. Their understandings change in framing their experiences, with the relationships themselves becoming affective–discursive practices, albeit figuring differently in the participants’ stories across time. Our findings also underline the significance of shame as a regulatory mechanism sustaining heteronormative practices.

    Abstract [en]

Purpose: Gender diversity is extensively debated and researched in relation to corporate boards. The focus on the gender composition on single boards neglects an important issue: that of how the power of board members is impacted by their representation on other boards. Board interlocks refer to how a board member is also represented on other companies' boards, and such representation expectedly makes the individual board member more influential in the boardroom than non-connected board members. The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether and how female board interlocks are considered in previous research on gender diversity on boards.

Design/methodology/approach: A systematic literature review was conducted. It comprised 71 highly cited articles. The articles were analyzed to grasp their content, and specifically, female influence in the boardroom related to power.

Findings: The literature review reveals that the interlock perspective is rare in studies on women's board representation. This is so, even while evidence is provided that females often need companions to get their meanings across on the boards, despite how interlocks would create one link of such power, and although the literature points to how female board representation plays a part to explain performance, social responsibilities and overall strategic directions of firms.

Originality/value: Contributions are made to previous research by indicating the potential of further research in a largely neglected area of research while also summarizing the previous reporting on women on boards.

    Questioning the no-touch discourse in physical education from a children's rights perspective2017Inngår i: Sport, Education and Society, ISSN 1357-3322, E-ISSN 1470-1243, Vol. 22, nr 3, s. 305-320Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper we question the rationality of ‘no–touch policies’ and offer an alternative approach to the matter of physical contact between teachers and students in the context of physical education in schools. Earlier research has drawn attention to how a discourse of child protection is starting to affect how physical contact is viewed in physical education (PE) practice. The avoidance of intergenerational touch is increasingly justified by referring to the children’s rights agenda. Here, arguments for ‘no-touching’ are linked to children’s right to be protected from harm. In the paper we explore a children’s rights based viewpoint that supports the use of and need for physical contact in PE teaching by developing theoretical and practice based arguments. An alternative children’s rights perspective, based on rights theorising, is used to formulate the theoretical argument. Interviews with 16 PE teachers about their experiences of physical contact in their pedagogical work form the practice-based arguments. The two arguments provide a way of looking at intergenerational touch in education from the vantage point of children’s human right to develop to their full potential, which can support a need for physical touch in pedagogical situations.

Feel good—be good: subject content and governing processes in physical education2008Inngår i: Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy, ISSN 1740-8989, E-ISSN 1742-5786, Vol. 13, nr 4, s. 365-379Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Background: In this paper a study of both subject content and governing processes in Swedish physical education is presented. The reason why an analysis of both content and processes is of special interest is that it makes it possible to understand the encounter between the institutional level and the practice of education.

Purpose: The purpose of the paper is threefold: (1) to analyse the subject content in physical education through identifying discourses embedded in its practice; (2) to illustrate how the subject content is created/re-created in physical education practice through various governing processes; and (3) to discuss how governing processes also become content through the

socialization of students in terms of becoming a certain type of social citizen.

Research design and data collection: The empirical material used is collected in connection with a national evaluation of physical education in Sweden, commissioned by the Swedish Government and the Swedish National Agency for Education. This paper uses local curriculum documents from 72 schools and 15 video-recorded physical education lessons from five schools. A starting point for the methodological framework is discourse theory and the governing perspective developed by Michel Foucault (1978/1991, 1980, 1982/2002). The governing perspective is used as a methodological tool, and we work with two overarching analysis themes: one oriented towards what pupils are governed, in terms of discourses embedded in physical education, and the other how the identified discourses are created/re-created in the practice of physical education. We also use the methodological framework as a tool to discuss how the governing processes also become content—a content of socialization.

Findings: The results show that physical exertion and active participation are the main threads that run though the analysed material. In connection with physical exertion and active participation, pupils are also encouraged to cooperate with others and to compete. The content of socialization is primarily directed towards different components of willingness, for example a will to do one’s best and a will to try, where the pupils are expected to be participatory, take responsibility and govern their own actions in the direction of that which is most reasonable.

Conclusions: A clear message is communicated in physical education in Sweden—be active and work up a sweat. This is also concerned with fostering good character, i.e. creating correct attitudes and approaches through physical activity—be an active and willing person. Physical education is consequently a place where both political volition and the creation of today’s citizens are staged. It is thus not only physical exertion—the physiological effects of exercise and involvement in sports and physical education—that is in the foreground of the activities we study in physical education. It is also about becoming a certain type of social citizen.

    Abstract [sv]

Students' Development of Phronesis in Culinary Arts Higher Education in Sweden2020Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Bildung is included in the educational philosophies of manyNordic universities, but there is so far little research on bildungwithin the discipline of Culinary Arts. Sustainable development ispartly a matter of phronesis, and can thus be explored bybildung. Identifying the characteristics of personal experiences ofbildung can bring light to key factors for a better understandingof how Culinary Arts education can act in the environmentalmovement.

Aristotle distinguished between verifiable theoretical knowledge, episteme, and judgeable practical wisdom, phronesis. However, phronesis is rarely in focus when higher education addressescritical societal issues such as sustainable development. Futuresocietal challenges will make it necessary to further stimulate thelearning of phronesis alongside the already well-establishedlearning of epistemic knowledge.Transformative learning is a pedagogical approach which can beaddressed by gastronomers in quest of sustainability. Based onhow epistemic knowledge corresponds with practical skills andartistic endeavor, Culinary Arts education can provide favorableconditions for phronesis to be learned by bildung.

This research project aims to explore how a greater emphasis onbildung can address societal issues in the higher education ofCulinary Arts. The aim of this particular case study is to put lighton students' experiences of phronesis in a bachelor’s course. In the course Development of Meal Experiences, 15 ECTScredits, the assignment is to develop, arrange and evaluate ameal on behalf of an external client, where sustainability isintended be a key approach to the work.

Data was collected through narrative methods. 30 students keptself-reflective logbooks throughout a 10-week-long bachelor’scourse, and additionally in-depth narrative interviews wereconducted with students after the course. The material wastranscribed and will be interpreted by using a phenomenologicalhermeneutic method. Two follow-up interviews with the samerespondents will take place, at the end of the bachelor’s programas well as six months afterwards.

For this study’s expected results, we will look for thesituations and moods in which students had their strongestexperiences of understanding sustainability from a, to them, new point of view. That is, we will explore the characteristicsof such eye-opening moments which has been shown crucialfor how phronesis is developed by bildung.

    Using dialogue to express memories from a meal designer’s gastronomic professional practice2021Inngår i: FORMakademisk, ISSN 1890-9515, E-ISSN 1890-9515, Vol. 14, nr 2, s. 1-19Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

A meal consists of both tangible and intangible dimensions. Menus and photos may be the only documentation from a meal, but experiences are rarely saved beyond memory. The aim of this study is to design a method for documenting intangible aspects of the professional experience of a meal craftsman, based on the memories associated with the files in an archive. By sorting the archive according to a specific process of documentation we managed to revive and document also the intangible aspects of these meals. In order to access the intangible aspects, a version of the Socratic method of dialogue was developed and used. This is exemplified by a case. The dialogues reunited intangible aspects from the memories of the designer, such as motives and drivers, with the tangible archive documents.

    Abstract [en]

In a meal, there is a special sort of correspondence between diverse functions of knowledge taking place, a correspondence which also connects participants of the meal to a wider societal context. The interdisciplinary academic discipline of Culinary Arts and Meal Science (CAMS) at Örebro University can be described as thematically demarcated, with the meal as its main theme, justifying a broad scientific approach. In this article we shed light on how the philosophy of science of CAMS has developed during the discipline’s first three decades of existence. Starting out from a point of view of three separate forms of knowledge: science, artistic endeavor and practical skills, we see a development towards a point of view of three corresponding functions of knowledge: episteme, techne and phronesis. In this paper, we argue that an interdisciplinary discipline calls for such a correspondent, or functional, point of view. Our thesis is that such an approach points towards a greater methodological focus, which is also beneficial for highlighting how the outcome of CAMS is about knowing together in correspondence with the wider societal context. We illustrate how these functions are active by presenting a model. The analysis is based on examples from the academic activities of CAMS during the last three decades. We conclude that CAMS has the potential to be particularly strong as a social force in educating competence and skills and judgments and approach. The latter, also known as phronesis or bildung, encompasses important ethical, sustainable and conscious dimensions. These are competences that are particularly significant in order to meet the challenges of today’s and tomorrow’s society. Therefore, we argue for the social importance of meal research for societal knowing together, and for the meal as an operative stage for bildung.

Gastronomy: An Overlooked Arena for the Cultivation of Sustainable Meaning?2023Inngår i: Challenges, E-ISSN 2078-1547, Vol. 14, nr 4, s. 1-20Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This article explores sustainable development from a gastronomic perspective. Humanistic perspectives on food offered by gastronomy are explored as an asset in cultivating self-awareness capacities needed for sustainable transformations of society. The purpose is to explore how gastronomes can cultivate understandings and explanations of sustainability to be conveyed to individuals via meals. In semi-annually recurring dialogic interviews, four university-educated gastronomes cultivated their understandings and explanations of sustainability, and modeled how these could be communicated to other individuals. The dialogues gradually brought the ideas of the researcher and the participants toward a common explanation of the potential ways gastronomic competency could advance sustainable development. The results highlight two ways of understanding gastronomic sustainability: functionally as practical communication, and formally as a cultural issue. Based on H.G. Gadamer’s idea of bildung as hermeneutic interpretation, we argue that self-awareness is a process which is rooted in how knowledge is interpreted, understood, and explained by the individual. Practical participation in culturally influenced meals makes gastronomy a bridge between individual and societal issues, whereby gastronomic competencies can cultivate sustainable commitment, judgment, and community. In this way, gastronomic sustainability represents an approach to sustainable development that, significantly, also involves the cultivation of sustainable meaning.

Pathways in end-of-life care for older people: care managers' reasoning2008Inngår i: International Journal of Palliative Nursing, ISSN 1357-6321, E-ISSN 2052-286X, Vol. 14, nr 9, s. 420-425Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Seven care managers employed by a large municipality in Sweden were interviewed concerning their reasoning regarding end-of-life care for older people. Data were analyzed using a hermeneutic approach. The results showed that end-of-life care was considered to constitute a small part of the care managers’ work and was something they did not focus on in general when assessing care needs. Two different pathways to death – the natural and the medical – were identified. In the natural pathway, death was invisible and the care was more routine-oriented. In the medical pathway, death was visualised and the care more individualised. Neither of the pathways paid attention to communication or existential needs. Thus, there is a need for a palliative pathway to death based on the philosophy of palliative care, which could provide guidance for care managers and promote opportunities for older people to achieve a dignified dying and death.
