Byggbranschen har inte utvecklats som liknande ingenjörsområden.  (Teicholz P, 2004) Med introduceringen av VDC (Virtual Design & Construction) på Stanford University kan detta förändras. Syftet av examensarbetet är att redogöra och undersöka hur införandet av VDC enligt de intervjuade aktörer har förändrat och påverkat den svenska byggbranschen jämfört med det traditionella sättet att arbeta.

Metodiken som används för att uppnå målen utgörs utav forskningsmetoderna litteraturstudier och semistrukturerade intervjuer. Litteraturanalysen för att kunna ge författarna kunskap om VDC och sedan semistrukturerade intervjuerna för att få aktörernas bild utav VDC.

Arbetet är avgränsat till företag som är verksamma i Sverige och tillämpar VDC i sitt projekt. VDC har fungerat bättre i de större företagen som har certifierade och kunniga personer inom VDC. Dessa företag har implementerat arbetssättet till fullo med verktygen BIM,Collaboration, Process och Metrics. Medans de mindre företagen som inte har kunniga personer om arbetssättet har fortfarande inte sett de konkreta nyttorna. Arbetet har blivit roligare än det traditionella sättet eftersom kommunikationen har förenklats och olika aktörer blir enklare involverade. Det har även lett till att ökad förståelse för vad kunden efterfrågar. Fördelarna med VDC är att det är mer involvering av de olika aktörer och kund, snabbare beslutsprocesser och nytt sätt att tänka och utföra projekt på. Nackdelarna med VDC att det är relativt nytt samt att det kräver tid tills man kan se konkreta nyttorna med arbetssättet. För att utvecklingen av arbetssättet ska fortgå behöver företagen utbilda sin personal inom området, samt skapa dialog och samarbeten mellan de olika företagen. VDC har möjlighet att bli standard arbetssättet som används inom byggbranschen i Sverige.

The construction industry has not evolved like other engineering fields.  (Teicholz P, 2004) But with the introduction of VDC (Virtual Design & Construction) in Stanford University, it can change soon. The purpose of this master thesis is to clarify and describe how VDC has changed the swedish construction trade since the implementation of VDC according to actors/stakeholders in comparison to the traditional way of working. The methodology used to achieve the goals consists of the research methods literature analysis and semistructured interviews. The literature analysis firstly so the authors can acquire knowledge about VDC and and then semistructured interviews to obtain the actors/stakeholders view of VDC.

The master thesis is defined within companies that are active in Sweden and apply VDC in their work.

Arbetet har blivit roligare än det traditionella sättet eftersom kommunikationen har förenklats och olika aktörer blir enklare involverade. Det har även lett till att ökad förståelse för vad kunden efterfrågar.

VDC has had a better impact on the larger companies that has certified and knowledgeable staff within VDC. These companies has implemented the work procedure to the full with tools BIM,Collaboration, Process och Metrics. While the smaller companies that does not have knowledgeable staff within the work procedure has still not seen tangible benefit. The work has become more amusing compared to the traditional way of working because of the communication has been simplified and the different actors becomes more easily involved. It has also led to an increased understanding of what the customer wants. The advantages with VDC is more involvement of different actors and client, faster decision-making process and a new way to think and execute projects. The disadvantages with VDC is that it is relatively new and it will take some time to see the tangible benefit.

To make this work form evolve, the companies need to educate their employees within the subject and to create a dialog and cooperation between the companies. VDC has the opportunity to become the standard work form within the construction trade in Sweden.
