    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This book looks at the consequences and implications of an emerging new way of local politics in Europe. With the term "governance", changes in the political and social constitution of cities are analysed. Based on theoretical and empirical studies by scholars from ten countries, different aspects of "urban governance" will be presented.

Overweight, obesity and the food service industry2005In: Food Service Technology, ISSN 1471-5732, E-ISSN 1471-5740, Vol. 5, no 2-4, p. 85-94Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In many countries people are eating out more often and the food service industry has encouraged/reacted to this with business activities such as ‘super-sizing’, product bundling and ‘all you can eat buffets’. At the same time, the incidence of overweight and obesity has increased throughout the world and the food service industry has been implicated if not blamed entirely for this situation. However, is the food service industry rightly condemned as the obesity villain? This article considers some of the factors in the obesity debate and concludes that it is not a ‘one-way street’ and both the food service industry and consumer alike bear responsibility for the current situation.

Announced refusal to answer: a study of norms and accountability in broadcast political interviews2009In: Discourse Studies, ISSN 1461-4456, E-ISSN 1461-7080, Vol. 11, no 6, p. 681-702Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article investigates the announced refusal to answer asa form of dispreferred and challenging response in broadcastpolitical interviews. The aim is to study how the rightnessand wrongness of conduct is dealt with in situations of announcedrefusal. More specifically, the paper focuses on: (1) announcedrefusal as a particular type of conduct; (2) the orientationto norms and accountability in situations of announced refusal;(3) how the legitimacy of politics and journalism is negotiatedin broadcast interviews. The data consist of 23 cases from Swedishelection campaigns, and the analysis is based on ConversationAnalysis, focusing on how the participants treat themselvesand others as normatively accountable. The study indicates thatthe politicians understand themselves as accountable and avoidhostile actions in the interviews. Their refusals are designedmainly to be understood as appropriate distancing actions withoutexplicitly complaining about the interviewers’ conduct.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to investigate Swedish students’ victim blaming and acceptance of rape myths in three separate rape situations, i.e. in a relationship, superficial acquaintance and completely unknown. The empirical data was collected through semi-structured interviews, using a vignette study. The results showed that students’ victim blaming varied depending on the relationship between victim and perpetrator and depending on the judgement of the rape situation. Victim blaming increased due to factors that were considered contributory to become a victim of rape. The conclusion is that there is a notion of who is exposed of rape crimes, due to a lack of knowledge that should be prevented to reduce the common rape myths in the society.

Molecular grouping of Listeria monocytogenes based on the sequence of the inlB gene2000In: Journal of Medical Microbiology, ISSN 0022-2615, E-ISSN 1473-5644, ISSN 0022-2615, Vol. 49, no 1, p. 73-80Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The major part of the gene inlB was sequenced in 24 strains of Listeria monocytogenes belonging to serovars 1/2a, 1/2b, 1/2c, 3b and 4b. A phylogenetic analysis based on the inlB nucleotide sequences showed that strains of serovars 1/2a and 1/2c were closely related, as well as those of serovars 1/2b and 3b. Strains sharing serovar 4b could be divided into two distinct groups. There were differences in amino-acid sequence between all serovars except between serovars 1/2b and 3b. Differences in amino-acid sequence were also seen within each of the serovars 1/2a and 4b. The data presented indicate that the inlB gene may be useful for typing purposes as an alternative or complement to serotyping.

Directed Patrol for Preventing City Centre Street Violence in Sweden - A Hot Spot Policing Intervention2013In: European Journal on Criminal Policy and Research, ISSN 0928-1371, E-ISSN 1572-9869, Vol. 19, no 4, p. 333-350Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study examines a hot spot policing intervention where private security guards patrolled a specific area in the city centre of a mid-sized Swedish town during summer weekend evenings and nights, aiming to reduce the number of reported street violence incidents. A follow-up of the intervention, using previous years as a control was conducted to measure changes in the number of street violence rates before and during the intervention. The results show non-significant decreases in the number of reported street violence incidents during the intervention. The results can be interpreted in at least two ways: that the intervention had no effects; or that the small, but non-significant decreases observed, are indeed small effects that can be strengthened by modifying the implementation of the intervention. An additional analysis shows that the changes in crime rates are larger at times when the guards adapted a stricter hot spot policing approach, which indicates that with a more structured implementation of the intervention it might be possible to see larger effects.

Connecting eGovernment to real government: the failure of the UN eParticipation index2011In: Electronic government / [ed] Marijn Janssen, Hans J. Scholl, Maria A. Wimmer, Yao-Hua Tan, Springer Berlin/Heidelberg, 2011, Vol. 6846/2011, p. 26-37Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

eGovernment rankings are increasingly important as they guide countries’ focus of their efforts. Hence indexes must not just measure features of web sites but also accurately indicate underlying government processes. eGovernment rankings are in a process of maturation in that direction, moving from purely measuring web sites to assessing use and government qualities. One such measurement is the UN eParticipation index, intended to measure how well governments connect to their citizens. This paper analyzes the quality of the index by validating it against other indexes of government-citizen relations qualities, democracy, internet filtering, and transparency. Results: The relation between the index and democracy and participation is non-existent. Countries which are authoritarian or obstruct citizen internet use by filtering can score high on eParticipation by window-dressing their webs. We suggest that the eParticipation index includes an element of reality check and propose ways to do that.

The effect of eGovernment on corruption: measuring robustness of indexes2011In: Electronic government and the information systems perspective / [ed] Kim Normann Andersen, Enrico Francesconi, Åke Grönlund, Tom M. van Engers, Berlin/Heidelberg: Springer Berlin/Heidelberg, 2011, Vol. 6866, p. 235-248Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

One eGovernment proposal is that increased transparency and formalization of processes will reduce corruption. Andersen [4]) and Shim & Eom [6] found such positive effects, but findings are not comparable as different indexes were used and index quality was not tested. To fill this gap this paper uses statistical methods to investigate if the positive effect of eGovernment is robust across different indexes. We find that while corruption is very consistently measured by the CCI and CPI indexes, eGovernment indexes vary widely as predictors. The Economist and ITU indexes are the best predictors. The UN index scores fairly good but none of the other tested indexes can serve as indicator. Findings indicate that including social and institutional analysis improves an index hugely while measuring web sites is pointless. This suggests that indexes would score similarly different also on other eGovernment effects, and that the choice of eGovernment index is very important.

Why one goes to school: what school means to young people entering foster care2011In: Child & Family Social Work, ISSN 1356-7500, E-ISSN 1365-2206, Vol. 16, no 1, p. 43-51Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this interpretative childhood study of 17 boys and girls 13 – 16 years old placed in foster families, the experiences and attitudes towards school are explored. The importance of school as an arena for both learning and socialization is emphasized. Data were collected through interviews, network maps, and text answers via mobile phone (‘beepers’). Their educational improvement was based on their understanding of scholastic achievement as meaningful for their future, stability in daily routines, and the involvement and support of family, peers, and teachers. Access to peers at school is important, and group activities facilitate this. Because of their background, foster youth can also be exposed to bullying from peers. Both learning and socialization at school affect their self-esteem.
