COMPARISON OF ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT BETWEEN CONCRETE AND CLT (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Today, almost all high-rise buildings are built with concrete. Concrete has many good properties used for foundations. However, the producing concrete releases huge amounts of greenhouse gases. Cross-laminated timber is a material that has similar properties to concrete but is a much more environmentally friendly material. In this study, a building with concrete structures from Peab is examined. The purpose of this study is to replace the concrete frames with cross-laminated timber to see how much difference there is between these materials when it comes to environmental impact. The concrete frames are confined to exterior walls and intermediate joists. In order to carry out this survey, suppliers of the building were contacted regarding the environmental impact of the materials to obtain EPD values. Furthermore, carbon dioxide equivalents were calculated, which are delimited to get an idea of the environmental impact of concrete and cross-laminated timber respectively. The result shows that the timber frames does not contribute negative to the greenhouse effect, but that it contributes positively to the sustainability of the environment compared to concrete because the wood binds carbon dioxide. According to Martinsons, cross-laminated timber has a negative EPD value in the production stage, which means that their timber never contributes to the greenhouse effect during the production stage. Three different cases were studied. The first case is a concrete frame, the second case is a timber frame where the EPD takes into account that the wood binds carbon dioxide during its lifetime and the third case is the timber frame where the EPD does not take into account that wood binds carbon dioxide during its lifetime. The results show that case one and three contribute to the greenhouse effect in the production phase, however, the concrete frame contributes 5.5 times more than the timbers frame. The results for case two show that wood does not contribute to the greenhouse effect in the production stage, but it helps by binding carbon dioxide. The conclusion is that timber frames are judged to be better for the environment than the concrete frame. However, it is difficult to get a correct answer because the EPDs for timber are questioned as they have included in their calculations that the tree binds to carbon dioxide before the tree is cut down. Since the study is limited only to the production stage (A1-A3), it has also made it difficult to get a clear result
