Desorganiserad anknytning - finns det möjlighet till förbättring? Faktorer som kan påverka förändringsprocessen2016Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [ja]

Strävan efter jämställdhet: En studie om medvetenhet kring jämställdhet inom Eskilstuna kommun2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to see how aware employees in a management in Eskilstuna municipality was about the gender equality targets in the city's own policy document on gender equality. A Web-based survey was implemented in which 130 questionnaires were sent out. Respondents have been responding to various queries around the policy document and they have given suggestions for improvement. A quantitative method has been chosen and analyzed the material from the theoretical perspective around social constructivism and previous research. Previous research has shown that it can be difficult to implement a plan of action or a policy document in large organizations in a satisfactory way. The result of the survey shows that few of the respondents are aware of the document and only a few have read it and are aware of the goals that are posted.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate the experience regarding the situation of immigrant parents to disabled children with personal assistance in Sweden. This study is based on a qualitative method in which interviews have been carried out with parents, administrators of the act on support and service to certain impaired persons (LSS) and representatives of personal assistance providers. This study also aims to investigate the experiences of the Swedish welfare system, by examining different perspectives regarding disability, the encounter with authorities, the consequences of personal assistance and the role of personal assistance providers. The data obtained by the interviews have been analyzed by using an intersectional method and theoretical concepts of social exclusion and inclusion. The results show that immigrant parents experience more difficulties in obtaining the social support that they are entitled to, because of language barriers and insufficient knowledge about the welfare system. The study also shows that immigrant parents to disabled children risk an increased vulnerability in society, in which the vulnerabilities of being an immigrant but also being a parent to a disabled child, strengthen each other and increase the complexity of their situation. The result suggests that the system regarding personal assistance is complicated. On one hand the system can help parents to obtain help for their children but on the other hand creates a risk of excluding them from society, for example by having family members to care for their children which can lead towards exclusion from the regular labour market.

Skolpersonals arbete med Friendsprogrammet En programteoretisk analys 2016Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Mothers’ opinions on being asked about exposure to intimate partner violence in child healthcare centres in Sweden2018In: Journal of Child Health Care, ISSN 1367-4935, E-ISSN 1741-2889, Vol. 22, no 2, p. 228-237Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Intimate partner violence (IPV) constitutes a hidden health risk for exposed mothers and children. In Sweden, screening for IPV in healthcare has only been routine during pregnancy, despite an increase in IPV following childbirth. The arguments against routine questions postpartum have concerned a lack of evidence of beneficial effects as well as fear of stigmatizing women or placing abused women at further risk. Increased understanding of women’s attitudes to routine questions may allay these fears. In this study, 198 mothers in 12 child healthcare centres (CHCs) filled in a short questionnaire about their exposure and received information on IPV at a regular baby check-up visit. The mothers’ lifetime prevalence of exposure to IPV was 16%. One hundred and twenty-eight mothers participated in a telephone interview, giving their opinion on the screening experience. The intervention was well-received by most of the mothers who reported that questions and information on IPV are essential for parents, considering the health risks for children, and that the CHC is a natural arena for this. Necessary prerequisites were that questioning be routine to avoid stigmatizing and be offered in privacy without the partner being present.

Patterns of engagement in young children with and without developmental delay2006In: Journal of Policy and Practice in Intellectual Disabilities, ISSN 1741-1122, E-ISSN 1741-1130, Vol. 3, no 1, p. 65-75Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to identify patterns of process characteristics capturing the essence of children's experiences in their natural environment and their possible association with health and well-being operationalized as engagement for young children with and without developmental delay. Data were gathered from 1035 children between 1 and 3 years in community-based preschools. Teachers and parents responded to questionnaires concerning interaction, activity, and engagement, as well as demographic and biopsychosocial information. A cluster analysis was conducted to find homogenous patterns related to engagement. Five distinct patterns were identified, all related to different levels of engagement. Several factors, within both the child and the environment, were associated with high levels of engagement. Interaction skills and availability of activities appear to be strong predictors of high-level engagement, regardless whether or not the child has been identified as developmentally delayed.

Participation in school environment of children and youth with disabilities: a person-oriented approach2005In: Scandinavian Journal of Psychology, ISSN 0036-5564, E-ISSN 1467-9450, Vol. 46, no 3, p. 305-314Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study investigated patterns of interrelated positive subject and environmental factors related to participation in school activities of pupils with different kinds of disabilities. Questionnaires concerning participation were collected from 472 pupils with disabilities and their teachers, parents and special education consultants. A person-oriented approach with the aim to identify patterns of variables related to a high degree of participation of pupils with disabilities was used. Cluster-groups were formed based on scores for individual subjects on factors identified as important for participation. Groups with a high degree of participation were characterized by high scores in autonomy and perceived interaction with peers and teachers and an internal locus of control. Type and degree of disability did not predict cluster group membership. A conclusion is that the outcome participation is better predicted by patterns of interrelated positive subject and environmental factors than by type of disability or any other single factor.

    'I can play!': Young children's perceptions of health2006In: Pediatric Rehabilitation, ISSN 1363-8491, E-ISSN 1464-5270, Vol. 9, no 3, p. 275-284Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Health is today viewed as a multi-dimensional concept partly conceptualized independent from not being ill. The aim of this study was to gain knowledge of how young children perceive health. Interviews were conducted with 68 children (4–5 years), within their pre-school setting, with the help of a semi-structured interview guide. A multi-dimensional perspective represented by the health dimensions of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) was used in a manifest deductive content analysis. The children's statements were categorized and placed under one of the four health dimensions, body, activity, participation and environment. A latent content analysis was applied to identify underlying themes in the manifest categories. The results revealed that young children perceive health as a multi-dimensional construct, largely related to being engaged, i.e. to be able to perform wanted activities and participate in a supportive every-day context. This implies that improvements of child engagement should be emphasized in health promotion and to a greater extent be the central focus of health interventions for young children.

Fängslad i kulturens seder: - En kvalitativ studie om unga assyriska/syrianska kvinnors subjektiva upplevelser av en hederskultur2016Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Boys will be boys (and girls will be girls)?
    Abstract [sv]

En integrativ litteraturöversikt 2017Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

A political science perspective on socialization research: young Nordic citizens in a comparative light2009Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Political scientists characterize Scandinavian adults as politically active citizens in voting and party membership, and also in associational involvement. Scandinavians are said to be more politically motivated, have more political resources and have stronger participatory norms than others. Some scholars explain this in relation to a substantial amount of social capital. Others focus on the quality of political institutions, and strong civic education. Still others point at cultural factors, such as strong emancipative values resulting from socio-economic modernization.

Remarkably, political scientists have made few theoretical contributions to comparative political socialization research. This chapter aims at filling this gap. By drawing on theories that are able to account for adults, four hypotheses are elaborated that might account for cross-national differences in attitudes towards civic engagement among youth; the civic hypothesis, the social capital hypothesis, the public-institutional hypothesis, and the modernization hypothesis. The explanatory power of each hypothesis is tested by reviewing political socialization research as well as analyses of the IEA civic education data on 14-year-olds in 24 European and North American countries. Somewhat surprisingly, Southern European youth, not Scandinavians, are found to demonstrate the widest range of expected participatory modes. Self-predictions of active involvement seem to be explained mainly by political resources and motivation (the civic hypothesis), as well as by school experiences (the public-institutional hypothesis). However, research on the same cohort some years later indicates that experiences from a multitude of socialization arenas in late adolescence and early adulthood partly alter the cross-country pattern. Adult Scandinavians are in a world-leading position in political action.

Finally, in the light of recent Scandinavian “Democratic Audits’” claiming that mixed social, political and cultural conditions challenge Nordic stereotypes, the concept of the “Stand-by Citizen” is suggested to be useful in research on contemporary youth’s civic engagement, mainly due to its sensitivity towards not only manifest, but also latent dimensions of attitudes and behavior.

Improving evidence-based social work practice with youths exhibiting conduct problems through structured assessment2016In: European Journal of Social Work, ISSN 1369-1457, E-ISSN 1468-2664, Vol. 19, no 6, p. 887-900Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

A key task in evidence-based case management of youth is the assessment of research-based risk and protective factors. In the present study we compare assessments of social workers using a structured assessment instrument with assessments of social workers not using such an instrument. Assessments of the exact same case—a vignette about a 14-year-old boy—conducted by 30 social workers using a structured assessment instrument and 30 social workers not using such an instrument were compared. The 60 assessments were also rated by independent researchers and senior social services managers, blind to whether an instrument had been used in the assessments or not. As hypothesized, using a structured assessment instrument resulted in the identification of a greater number of research-based risk and protective factors, and the assessments were rated as better in terms of general adequacy, quality, accuracy and potential treatment effectiveness, than when an instrument was not used. The present study demonstrates that social workers’ assessments of youth become more evidence-based, adequate and potentially more treatment effective when a structured assessment instrument is used as compared to when it is not.

Risk and protective factors among preschool children: integrating research and practice2015In: Journal of Evidence-Informed Social Work, ISSN 2376-1407, E-ISSN 2376-1415, Vol. 12, no 4, p. 412-424Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this article the authors present a review of previous reviews and meta-analyses, identifying and summarizing the empirical research base on risk and protective factors for future psychosocial problems-specifically externalizing and internalizing problems-among preschool children. The authors also discuss risk and protective factors in the framework of concepts such as evidence-based practice, risk-focused prevention and treatment, and the Risk, Need, and Responsivity principles. They conclude that there is an extensive amount of research on risk and protective factors for preschool children that could and should be used by well educated professionals to help children to a better life.

    Abstract

The aim of this study has been to present the percieved influence of Facebook usage among

young adults. Five subjects, two men and three women aged 20-25, was the respondents of

qualitative, semistructured, interviews with an emphesis on social phenomenons that might

affect psychosocial health. After applying coding and thematc analasis to the collected data,

the findings were analyzed using socialpsychological theory and theory of identity and earlier

findings on the subject. The results show that the interviewed young adults tend to express

that Facebook usage is affecting their health in different ways, that Facebook as such has both

positive and negative sides and lastly that the individuals’ usage and represenatation on

Facebook can be linked to different roles and that the process of representation on Facebook

    can affect the identification process.

Uppföljning av Familjehemsplacerade Barn: - Socialsekreterarens arbete med enskilda samtal med barn och kontakten med vårdnadshavare2006Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Men for Gender Equality: promising projects for preventing men’s violence against women2016In: Preventie van intergenerationeel geweld in Nederland en EU: Verkenning van wat werkt. Abstract [en]

Män för jämställdhet (eng: Men for Gender Equality - MfGE) is a non-government Swedish organisation with a vision for “a gender equal society without violence”. Critical gender theory serves as the platform for the organisation and its projects. Two of MfGE’s projects: Jämt föräldraskap (eng: Equal Parenthood - EP) and Frihet från våld (eng: Freedom From Violence - FFV) are particularly good examples of how MfGE is working to prevent men’s violence against women. EP promotes equal parenting by developing and offering activities directed at new and expectant parents, with special focus on fathers. Half of their activities are directed at local parental and father groups across the country. FFV offers early violence prevention aimed at children and young people in order to limit the incidence and consequences of violence in young people’s intimate relationships by adopting methods that highlight the importance of bystanders. This programme is an adaptation of the American Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP). Although the programmes in their Swedish versions need further evaluation to establish their evidence base, their firm correspondence to what the literature identifies as important aspects for succeeding in preventing men’s violence qualifies them as promising projects.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to describe the participation of youth in a community change project that Nerikes international association, NIF, has carried through . NIF is an umbrella organisation for different immigrant associations in Närke. The purpose of their project was to engage youth and adults so they could work for change together with the focus on youths participation. Out of the purpose with my study I wanted to find out to which degree the youth had participated during the process and what difficulties and facilitating factors had occurred. I was also interested in what consequences the youths participation had had for them personally and for the local area.

As theoretical starting points in the study has different aspects of participation been discussed as well as social mobilisation, empowerment and the conscious making pedagogy how explains different strategies of how to make people participate and strengthen their action capacity. A qualitative method has been used and two youths has been interviewed, a male and a female. The project leader has also been interviewed.

The result showed that the youth has had the opportunity to participate during the whole process. From the making of the project plan to the conduction of the different activities. The youth has had the responsible to bring the work forward. The fact that the youth has worked together and with support from adults has shown to have positive effects because it has given the youth strength to express their opinions. At the same time it turns out that the adults hasn’t participated so much and that they could have had an more active role. Even the motivation among many of the youth was bigger in the beginning of the project. The youth that’s been interviewed has also gotten new knowledge and capacities and social training through their participation in the project.

Tinnitus and short-term serial recall in stable versus intermittent masking conditions2009In: Scandinavian Journal of Psychology, ISSN 0036-5564, E-ISSN 1467-9450, Vol. 50, no 5, p. 517-522Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The relation between tinnitus and short-term memory performance in varying background sounds is not well understood. In the present study a sample of 18 persons with tinnitus completed a serial recall test in three conditions, silence, masking and intermittent masking. The performance of a matched control group without tinnitus was also investigated. Based on the literature on the "irrelevant sound effect" we expected that the tinnitus group would perform worse during intermittent masking and that they would score lower overall compared to the control group. Results revealed no statistically significant differences between the groups, nor any group interaction within sound conditions for the serial recall test. Groups did however differ regarding subjective measures of concentration problems, anxiety and depression. Results are discussed in relation to thought suppression and distraction from tinnitus.
