Vetenskap online: retorisk utmaning eller argumentationens död?2001In: Rhetorica Scandinavica, ISSN 1397-0534, no 19, p. 38-51Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

Risk communication from a rhetorical perspective2010In: Communicating risks: towards the threat society / [ed] Stig A. Nohrstedt, Göteborg: Nordicom , 2010, p. 53-71Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Risk and crisis scenarios always create different kinds of rhetorical situations, i.e. situations that call for discursive action. The aim of this chapter is to discuss how classical and modern rhetorical theories and methods can contribute to research on threat images and risk- and crisis communication. Rhetoric research focuses on the persuasive elements in discourses and sees “rhetoricity” as integrated in all kinds of communication. Rhetoric offers well structured methods for analyzing content, style, form and argumentation in communication, weather it is a question of text, picture, mediated communication or dialogue and conversation. In this chapter we exemplify the rhetorical approach by analyzing public hearings, concerning the question of nuclear waste management in Sweden. The hearings, conducted by the nuclear waste council, are studied with regard both to argumentation and attitudes. The analysis reveals a considerable gap between “technosphere” and “demosphere”, i.e. expert discourse and civic discourse, far from an open dialogue on this complex and crucial issue.

The Sweden Democrats came in from the cold: how the debate about allowing the SD into media arenas shifted between 2002 and 20102013In: Right-wing populism in Europe: politics and discourse / [ed] Ruth Wodak, Majid Khosravinik, Brigitte Mral, London: Bloomsbury Academic, 2013, 1, p. 277-292Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Since the establishment of the Sweden Democrats they have collected more and more votes for every election. They have managed to go from being a marginalised right wing extremist party to an established party in parliament in less than twenty years. Their entry into the parliament in 2010 is the result of a journey that started in 1995 and intensified during the 2000s. This chapter takes a rhetorical perspective and specifically analyses the public debate regarding the Sweden Democrats and if they should be allowed to buy advertisement space. The background of the party is explained and set in a both Swedish and broader context. It is also reviewed how the established parties publicly declared their strategies towards the Sweden Democrats and how the general media treatment and view of the party was during primarily the 2000s.

With a combined method of rhetorical pro et contra theory and modern argumentation theory, Toulmin and informal logic, the continuous debate between 2002 and 2010 is analysed. It goes through how individual arguments are constructed, how they relate to each other over time, how the standpoint of the editors in chief shifts over time and how the argumentation is structured in the public debate.

Bildens retorik i journalistiken2011Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]
