Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to explore and discuss the relationship between violence and masculinity in popular culture by analyzing the Netflix series Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. The following research questions are answered: What emotions emerge when acts of violence are motivated or justified? What emotions appear as consequences of the violent actions carried out? How do these emotions contribute to sustaining or challenging masculinity norms associated with violence? Theoretically, the analysis draws upon, firstly, gender theories regarding violence and masculinity and, secondly, sociology of emotions. All nine episodes of the series are analyzed by using thematic analysis. The results show that masculinity and violence are closely intertwined in the depiction of the Menendez family as an emotional regime. The representations of violence also provide insights into how emotions play a role in both upholding and challenging norms of masculinity. Examining this specific series has also highlighted that emotions such as fear, shame and anger are central for understanding violence, as these emotions both motivate and follow from violent acts.
