Engaging Immigrant Youth: Redefining Integration Strategies for a Resilient Future
2024 (English)Conference paper, Oral presentation only (Refereed)
Abstract [en]
Migration is reshaping societies across the globe, presenting both opportunities and challenges. In this dynamic landscape, the integration of immigrant youth has emerged as a critical issue, particularly in countries like Sweden, where 27% of the population has a foreign background. Despite its progressive policies, Sweden faces persistent issues such as educational disparities, neighborhood segregation, and ethnic victimization among immigrant adolescents. Nordic exceptionalism often masks these challenges, obscuring subtle discrimination and societal polarization. This presentation advocates for a transformative approach to integration that places immigrant youth at the forefront of policy and practice. Drawing from extensive research based on a literature review and personal observations, it highlights the resilience and potential of these young individuals, challenging the dominant narratives that focus solely on their vulnerabilities and trauma. Instead, it emphasizes the importance of involving immigrant youth in creating integration strategies, ensuring their voices and experiences shape the solutions to support them. The involvement of immigrant youth in decision-making processes is beneficial and essential. It fosters a sense of belonging and empowerment, which is crucial for their well-being and integration. By recognizing and harnessing their strengths, we can develop more effective and inclusive support systems that address their unique needs and aspirations. This approach benefits the youth and enriches society, promoting social cohesion and mutual understanding. As policymakers, educators, and community leaders, we must reimagine our integration strategies to be more inclusive and youth-centric. This presentation serves as a call to action, urging stakeholders to prioritize the perspectives and participation of immigrant youth in shaping a resilient and inclusive future.
