The introductory chapter to the edited volume Arguing with Multiple Semiotic Modes traces the multimodal expansion of the field of argumentation studies from initial skepticism to growing recognition. The authors advocate for integrating multimodal insights into argumentation theory (and vice versa), while addressing the challenges that this synergy raises. They also call for closer dialogue between argumentation studies and rhetoric studies of visual and multimodal communication, acknowledging the vital role of context and genre. After an overview of the contents of the various chapters structured in three parts, the authors conclude by mapping out future directions for research in multimodal argumentation.
