Among the literary works produced by Jewish Polish immigrants in France during the Second World War, the works of Robert Bober stand out in terms of style, rhetoric of understatement and their treatment of memory without fixing it too tightly to the historical event. This study, which includes unpublished statements from the writer, examines the complex play by which history and fantasy merge in a literary work. By integrating the event with a personal theme, Robert Bober brings out the horror of Nazism without polemic or pity. Bober’s aim is neither revenge nor provocation - even if his words are violent by association. The modus is not imperative, it is affirmative, performing only pragmatically. The narrator notes, reproduces without copying and develops memory. Therefore, the reader never feels confronted with an ideological discourse, he has no reason to think that the story is "rigged", as is the case in some tendency novels. Also, Bober’s novels respect the principle of intransitivity of suffering, because even if the text is a kind of object, the pain is never explained. The fragmentary nature of the narrative can be explained by resistance to putting things into a definite order, as though the subject of the Holocaust deserved to stay unfinished.

Parmi les œuvres littéraires produites par les écrivains d’origine juive polonaise immigrés en France pendant la seconde guerre mondiale, les romans de Robert Bober se distinguent par leur style plat et par leur manière d’éviter les liens trop explicites à l’événement historique. La présente étude, qui comprend des affirmations inédites de l’écrivain, examine le jeu complexe par lequel Histoire et imaginaire se mêlent dans l’œuvre littéraire. En intégrant l’événement dans une thématique person-nelle, Robert Bober fait surgir l’horreur du nazisme sans culpabilisation, ni pitié. Même si le projet de Bober est violent par association, il ne cherche pas à provoquer. La performativité du texte ne se montre que dans un contexte historique. En fonctionnant sur le niveau du constat, le texte développe le souvenir. Par conséquent, le lecteur n’a jamais l’impression de se retrouver devant un discours idéologique, il n’a aucune raison de juger « truquée » l’histoire, comme c’est le cas dans certains romans à thèse. Aussi, le roman de Bober respecte le principe d’intransitivité de la souffrance, car même si le texte est une sorte de mise en objet, la douleur n’est jamais expliquée. Le caractère fragmentaire de la narration s’explique donc par la résistance à la mise en ordre définitive, comme si la matière de la Shoah méritait de rester matière brute.
