    Abstract [en]

In this article we present early findings of a review study about the use of ’discourse analysis’ in music education research. The review study is part of a research project on discourses of academisation and the music profession in higher music education (DAPHME). ‘Discourse analysis’ and comparable terms label a range of approaches sharing a view upon language as constructing reality as well as being socially constructed. They differ in their theoretical background and with regard to empirical methods. We developed possible categories of comparison and put them to the test by investigating four examples of discourse research in the context of the question: How can the different approaches help to explain the processes of academisation in higher music education.

On human-AI collaboration in artistic performance2020In: NeHuAI 2020: First International Workshop on New Foundations for Human-Centered AI: Proceedings of the First International Workshop on New Foundations for Human-Centered AI (NeHuAI) co-located with 24th European Conference on Artificial Intelligence (ECAI 2020) / [ed] Alessandro Saffiotti, Luciano Serafini, Paul Lukowicz, CEUR-WS , 2020, Vol. 2659, p. 38-43Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Live artistic performance, like music, dance or acting, provides an excellent domain to observe and analyze the mechanisms of human-human collaboration. In this note, we use this domain to study human-AI collaboration. We propose a model for collaborative artistic performance, in which an AI system mediates the interaction between a human and an artificial performer. We then instantiate this model in three case studies involving different combinations of human musicians, human dancers, robot dancers, and a virtual drummer. All case studies have been demonstrated in public live performances involving improvised artistic creation, with audiences of up to 250 people. We speculate that our model can be used to enable human-AI collaboration beyond the domain of artistic performance.

Tid är relativt: Att skriva med grafisk notation2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Tuning in on diversity: challenges of culturally diverse music education as viewed through the lens of an intercultural exchange trip2016In: Music in an intercultural perspective / [ed] Antenor Correa Ferreira, Brasilia: Strong Edições , 2016, 1, p. 75-84Chapter in book (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
    Abstract [en]

During autumn 2015, I had the pleasure of joining a two-week trip to Brazil as part of my second year master course. Having focused on issues of multiculturalism and music education in my first year master thesis, this "musical immersion course" provided excellent opportunities to gain perspectives on theory, findings and conclusions through direct intercultural experience. During our stay in Brazil, we were invited to observe, and sometimes also participate in, a great variety of music educational settings, an experience that offered myself many possibilities of both recognizing familiar patterns and noting differences between the music teaching realities of Brazil and Sweden. Such observations got me interested in further examining which challenges we share when it comes to creating an education of musical diversity and which challenges might be more tied to the specific contexts of each country.

Four chord fenomenet: En studie i att återanvända en ackordföljd2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Death Grips: Studie i Death Grips persona och autenticitet2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Thesis in Musicology and Artistic Practice by Anders Soldh. Part of the work for the master’s degree. Studies from School of Music, Theatre and Art, University of Örebro, 2007. Available from School of Music, Theatre and Art, Örebro University, SE-701 82 Örebro, Sweden. Original in Swedish.

This essay in musicology describes the work concerning the composition of an orchestral piece and the different strategies and approaches which are essential in order to be in control of your work and to make a piece of music sound the way you want it to. It consists of two different parts:

    1) The theory part: This first part describes the importance of planning. This planning consists of how to determinate duration, number of themes, form and orchestration in a piece of music. It also brings up the importance of time management.Further, it deals with problems you might find in the collaboration with a soloist and orchestra. In the orchestral section of this part of the essay, the different instruments and their families are brought up. Finally, the theory section talks about the role and importance of the audience.

    2) The practical part: This second part (from chapter 7), which includes the score of the piece ”Medvind”, consists of a complete analysis of the music. This analysis shows how the subjects spoken of the theory part are dealt with in practice when writing a piece of music. Included in this part is also a recording of the piece played by ”Svenska Kammarorkestern” with Mats Norrefalk as soloist.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of our study is to find out how teachers can help their students to learn how to managestage fright. By interviewing high school teachers and high school students and also observe one oftheir classes, we wanted to find out how they think about the causes of stage fright and what youcan do to relieve it. We also wanted to find out how teachers are working to teach students how todeal with stage fright, and how they think that you also could work. As a teacher of music, among other things, the task is to assess and rate the students performancesin music. Several components are based on the students' courage to play on his or her instrument infront of other people. Those who suffer from stage fright find this in many cases hard, which bothinhibit the student's development and hampers the assessment for the teacher. It is assumed, however, implicit in the curriculum of music that stage fright does not exist or that students have thetools to manage it. We want our work to provide an input into how teachers in high school can work with stage frightwith their students and we believe that teachers in other subjects also can use this. There is some research on how to deal with stage fright as a musician, but a lot comes from thesport which for a long time has studied how to perform best under pressure. The results of our studyshow that stage fright can be caused by several things, and that there are also several ways to learn how to manage it. For example, to be well prepared and gain greater self-awareness. Much is basedon strengthening self-esteem and make sure the teacher sees each student's needs. But theinterviewed teachers also feel that they lack skills and education in the area, and they base their thoughts only on their own empirical data.

”Annars blir de ju robotar, det går ju inte!”: – om gymnasieelevers möjlighet till reflektion över sitt eget skapande i Bild2006Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Duets with nature: How natural acoustics affect the experience of performing Nordic herding music in outdoor settings2021In: AAWM Music and Nature, Vol. 1, p. 11-67Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

By employing an approach inspired by affect and theories on natural acoustics, this article explores how and what affects sound propagation outdoors and what role echoes and reverberation has in affective experiences of performing Nordic herding music outdoors. To study this, we traveled to eight summer farms (fäbodar) in Sweden together with seven herding musicians. We measured and described essential data of landscape, soundscape and airscape and instructed the musicians to try their vocal and instrumental sounds in different frequencies and timbres. We also asked them to evaluate their sounds and describe how they experienced the natural acoustics and how these experiences affected how they felt when they sang and played their horns. Putting together their answers with the data drawn from our measurements, the study shows that responses in nature is crucial for a positive experience of calling and playing horns. The results also tells us that when the aim of producing a sound is to reach far, and the musicians experience that they do just that, they experience emotions of joy, empowerment, satisfaction and being “one with nature” in a duet between the musician and the echoes of the forested mountains.
