Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to highlight and examine how young adults with multiethnic backgrounds in Sweden experience life between two different cultures; their heritage and host cultures. By conducting qualitative semi-structured interviews on six young women (between the ages of 20 and 29), the study aimed to explore how this target group perceived belonging and navigating, how their experiences influenced their formation of an ethnic identity, and which copingstrategies they eventually used. The findings of this study revealed that young adults experiencing being in between cultures in Sweden feel that they cannot fully belong to either their heritage culture or the Swedish host culture. This has impacted their ethnic identity formation differently. A common theme is their struggle for acceptance and recognition of their multiethnic identity, which has affected their ability to form a stable ethnic identity. To cope with this, the group primarily used code-switching to navigate between cultures and enhance their social belonging. This research addresses a gap in existing literature which was found to often lack diverse representation and in-depth qualitative insights. The study can therefore contribute to the field of social work by providing a deeper understanding of identity-related complexities of multiethnic young adults in Sweden.
