War and conflicts around the world in the 2010s have forced millions of people to leave their homes and seek shelter in many European countries. In 2015, the number of asylum seekers in Sweden was high and the asylum issue has been attended to and discussed in the Swedish social debate over recent years. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the discourse surrounding asylum seekers and how they are described in one of society”s largest sources of information and  opinion  formation,  namely  the  media.  The  empirical  material  of  the  essay  consists  of articles from the Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter. Discourse analysis is the methodological and theoretical basis of the essay, but we also apply Elias och Scotson”s theory of established and outsiders. The essay reveals discourses around asylum seekers in three key themes, which are cost and liability, vulnerability and protection, as well as mistrust. We found that the choice of article heading and who was allowed to express their position or opinion, had an impact on how the discourse was designed. When we analyzed further, we also saw that the words used in the description of asylum seekers had an impact on which characteristics that were linked to the them and how their identity was produced.

Krig och konflikter runt om i världen under 2010-talet har tvingat miljoner människor att lämna sina hem och söka skydd i många av Europas länder. År 2015 sökte rekordmånga asyl i Sverige och asylfrågan har under de senaste åren varit uppmärksammat och omdiskuterat i den svenska samhällsdebatten. Syftet med uppsatsen är att undersöka diskursen kring asylsökande och hur de beskrivs i en av samhällets största källa till information och åsiktsbildning, nämligen media. Uppsatsens empiriska material består därför av artiklar från den svenska dagstidningen Dagens Nyheter.  Diskursanalys  är  uppsatsens  metodologiska  och  teoretiska  utgångspunkt  men  vi tillämpar  även  Elias  och  Scotsons  teori  om  etablerade  och  outsiders.  Uppsatsen  synliggör diskurser kring asylsökande inom tre centrala teman vilka är kostnad och belastning, utsatthet och skydd, samt misstro. Vi fann att val av artikelrubrik och vem som tillåts uttala sig, hade betydelse för hur diskursen var utformad. När vi analyserade på djupet såg vi även att de ord som  används  i  beskrivningen  av  asylsökande  hade  en  inverkan  på  hur  deras  identitet framställdes samt vilka egenskaper de asylsökande tillskrevs.
