As a child of two parents who have experienced upwards social mobility I am interested in social class and how it affects people’s lives. This study is based on qualitative interviews with four people born in the first half of the 20th century, all of them have experienced upwards social mobility. The aim is to investigate these people’s view of social class and of them selvs in a class context. I also want to study how gender can affect an individual’s possibility of social mobility. Previous research shows that people who become socially mobile often have felt different and lonely during their childhood and also that literature plays an important role in finding ones own way. My study confirms this. I have also found out that social class still is a reality in the society but we tend to use another vocabulary when talking about it today.
