Objectives: Despite advancements in vehicle safety aimed at protecting occupants and non-motorists, the substantial healthcare costs related to crash injuries (USD 75 billion in the USA in 2017) underscore the importance of exploring other contributing factors for enhanced prevention strategies. This study examines driver height as a proxy for human characteristics that may influence the likelihood of involvement in fatal crashes.
Methods: Utilizing data from the 2000-2019 Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) in the USA, we investigated the impact of driver height and gender on traffic safety outcomes. By sourcing driver height information from driver's licenses, we explored the concept of "relative stature" in relation to the gender-specific height distribution in the population. Our study includes analyses of both single- and multi-vehicle crashes, employing maximum likelihood estimation to examine the relationship between driver height and the probability of involvement in fatal crashes.
Results: The analysis reveals that taller drivers are more likely to be involved in fatal traffic crashes. This correlation remains significant even when controlling for other recognized risk factors, indicating that driver height, as an inherent human characteristic, is a critical factor in crash events. These findings highlight the importance of accounting for physical attributes of drivers in traffic safety strategies.
Discussion: Given the significant healthcare expenditure associated with motor vehicle crashes, our study emphasizes the urgent need for comprehensive prevention strategies that extend beyond vehicle safety features. Identifying a link between driver height and crash involvement opens new possibilities for research and preventative measures. Integrating knowledge about physical driver characteristics with behavioral factors can inform more effective safety interventions, vehicle designs, and educational programs, potentially reducing crash rates and reducing associated healthcare and economic burden.
