Abstract [en]
Epiroc strives to act as a sustainable actor in the mining industry. The company’s machines operate in demanding environments, resulting in a continuous need for filter replacement. To facilitate this, Epiroc offers so-called PM-kits (Preventative Maintenance Kits), where filters and other spare parts are packed together. This thesis project aims to analyze and map up Epiroc’s current production and distribution processes for PM-kits, and to design two to four alternatives that are more sustainable from environmental, economic, and social perspectives. The focus is on the APAC region (Asia and Pacific), where the existing processes are not fully aligned with Epiroc’s regionalization strategy. The thesis project was conducted using a methodology inspired by Design Research Methodology, and is based on observations, interviews, literature review, and document studies. An assessment tool to evaluate the sustainability of the designed alternatives was developed, in which CO2e emissions were used as an indicator of environmental impact and Epiroc’s internal cost analysis tool for TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) was applied for economic evaluations.Epiroc’s supplier audits were considered to reflect social sustainability but could not be conducted within the scope of this thesis.Four alternatives were designed, where the first one involved shifting from air to sea freight, the second one relocating the production from Europe to Epiroc’s GDC (Global Distribution Center) in Singapore, the third one outsourcing the packing of PM-kits to India, and the fourth one outsourcing the packing to China. All alternatives showed both improved environmentalsustainability and positive percentual change regarding economic sustainability. The thesisproject concludes with recommendations for further work, including improving the forecast system, conducting additional economic analyses, and evaluating potential external suppliers. Lastly, the option of implementing dual sourcing is proposed to investigate, as it aligns with Epiroc’s regionalization strategy.
