Video information prior to cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging improves patient experience which still remains more challenging than in myocardial perfusion scintigraphy2017Inngår i: Abstract Proceedings from the 20th Annual SCMR Scientific Sessions, Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (SCMR) , 2017Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) and myocardial perfusion scintigraphy (MPS) are two technically advanced methods for imaging cardiac diseases. Although CMR is considered to be painless, considerable patient cooperation is necessary during scanning. Some patients may experience anxiety because of the closed environment of the procedure.

The aims of this paper were to evaluate the potential effect on patient anxiety and on motion artefacts by adding a 5 min video sequence to the standard written information given before CMR. Additionally, the patient experience of CMR was compared to that of MPS.

Methods: The sample (n=146) consisted of 97 patients randomized to receive either video information in addition to standard written information (CMR-video/n=49) or standard written information alone (CMR-standard/n=48). A third group undergoing MPS (n=51) was used to compare CMR-standard and MPS. Anxiety was evaluated before, immediately after the procedure and one week later. Four questionnaires were used: State-Trait-Anxiety Inventory, Hospital-Anxiety and Depression-scale, MRI-Fear-Survey-Schedule and the MRI-Anxiety-Questionnaire (MRI-AQ). Motion artefacts were evaluated by three observers, blinded to the information given. Motion artefacts due to arrhythmia were not considered.

Results: Measured with MRI-AQ, the CMR-video and the CMR-standard groups did not score significantly different on the factor Anxiety. However, CMR-video scored lower (=better) in the factor Relaxation (p=0.039). Younger patients and women scored a higher level of anxiety in most scales. Anxiety levels (MRI-AQ) were lower during MPS examinations compared to the CMRstandard group (p < 0.001 ). The presence of motion artefacts was similar in the CMR-video compared to the CMR-standard group.

Conclusions: Patient ability to relax during CMR increased by adding video information prior to the exam. This positive effect on patient experience is important to enable technologists to obtain full patient cooperation. An apparent lack of effect on motion artefact could possibly be due to the addition of compensatory extra scans when a low image quality was recognized by the technologists.

An echo-planar imaging sequence is superior to a steady-state free precession sequence for visual as well as quantitative assessment of cardiac magnetic resonance stress perfusion2017Inngår i: Clinical Physiology and Functional Imaging, ISSN 1475-0961, E-ISSN 1475-097X, Vol. 37, nr 1, s. 52-61Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

BACKGROUND: To assess myocardial perfusion, steady-state free precession cardiac magnetic resonance (SSFP, CMR) was compared with gradient-echo-echo-planar imaging (GRE-EPI) using myocardial perfusion scintigraphy (MPS) as reference.

METHODS: Cardiac magnetic resonance perfusion was recorded in 30 patients with SSFP and in another 30 patients with GRE-EPI. Timing and extent of inflow delay to the myocardium was visually assessed. Signal-to-noise (SNR) and contrast-to-noise (CNR) ratios were calculated. Myocardial scar was visualized with a phase-sensitive inversion recovery sequence (PSIR). All scar positive segments were considered pathologic. In MPS, stress and rest images were used as in clinical reporting. The CMR contrast wash-in slope was calculated and compared with the stress score from the MPS examination. CMR scar, CMR perfusion and MPS were assessed separately by one expert for each method who was blinded to other aspects of the study.

RESULTS: Visual assessment of CMR had a sensitivity for the detection of an abnormal MPS at 78% (SSFP) versus 91% (GRE-EPI) and a specificity of 58% (SSFP) versus 84% (GRE-EPI). Kappa statistics for SSFP and MPS was 0·29, for GRE-EPI and MPS 0·72. The ANOVA of CMR perfusion slopes for all segments versus MPS score (four levels based on MPS) had correlation r = 0·64 (SSFP) and r = 0·96 (GRE-EPI). SNR was for normal segments 35·63 ± 11·80 (SSFP) and 17·98 ± 8·31 (GRE-EPI), while CNR was 28·79 ± 10·43 (SSFP) and 13·06 ± 7·61 (GRE-EPI).

CONCLUSION: GRE-EPI displayed higher agreement with the MPS results than SSFP despite significantly lower signal intensity, SNR and CNR.

Development and validation of a questionnaire evaluating patient anxiety during Magnetic Resonance Imaging: the Magnetic Resonance Imaging- Anxiety Questionnaire (MRI-AQ)2016Inngår i: Journal of Advanced Nursing, ISSN 0309-2402, E-ISSN 1365-2648, Vol. 72, nr 6, s. 1368-1380Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Aim: To develop and validate a new instrument measuring patient anxiety during Magnetic Resonance Imaging examinations, Magnetic Resonance Imaging-Anxiety Questionnaire.

Background: Questionnaires measuring patients’ anxiety during Magnetic Resonance Imaging examinations have been the same as used in a wide range of conditions. To learn about patients’ experience during examination and to evaluate interventions, a specific questionnaire measuring patient anxiety during Magnetic Resonance Imaging is needed.

Design: Psychometric cross-sectional study with test-retest design.

Methods: A new questionnaire, Magnetic Resonance Imaging-Anxiety Questionnaire, was designed from patient expressions of anxiety in Magnetic Resonance Imagingscanners. The sample was recruited between October 2012–October 2014. Factor structure was evaluated with exploratory factor analysis and internal consistency with Cronbach’s alpha. Criterion-related validity, known-group validity and test-retest was calculated.

Results: Patients referred for Magnetic Resonance Imaging of either the spine or the heart, were invited to participate. The development and validation of Magnetic Resonance Imaging-Anxiety Questionnaire resulted in 15 items consisting of two factors. Cronbach’s alpha was found to be high. Magnetic Resonance Imaging-Anxiety Questionnaire correlated higher with instruments measuring anxiety than with depression scales. Known-group validity demonstrated a higher level of anxiety for patients undergoing Magnetic Resonance Imaging scan of the heart than for those examining the spine. Test-retest reliability demonstrated acceptable level for the scale.

Conclusion: Magnetic Resonance Imaging-Anxiety Questionnaire bridges a gap among existing questionnaires, making it a simple and useful tool for measuring patient anxiety during Magnetic Resonance Imaging examinations.

    Abstract [en]

This dissertation is about post-divorce families. The central question is how family is constructed after divorce. The aim is to study how family relationships are negotiated, transformed and reproduced after the separation. The research is based on 24 in-depth interviews with twelve young adults, between the ages of 21 and 29, with divorced parents. Their narratives about their families are analysed using a theoretical framework inspired by the individualization theories (Beck & Beck-Gernsheim 2001; Giddens 1997, 1995) and the doing family perspective (Morgan 1996; Silva & Smart 1999a), especially focusing on the concepts of negotiation and family practices. More specific questions raised in the dissertation are how are family boundaries drawn by the young adults? How do the interviewees understand the new organization of their families, which has been renegotiated after the separation? What perception of motherhood and fatherhood can be found in the narratives? And, finally, to what extent are family relationships after divorce negotiated in the way that the individualization theories claim?

The results show a quite complex picture of family life after divorce. While both parents are often described as participating parents, the family practices after divorce appear clearly gendered. The mother’s involvement in taking care of the child seems not to be negotiable in the same way as the father’s. Hence, motherhood appears natural and taken for granted to a much greater extent than fatherhood. The negotiations between the parents after divorce can be of both an explicit and implicit character according to the narratives, but yet another kind of negotiation are the indirect negotiations. In these negotiations, the child is used as a go-between or carrier, a position that seems to limit their own possibility to participate in the decision making. Another aspect that seems to diminish children’s participation is the principle of loyalty to both their biological parents. The results also show that the children’s living arrangements after divorce are characterized by changes and renegotiations rather than being permanent. The parents’ new partners are described in different ways in the narratives, however, they are often seen as turning points that have a major influence on the family relationships. The nuclear family as a normative ideal is present in all the interviews but in different ways. While some express an explicit critique of it, others regard it as something that they want for themselves in the future. What constitutes a family according to the narratives? Firstly, blood ties and formal relationships are pointed out. Secondly, the feeling of solidarity and closeness is viewed perhaps as the most evident element of family life. This feeling can be created by open communication as well as by spending time together on a regular basis. Thirdly, growing up together and/or sharing everyday life practices are also considered as vital to develop and maintain close family ties. This means that the family boundaries after divorce are renegotiated over time rather than permanent. These negotiations take place in a certain context, where gender norms, earlier experiences and other social relationships play an important role.

Actualizing the 'democratic family'?: Swedish policy rhetoric versus family practices2008Inngår i: Social Politics: International Studies in Gender, State and Society, ISSN 1072-4745, E-ISSN 1468-2893, Vol. 15, nr 1, s. 79-100Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In this article, we examine empirically a key element of individualization theory—the democratic family. We do so using the “acid test” of family policy, and family practice, in Sweden. First, we review the progress of family policy in Sweden since the 1960s, which has expressly promoted an agenda of gender equality and democracy in families, with individual autonomy for both adults and children as one key element. We then turn to family practice, looking particularly at negotiation and adult equality, lifelong parenting after separation, and children's autonomy. While Swedish policy makers and shapers seem to have developed the idea of the democratic family long before the sociologist Anthony Giddens, the results in practice have been more ambivalent. While there has been change, there is more adaptation to pre-existing gender and generational norms.

FENOMENET MED DEN KVINNLIGA STRAFFRABATTEN2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Analysis of discrete multi-unit, common value auctions: a study of three sealed-bid mechanismsManuskript (preprint) (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This paper proposes a discrete bidding model for both quantities and pricing. It has a two-unit demand environment where subjects bid for contracts with an unknown redemption value, common to all bidders. Prior to bidding, the bidders receive private signals of information on the (common) value. The value and the signals are drawn from a known discrete affiliated joint distribution. The relevant task for the paper is to compare the equilibrium strategies and the seller’s revenue of three auction formats. We find that, of the three auctionformats below with two players, the discriminatory auction always gives the largest revenue to the seller; both the uniform and the Vickrey auction have zero revenue equilibrium strategies that put them further down in the revenue ranking. In equilibrium, bidders bid the same amount on both items in the discriminatory auction; a phenomenon not noted in either of the other auction formats.

Multi-unit common value auctions: a laboratory experiment with three sealed-bid mechansimsManuskript (preprint) (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This study addresses a discrete common value environment with independent (one-dimensional) private signals, where the seller offers two identical units and the buyers have (flat) demand for both. Each session is conducted with2, 3 or 4 buyers. Three auction formats are used: the discriminatory, uniformand Vickrey auctions which are all subjected to a variation in the number of bidders and to repeating bid rounds on each subject. The main findings are that there are no significant differences between the uniform and the discriminatory auction in collecting revenue, while the Vickrey auction comes out as inferior. More bidders in the auction result in a greater revenue and level out the performance across the mechanisms. Demand reduction is visible in the experiment, but it is not as prominent as anticipated. Moreover, subjects come closer to equilibrium play over time. Finally, the winner’s curse is less severe than what is reported for inexperienced bidders in other studies.

Multi-unit common value auctions: an experimental comparison between the static and the dynamic uniform auctionManuskript (preprint) (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

It is still an open question whether the dynamic or the static format should be used in multi-unit settings, in a uniform price auction. The present study conducts an economic experiment in a common value environment, where it is found that it is more a question of whether the auctioneer wants to facilitate price discovery, and thereby lessen the otherwise pervasive overbidding, or if only the revenue is important. The experiment in the present paper provides evidence that the static format gives a significantly greater revenue than the dynamic auction, in both small and large group sizes. But a higher revenue comes at a cost; half of the auctions in the static format yield negative profits to the bidders, the winner’s curse is more severely widespread in the static auction, and only a minority of the bidders use the equilibrium bidding strategy.

Multi-unit common value auctions: theory and experiments2012Doktoravhandling, med artikler (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Research on auctions that involve more than one identical item for sale was, almost non-existing in the 90’s, but has since then been getting increasing attention. External incentives for this research have come from the US spectrum, sales, the European 3G mobile-phone auctions,  and Internet auctions. The policy relevance and the huge amount of money involved in many of them have helped the theory and experimental research advance. But in auctions where values are equal across bidders, common value auctions, that is, when the value depends on some outside parameter, equal to all bidders, the research is still embryonic.

This thesis contributes to the topic with three studies. The first uses a Bayesian game to model a simple multi-unit common value auction, the task being to compare equilibrium strategies and the seller’s revenue from three auction formats; the discriminatory, the uniform and the Vickrey auction. The second study conducts an economic laboratory experiment on basis of the first study. The third study comprises an experiment on the multi-unit common value uniform auction and compares the dynamic and the static environments of this format.

The most salient result in both experiments is that subjects overbid. They are victims of the winner’s curse and bid above the expected value, thus earning a negative profit. There is some learning, but most bidders continue to earn a negative profit also in later rounds. The competitive effect when participating in an auction seems to be stronger than the rationality concerns. In the first experiment, subjects in the Vickrey auction do somewhat better in small groups than subjects in the other auction types and, in the second experiment, subjects in the dynamic auction format perform much better than subjects in the static auction format; but still, they overbid.

Due to this overbidding, the theoretical (but not the behavioral) prediction that the dynamic auction should render more revenue than the static fails inthe second experiment. Nonetheless, the higher revenue of the static auction comes at a cost; half of the auctions yield negative profits to the bidders, and the winner’s curse is more severely widespread in this format. Besides, only a minority of the bidders use the equilibrium bidding strategy. The bottom line is that the choice between the open and sealed-bid formats may be more important than the choice of price mechanism, especially in common value settings.

This bachelor thesis examines how the Swedish-French television series Midnight Sun portrays its Sámi characters. The series sparked a lot of debate following its airing due to some of the characterisations. Due to the history of racism that Sámis have faced and continue to face, it is important to analyse contemporary depictions in order to identify how racist preconceptions are being reproduced. The study aims to problematise the connotations of colonialist discourse and processes of othering and mystification that the Sámi characters are subjected to, while also examining whether the depictions play into established Sámi stereotypes.

Based in previous research of indigenous representations in dominant media and the theories of postcolonialism and Encoding/Decoding, the study employs a critical discourse analysis to examine the discursive messages that are embedded in the characterisations. As source material for the analysis, the series Midnight Sun was used in its entirety. Character traits, actions and narrative arcs of the Sámi characters provide the analysis’ foundation, which are then situated in historical and contemporary Sámi struggles and a postcolonial framework in order to discuss how the viewer is led to understand the character as a result of decoding. The study shows that the characterisations have clearly subverted the traditional stereotypical images associated with Sámis. Furthermore, the series explicitly depicts the racism that Sámis face in their everyday lives. The series serves as a reflection that the discussion and

understanding of Sámi life and culture is changing. However, despite the series’ conscious attempts to nuance the Sámi image, it ultimately falls into a number of discursive pitfalls. Several Sámi characters are othered, depicted as social deviants or mystical remnants of a lost culture. Implicit binary structures of “us” and “them” can also be inferred in the traits of the Sámi and non-Sámi characters. The series echoes colonial discourses in which the dominant society is presented as a more sophisticated counterpart. This study, in conjunction with the ongoing shift in public perception, can hopefully lead to further study of Sámi representations and their discursive nature.

    Abstract [en]

This exam is about how preschool teachers establish a relationship with children in age one to five years old, in their reception to Swedish preschool. To limit the area the exam illustrates how preschool teachers describe their work in how to create a meaningful relationship in reception throughout the attachment theory. It also focuses on how their work influence the adjustment with the children into the preschool environment. The main aim with the study is to reach knowledge on how preschool teachers view their work with children in their reception, and its importance to children’s attachment and establishing a relationship with the preschool teacher. With a qualitative method three interviews with preschool teachers have been done to answer the main question of the study. The result of the study shows that preschools teachers value children to feel safe before they establish a relationship. It also demonstrates that parents have to feel secure in leaving their children in the preschool for the child to feel safe, and be able to develop a relationship with the preschool teachers and other children. The study gives us knowledge that preschool teachers have the full responsibility to establish - and keep to establish - a relationship to the children throughout their whole visit in preschool. Through the attachment theory the described work in reception confirms how safeness with the child is important to be able to establish a relationship before and during the reception.

"Vart skulle de annars ta vägen?": Gymnasieelevers attityder till invandring2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to examine young adults', 18-19 years old, attitudes towards corporal punishment and with the help of social constructionism, grid-group theory and relevant concepts analyze the results and compare it with previous research. The research questions introduce various factors such as gender, origin and personal experiences of corporal punishment that may affect the attitudes. In order to fulfill the purpose and answer the research questions, a quantitative research method has been selected. There was 118 participants in the survey. The study was conducted by means of surveys in high schools in Örebro. Social constructionism made us realize how the community, perceptions and expectations might influence attitudes. Grid-group theory gave us an insight into how different family structures may explain why attitudes toward corporal punishment of children differ between individuals. One of the conclusions of this study is that the long-term trend of decreasing positive attitudes toward corporal punishment seems to continue. Results show that all of 41, 2% of young adults in our study, with parents born outside the Nordic countries, have been subjected to corporal punishment. Personal experiences and parents' origin has been shown to have effects on attitudes towards corporal punishment. Different family structures and attitudes towards child rearing may be important to understand and take into consideration in social work. The study shows that corporal punishment still exists, which makes the topic worth of attention and we recommend it to be studied further.

Auricular acupuncture for substance use: a randomized controlled trial of effects on anxiety, sleep, drug use and use of addiction treatment services2016Inngår i: Substance Abuse Treatment, Prevention, and Policy, ISSN 1747-597X, E-ISSN 1747-597X, Vol. 11, nr 1, artikkel-id 24Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Background: A common alternative treatment for substance abuse is auricular acupuncture. The aim of the study was to evaluate the short and long-term effect of auricular acupuncture on anxiety, sleep, drug use and addiction treatment utilization in adults with substance abuse.

Method: Of the patients included, 280 adults with substance abuse and psychiatric comorbidity, 80 were randomly assigned to auricular acupuncture according to the NADA protocol, 80 to auricular acupuncture according to a local protocol (LP), and 120 to relaxation (controls). The primary outcomes anxiety (Beck Anxiety Inventory; BAI) and insomnia (Insomnia Severity Index; ISI) were measured at baseline and at follow-ups 5 weeks and 3 months after the baseline assessment. Secondary outcomes were drug use and addiction service utilization. Complete datasets regarding BAI/ISI were obtained from 37/34 subjects in the NADA group, 28/28 in the LP group and 36/35 controls. Data were analyzed using Chi-square, Analysis of Variance, Kruskal Wallis, Repeated Measures Analysis of Variance, Eta square (η(2)), and Wilcoxon Signed Ranks tests.

Results: Participants in NADA, LP and control group improved significantly on the ISI and BAI. There was no significant difference in change over time between the three groups in any of the primary (effect size: BAI, η(2) = 0.03, ISI, η(2) = 0.05) or secondary outcomes. Neither of the two acupuncture treatments resulted in differences in sleep, anxiety or drug use from the control group at 5 weeks or 3 months.

Conclusion: No evidence was found that acupuncture as delivered in this study is more effective than relaxation for problems with anxiety, sleep or substance use or in reducing the need for further addiction treatment in patients with substance use problems and comorbid psychiatric disorders. The substantial attrition at follow-up is a main limitation of the study.

Trial registration: Clinical Trials NCT02604706 (retrospectively registered).

If it Bleeds it Leads: An interview study and a discourse analysis of crime reporting in South African Radio2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The primary purpose of this thesis was to examine, by in depth-interviews, how reporters and news editors in four regional radio stations in South Africa perceive themselves to carry out the role as a credible news source in terms of crime reporting. In addition, the thesis had two secondary purposes. One purpose was to examine, by a discourse analysis, how online news are constructed discursively. Also, one purpose was to examine the relationship between the radio and the police. Finally, the study examined how perceptions on crime reporting differed from commercial radio stations to community radio stations. The aim was to reveal radio’s potential to practice journalistic ideals in a developing democracy where media in the context of freedom of expression is relatively new.

The theoretical framework in the thesis focused on media and democracy development in emerging democracies in general and in South Africa, in particular. Theories of journalistic ideals were used to investigate the values that media proclaim to follow in their daily work. Also, theories of crime reporting and news criteria were explored to stress the external and internal variables that influence the agenda of crime reporting.

Results show that as crime is so common in South Africa crime is no longer considered as news. Also, crime is not a criterion in itself but has to meet other criteria as well such as a certain level of drama and violence. As a result, the radio stations in this study prioritize crimes that are violent and sensationalistic. Furthermore, the information on crime comes from several sources but the reporters in this study tend to perceive the information from the police spokesperson as most reliable and valid. In addition, the discourse analysis confirms this result as six of eight articles origin from the police. The results further showed that there are no differences between the community radio stations and the commercial radio stations in terms of how they approach crime. However, the discourse analysis shows that the commercial radio stations more often used the police as the main source in their articles. Still, it is the focus of the radio station that determines the differences. Also, it is the journalistic rules and the traditional perception of how news should be constructed discursively that determine the design of news. Moreover, the reporters in this study have not experienced pressure from external sources while covering a story. In addition, it is unusual that the respondents experience risks in their job and the radio reporters claims to be unaffected by external pressure. The relationship between the police and the reporters is perceived to be good.

Conclusively, the radio stations in this study do not counteract to the divided society in South Africa as they are emphasizing some crimes more than others which strengthens the perception of who commits the crime, who the victims are and what crimes that should be perceived as more important. As the radio stations have a heavy coverage of crime in their news bulletins crime has become a normalization which can reinforce a fear among the public. Also, the reporters believe that they are not reflecting everyone’s reality. As a result, the discursive sphere is slowly fading as commercial interest determines the news agenda.

Sensual and sexual marital contentment in parents of small children: a follow-up study when the first child is four years old2008Inngår i: Journal of Sex Research, ISSN 0022-4499, E-ISSN 1559-8519, Vol. 45, nr 3, s. 295-304Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This follow-up study explored parents' (N=452) intimate relationships when their firstborn child was 6 months old and then 4 years later. The measurement used was a modified version of the Dyadic Adjustment Scale, DAS. The present results show that most parents responding were content sensually at 6 months postpartum in 2002 and 4 years later, in 2006. More parents had changed from being sensually content in 2002 to discontent in 2006, than the contrary, however, and the sexual contentment remained low. The average sexual frequency was low both at 6 months and at 4 years for both parents with and without additional children. Experiencing tiredness as a hindrance to having sex was perceived as a greater problem among those parents without additional children. Prospective regression analyses indicated that sexuality was significantly related to both sensual and sexual contentment 4 years later. Sexuality was also one of the most significant covariates in the cross-sectional regression analysis for sensual contentment. Since sexuality plays a central role in partner well-being, it may be an important target for helping parents with small children.

    Attitudes and beliefs directed towards ready-meal consumption2004Inngår i: Food Service Technology, ISSN 1471-5732, E-ISSN 1471-5740, Vol. 4, nr 4, s. 159-169Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Our food choice is dependent upon our beliefs about both the products and those who consume them. In this study beliefs about the prototypical attributes of ready meal consumers have been investigated to establish which beliefs exist and whether they have any actual basis when compared with self-reported behaviours of ready meal consumers. In a survey, respondents described what they considered to be common attributes of ready meal consumers. Some of these attributes were supported by the data provided by the ready meal consuming respondents, while many were not. Most interesting was the fact that two frequently mentioned attributes, being alone and no interest in cooking or food, were confirmed by the ready meal consuming respondents in the actual eating situation but not by their life-style and beliefs in general. The results support the call for more situation-oriented food research.

Buyers’ demands for ready meals: influenced by gender and who will eat them2006Inngår i: Journal of Foodservice, ISSN 1748-0140, Vol. 17, nr 5-6, s. 205-211Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The ready-meal market in Sweden is increasing rapidly, and in the last 10 years has nearly doubled. The aim of this study was to gain a better understanding of the demand buyers have for ready meals, both when buying for themselves and for others. A postal survey was completed by 249 residents of Gothenburg, Sweden. Results show that the demand when buying ready meals is dependent on both gender and whether or not the buyer is the end consumer. In general, the buyers' demands for sensory and convenience aspects were the most important. Female respondents were more demanding buyers than males, and their priorities were different. The implications of the findings are that foodservice operators and producers of ready meals must pay attention to the different demands of buyers, their gender and who will be the end consumer.
