Abstract [en]

Potential sampling bias in experimental pain research is a relatively new and unexplored field of study. Volunteering to participate in an experiment that involves pain seems counterintuitive. In order to investigate potential sampling bias in this field several characteristics of potential participants along with their perceived likelihood of participating in experimental pain research were explored. More specifically, the objective of the present study was to explore if sensation-seeking, fear of pain, age, extraversion, negative affect, and past and current pain experiences are associated with the perceived likelihood of participation in experimental pain research amongst Swedish University students. A cross-sectional study in the form of a survey was conducted to assess participants’ (N = 94, age = 18–39) perceived likelihood of participating in experimental pain research. In addition, the survey comprised scales measuring each of the hypothesized predictor variables respectively. In contrast to findings in previous research, the results in the present study did not reveal any significant predictors except for gender. This demonstrates the importance of further studies on students’ perceived likelihood of participating in different types of studies and research projects in general, and in pain experiments in particular.

Potentiell urvalsskevhet inom experimentell smärtforskning är ett relativt nytt och outforskat forskningsområde. Att frivilligt delta i experiment som involverar smärta kan verka kontraintuitivt. Syftet med den här studien var att undersöka om sensationssökande, smärträdsla, ålder, extraversion, negativ affekt, och nuvarande och tidigare erfarenheter av smärta är associerade med upplevd sannolikhet att delta i experimentell smärtforskning bland svenska universitetsstudenter. En tvärsnittsstudie i form av en enkätundersökning genomfördes för att bedöma deltagarnas (N = 94, ålder = 18–39) upplevda sannolikhet att delta i experimentell smärtforskning. I motsats till tidigare forskning visade våra resultat inte på några signifikanta prediktorer förutom kön. Framtida undersökningar av studenters upplevda sannolikhet att delta i olika typer av studier och forskningsprojekt i allmänhet, och i smärtexperiment i synnerhet, skulle kunna hjälpa oss att bättre förstå och avgöra hur representativa dessa resultat är.
