Abstract [en]

How does the Sweden Democrats' use of populist rhetoric manifest, and how has it evolved over time? The party is characterized as a radical right-wing populist party that has sought to downplay its legacy of extreme nationalism. Nevertheless, it is assumed to employ populist rhetoric (Jungar 2017), prompting an interest in examining how these dynamics manifest during the election years 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022, as well as comparing them to identify potential developments over time. To conduct this study, party leader debates from the selected election years were analyzed. A qualitative content analysis was applied, utilizing a coding protocol. The study's findings indicate that the party uses populist rhetoric in various forms, including anti-elitism, unfounded policies, anti-establishment, anti-pluralism, and polarization. Another key finding is that the party's use of populist rhetoric does not follow a clear linear trajectory but varies depending on the strategic priorities shaping each election year.
